Hoy nuevamente quiero contarte algunas cosas más que me llamaron la atención durante el viaje que hicimos entre junio y julio por el norte de Europa.

Uno de los primeros destinos que visitamos fue Lerwick la capital de las Islas Shetland en Escocia. Quizás el nombre Shetland te resulte familiar porque es el de un tipo de ovejas que producen lana con la que se tejen sweaters como los que lucen tan elegantemente los ponies de la primera foto 😉

Estas lanas además de ser muy abrigadas son algo ásperas (yo no puedo tolerarlas en la piel porque me pican) así que espero que esos ponies no tengan el mismo problema que yo 🙂

Como verás en la fotos, además de para tejer sweaters utilizan la lana de manera original y creativa como en la decoración de las libretas (amor a primera vista para mi) o la simulación de cosas dulces en esta vidriera de uno de los negocios venta de lana.

Today I want to tell you some more things that caught my attention during the trip we made between June and July in Northern Europe.

One of the first destinations we visited was Lerwick, the capital of the Shetland Islands in Scotland. Perhaps the name Shetland is familiar to you because it is the name of a type of sheep that produce wool with which they knit sweaters like the ones the ponies in the first picture are wearing so elegantly 😉

These wools besides being very warm are a bit rough (I can’t bear them on my skin because they itch) so I hope those ponies don’t have the same problem as me 🙂

As you will see in the photos, besides knitting sweaters, they use wool in original and creative ways such as in the decoration of the notebooks (it was love at first sight for me) or the reproduction of candy in this window of one of the stores selling wool.

Paseando por diferentes ciudades en Noruega y Dinamarca encontré en diferentes tiendas muñecos, tazas, tarjetas, libretas, entre otros productos con un hipopótamo blanco, a veces acompañado de otros personajes. Pero fue cuando entré en una librería en Mariehamn, Finlandia donde al ver nuevamente al Moomin (así es como se llama) me animé a preguntarle al vendedor quienes eran estos personajes. Me contó sobre su autora Tove Jansson; casualmente finlandesa; y que sus libros se volvieron muy populares en los países escandinavos especialmente entre el público infantil. https://tovejansson.com/

Al regresar a casa, una serie de sincronías (como Julia Cameron llama a situaciones que parecen coincidencias pero que no lo son) ocurrieron. La primera fue que en uno de los artículos de la revista Conde Nast , la Embajadora H.E. Kirsti Kauppi recomendaba: The book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My de Tove Jansson. Ella dice que fue un libro escrito en principio para niños pero que por su naturaleza filosófica puede ser disfrutado a cualquier edad. Y luego, para continuar en sintonía, Lola Troncoso en su newsletter Mapamundi literario eligió para el mes de septiembre a Finlandia para recorrer con su literatura y a Tove Jansson con su obra : El libro del verano. Digamos que pasé de no conocer absolutamente nada sobre la escritora Tove Jansson y sus libros a encontrarla en todos lados 🙂 . Y debo confesar que estoy feliz de haberla descubierto.

Walking through different cities in Norway and Denmark I found in different stores dolls, mugs, cards, notebooks, among other products with a white hippopotamus, sometimes accompanied by other characters. But it was when I entered a bookstore in Mariehamn, Finland where I saw again the Moomin (that’s how it’s called) I decided to ask the seller who these characters were. He told me about their author Tove Jansson; coincidentally Finnish; and that her books became very popular in Scandinavian countries, especially among children.

Returning home, a series of synchronicities (as Julia Cameron calls situations that seem coincidental but are not) occurred. The first was that in one of the articles in Conde Nast magazine, Ambassador H.E. Kirsti Kauppi recommended: The book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My by Tove Jansson. She says it was a book originally written for children but because of its philosophical nature it can be enjoyed at any age. And then, to continue in tune, Lola Troncoso in her newsletter Mapamundi literario (Literary World Map) choosing Finland for the month of September to travel through its literature and Tove Jansson with her work: The Summer Book.

Let’s just say I went from knowing absolutely nothing about the writer Tove Jansson and her books to finding her everywhere 🙂 . And I must confess that I am very happy to have discovered her.

A los 12 o 13 años (alrededor de 1978 o 1979) el grupo ABBA se hizo muy popular en Argentina. Estuve pensando si el tema con los que los conocí fue Waterloo el ganador del concurso Eurovision en 1974 y que los catapultó a la fama mundialmente; aunque por el año quizás fue mi canción favorita Dancing Queen la primera que escuché. Acá te dejo el video por si tenes ganas de bailar o cantar desafinando como hago yo cada vez que la escucho, en especial cuando voy manejando 🙂

When I was 12 or 13 years old (around 1978 or 1979) the group ABBA became very popular in Argentina. I was thinking if the song with which I knew them was Waterloo, the winner of the Eurovision contest in 1974 and that catapulted them to worldwide fame; although because of the year it was perhaps my favorite song Dancing Queen the first one I heard. Cuando hace unos años vi la película Mamma Mia sentí que aquel amor de la adolescencia por el grupo sueco regresó, aunque creo que en realidad nunca se había ido 😉

Así que cuando fui a Estocolmo y supe de la existencia de un museo dedicado a ABBA obviamente quise ir a visitarlo. Algo que me sorprendió y también alegró fue ver que personas de todas las edades y nacionalidades aman sus canciones. When I watched the movie Mamma Mia a few years ago I felt that my teenage love for the Swedish band came back, although I don’t think it had ever really left 😉

So when I went to Stockholm and found out about the existence of a museum dedicated to ABBA I obviously wanted to visit it. Something that surprised me and also made me happy was to see that people of all ages and nationalities love their songs. Also during the visit I learned about things I didn’t know…. well, it’s a museum for a reason, isn’t it? 🙂

Otro lugar que visitamos al principio del viaje fue Edinburgo. Hace unos años tuvimos la suerte de recorrer esta ciudad llena de castillos, historias y la cordialidad de los escoceses y esta vez como se trataba de una parada de pocas horas elegimos una experiencia distinta que fue degustar whiskies y tratar de aprender lo básico para sacarle sonido a las tradicionales gaitas 😉 . Esta experiencia estuvo a cargo de Louise Marshall quien le puso muchísima energía a la actividad con su humor y trajes para la ocasión. Sin embargo no fue fácil llenar la bolsa de aire y luego hacer que la gaita suene más o menos bien. Barnaby junto con la mujer de las fotos fueron los únicos que pudieron sacarle un sonido decente al instrumento 🙂 . Fue una experiencia muy divertida y además, fuera de lo común.

Un detalle no menor es que fuimos muy afortunados de tener a Louise como anfitriona ya que no sólo es una profesional sino también referente en la música escocesa. Te invito a que mires su web y los eventos en los que participó y a quienes les dio la bienvenida 😉 .

Another place we visited at the beginning of the trip was Edinburgh. A few years ago we were lucky enough to visit this city full of castles, history and the cordiality of the Scots and this time as it was a few hours stop we chose a different experience which was to taste whiskies and try to learn the basics to get the sound of the traditional bagpipes 😉 . This experience was in charge of Louise Marshall who put a lot of energy to the activity with her humor and costumes for the occasion. However, it was not easy to fill the bag with air and then make the bagpipes sound more or less right. Barnaby along with the woman in the photos were the only ones who could get a reasonable sound out of the instrument 🙂 . It was a very fun and out of the usual experience.

A not insignificant detail is that we were very fortunate to have Louise as a hostess as she is not only a professional but also a reference in Scottish music.
