Algo que me asombra y alegra de Amigas y Amigos Artistas es poder conocer un poco más de cerca a personas que me maravillan con sus talentos y Paula Pons @paula_pons no fue la excepción 🙂

Lo particular de su trabajo no es sólo el uso de materiales reciclables tales como papeles de diario, sino además el tamaño de las esculturas que realiza.

Something that makes me happy about Artistic Friends is being able to get to know a little closer to people who amaze me with their talents and Paula Pons @paula_pons was no exception 🙂

The particularity of her work is not only the use of recyclable materials such as newspaper, but also the size of these sculptures that she builts.

Una tarde muy calurosa de enero, fui a conocerla en su estudio, una casa  en una esquina cuyo color violeta no pasa inadvertido en el barrio de Flores. Además a través de las ventanas pude ver algunas de sus obras, como una Frida de 1,80 m que al tomarle unas fotos me hizo sentir intimidada por su mirada… esas figuras parecen tener vida 🙂

One very hot January afternoon, I went to meet her in her studio, a house on a corner whose violet color does not go unnoticed in the Flores neighborhood. Also, through the windows I could see some of her works, like a Frida of 1.80 m that made me feel intimidated by her gaze… those figures seem to have life 🙂

Durante nuestra charla mantuvimos distancia porque ella estaba yendo a una muestra en México y lamentablemente el Omicron se encontraba en su esplendor 😦 . De cualquier manera la conversación fue muy cercana y agradable porque Paula es todo calidez y a la vez fuerza, charlando con ella me costó pensarla subida a andamios y soldando enormes estructuras y sin embargo es lo que ella hace. Te dejo ahora con sus palabras.

During our chat we kept our distance because she was going to a show in Mexico and unfortunately the Omicron was in its splendor 😦 . Anyway the conversation was very close and pleasant because Paula is all warmth and at the same time strength, chatting with her it was hard to think of her climbing scaffolding and welding huge structures and yet that’s what she does. I leave you now with her words.

Siempre sentí pasión por el arte y desde mi familia lo alentaron. De muy chiquita hice baile clásico/español, pero rápidamente me encaminé a las artes plásticas. Una de mis abuelas fue una gran modista y siempre había en su taller restos de telas, piedras, botones, puntillas, moldes, distintos elementos que agarraba para hacer cosas.

Ya en séptimo grado comencé mis estudios de Bellas Artes en Rogelio Yrurtia, hermosa escuela en dónde aprendes de todo, dibujo, grabado, pintura, composición, en especial me interesó mucho una materia llamada “morfología”, que me cambió el modo de ver algunas cosas. Luego Continué mis estudios, dividida entre la UBA en dónde me recibí de Abogada y la Prilidiano Pueyrredón en donde finalicé la Licenciatura en Artes Visuales.

I always had a passion for art and my family encouraged it. When I was very young I did classical/Spanish dance, but I quickly moved towards the plastic arts. One of my grandmothers was a great dressmaker and in her workshop there were always leftover fabrics, stones, buttons, lace, molds, different elements that she would take to make things.

Already in seventh grade I began my studies of Fine Arts at Rogelio Yrurtia, a beautiful school where you learn everything, drawing, engraving, painting, composition, especially I was very interested in a subject called «morphology», which changed my way of seeing some things. Then I continued my studies, divided between the UBA where I graduated as a lawyer and the Prilidiano Pueyrredón where I finished my degree in Visual Arts.

Vengo de la pintura, amo esa disciplina, comencé a realizar mis obras con papel de diario “por accidente” a partir de tener muchas ganas de hacer algo, con lo que encontrara. Esa fue la motivación. Si me preguntaran por que el diario, realmente no lo sé, no tuvo una premeditación, solo junté revistas de supermercados, quizás porque era gratis … y tenía cinta de embalar. Pero esto lo pienso después, estaba en México en el 2012, lejos de mis pinturas y pinceles, y los cambié  por el papel y los colores que encontraba en sus publicidades.

I come from painting, I love that discipline, I started to make my works with newspaper «by accident» because I wanted to do something with whatever I could find. That was the motivation. If you ask me why the newspaper, I really don’t know, I didn’t have any premeditation, I just gathered magazines from supermarkets, maybe because it was free … and I had packing tape. But I think about it later, I was in Mexico in 2012, far from my paints and brushes, and I changed them for the paper and the colors I found in their advertisements.

Por eso fue muy lindo volver este año a México, cumpliéndose los 10 años de aquel primer “Chavito” en papel que realicé y que me sigue acompañando en mi taller. En febrero participé de BADA México, con la obra “Mona Lisa y Frida tomando unas chelas en la feria”, fue un gran desafío que me hizo feliz poder lograrlo.

That’s why it was very nice to return to Mexico this year, being 10 years since that first «Chavito» on paper that I made and that still accompanies me in my workshop. In February I participated in BADA Mexico, with the work «Mona Lisa and Frida having a few drinks at the fair», it was a great challenge that made me happy to be able to achieve it.

Y se vienen nuevas obras, continuando con la serie de “Clásicos en Cartón”, estoy preparando a Medusa y La Pensadora para agosto de este año que llevo a Bada Argentina en La Rural junto otros de mis trabajos.

And new works are coming, continuing with the series of «Classics in Cardboard», I am preparing Medusa and La Pensadora for August this year that I am taking to Bada Argentina in La Rural along with other of my works.

En este momento estoy trabajando en una Jirafa de 4 metros de alto, para una pizzeria de Quilmes que se llama justamente «La Jirafa». Será emplazada en el patio de la misma, su terminación la realizaré con resina y quedará en color rojo.

At the moment I am working on a 4 meters high Giraffe, for a pizza place in Quilmes called «La Jirafa». It will be placed in the patio. I will finish it with resin and it will be in red color.

Un profesor de Historia del Arte una vez nos dijo, “el arte es la materialización de la historia” y quizás mis obras sean un poco eso. Estamos en momentos de mucho descarte y contaminación, en dónde  todo es fugaz, un mundo que corre todo el tiempo y todo lo desecha.

A professor of Art History once told us, «art is the materialization of history» and perhaps my works are a bit like that. We are in times of much discarding and pollution, where everything is fleeting, a world that runs all the time and discards everything.

Por otro lado, estoy muy feliz con mi segunda muestra individual, esta vez en la galería del Museo Casa Carnacini, en San Martín, Provincia de Buenos Aires. Voy a presentar 12 obras de distintas series, entre las que se encuentran «Mona Lisa y Frida», «Margarita», las Geishas y «No Todo lo que Brilla es Oro». Inaugura el 23 de abril del 2022.

On the other hand, I am very happy with my second solo show, this time at the gallery of the Casa Carnacini Museum, in San Martin, Buenos Aires. I will present 12 works from different series, among which are «Mona Lisa and Frida», «Margarita», the Geishas and «Not Everything that Glitters is Gold». Opening April 23rd, 2022.
