Los preparativos para este viaje comenzaron cuando encontré una hermosa libreta en Powell’s Books en Portland. Esto fue en octubre del 2022 y en ese momento me propuse tomar exhaustivas notas (¿no será mucho? 🙂 ) quiero decir notas más prolijas de lo que sería esta aventura que se concretaría en diciembre. Quiero contarte que la semilla de la curiosidad se plantó cuando tenía 15 o 16 años en una clase de Geografía y supe de la existencia del Desierto de Atacama. Lo que no supe en ese momento era que muchos años después el sueño de visitar este lugar se haría realidad.

Preparations for this trip began when I found a beautiful notebook at Powell’s Books in Portland. This was in October 2022, and at that time I set out to take exhaustive notes (won’t that be a lot? 🙂 ) I mean neater notes of what would be this adventure that would come to be in December. I want to tell you that the seed of curiosity was planted when I was 15 or 16 years old in a Geography class and I learned about the existence of the Atacama Desert. What I did not know at that time was that many years later the dream of visiting this place would come true.

Salimos rumbo hacia Santiago de Chile desde el Aeroparque de Buenos Aires cruzando obviamente la Cordillera de Los Andes. Atravesar esas montañas me parece tan magnífico que no importa cuántas veces lo haya hecho, siento que siempre descubro algo nuevo.

We left for Santiago de Chile from the Aeroparque in Buenos Aires, obviously through the Andes Mountains. Crossing those mountains seems so magnificent to me that no matter how many times I have done it, I feel I always discover something new.

Otro avión nos llevó desde Santiago hasta Calama, el aeropuerto más cercano a San Pedro de Atacama. Y esta fue la puesta del sol que pude ver minutos antes de aterrizar, fui muy afortunada de estar sentada cerca de la ventanilla 😉

Another plane took us from Santiago to Calama, the closest airport to San Pedro de Atacama. And this was the sunset I could see minutes before landing, I was very lucky to be sitting near the window 😉

San Pedro de Atacama es un pequeño pueblo donde están la mayoría de los hospedajes, restaurantes y negocios, es la base para ir a visitar lugares tales como el Valle de la Luna, las Lagunas Altiplánicas o el geiser El Tatio. Nosotros decidimos alquilar un auto en lugar de tomar excursiones para hacer esos recorridos. Siempre que podemos tenemos esta dinámica para sentirnos un poco más libres. Luego averiguando que los caminos podrían no estar asfaltados o con no tan fácil acceso, decidimos alquilar una camioneta 4×4 y nos llevamos una sorpresa porque estos vehículos los alquilan tanto a turistas como a mineros. Llamábamos mucho la atención cuando lo manejábamos marcha atrás y si no me crees, te invito a ver este video 🙂

San Pedro de Atacama is a small town where most of the lodgings, restaurants and stores are located, it is the base to visit places such as the Moon Valley, the Altiplanic Lagoons or the geyser El Tatio. We decided to rent a car instead of taking excursions to do these tours. Whenever we can we have this dynamic to feel more free. After finding out that the roads might not be asphalted or with not so easy access, we decided to rent a 4×4 truck and we were surprised because these vehicles are rented to both tourists and miners. We called a lot of attention when we drove it in reverse and if you don’t believe me, I invite you to watch this video 🙂

San Pedro de Atacama está a más de 3100 metros de altura, y es por eso que te recomiendo tomar ciertas precauciones para no apunarte (pequeño consejo de alguien que lo pasó muy mal en Puno, Perú por estar distraída 😉 ). Estos tips son caminar despacio, comer poco y tomar mucha agua y en lo posible cero alcohol. Dependiendo hacia donde vayas la altura puede variar, por ejemplo yendo hacia el geiser El Tatio (que ya te mencioné) poco a poco vas subiendo otros mil metros, algo que sentís mientras avanzás por el camino. Otro consejo es que uses protector solar, incluso si está nublado, y cuidado al abrirlo porque con el efecto de la altura tiende a explotar como si abrieras una botella de champagne 🙂

Recorrés kilómetros y kilómetros y nada parece crecer. Te encontrás con paisajes que te hacen pensar que estás en la luna (al menos por lo que vi en fotos, no porque haya estado 😉 ) y de pronto en medio de las rocas, en un ambiente súper seco aparece como de la nada una laguna llena de flamencos que contrastan con su rosado entre tantos tonos terrosos. Todo parece llenarse de vida viendo además las vicuñas junto con otras aves compartiendo ese oasis.

San Pedro de Atacama is over 3100 meters above sea level, and that’s why I recommend you to take certain precautions to avoid altitude sickness (a little advice from someone who had a hard time in Puno, Peru for being distracted 😉 ). These tips are to walk slowly, eat little and drink lots of water and as much as possible no alcohol. Depending on where you are going the altitude may vary, for example going to the geyser El Tatio (which I already mentioned) you will gradually climb another thousand meters, something you will feel as you go along the road. Another tip is to use sunscreen, even if it’s cloudy, and be careful when opening it because with the effect of the altitude it tends to explode as if you were opening a bottle of champagne 🙂

You travel kilometers and kilometers and nothing seems to grow. You find landscapes that make you think you are on the moon (at least from what I saw in pictures, not because I have been there 😉 ) and suddenly in the middle of the rocks, in a super dry environment appears as if out of nowhere a lagoon full of flamingos that contrast with their pink among so many earth tones. Everything seems to be full of life, seeing the vicuñas and other birds sharing this oasis.

Algo que miro con atención en lo viajes de ruta son los carteles de los animales con los que podría encontrarme en el camino. Esto es algo nuevo y lo encuentro muy interesante porque cada lugar tiene su fauna específica. No te digo cuánto me emociono cuando tengo la suerte de verlos.

Something I look at very attentively on road trips are the signs of the animals I might encounter along the way. This is something new and I find it very interesting because each place has its own specific fauna. I can’t tell you how excited I get when I am lucky enough to see them.

Además de los carteles señalando animales también estuve atenta a otros tales como el del cruce del Trópico de Capricornio y este otro tan particular en uno de los negocios del pueblo donde es posible comprar oxígeno y tabaco en el mismo lugar. Eso si que es practicidad y servicio al cliente 😉

In addition to the signs indicating animals, I was also looking out for others such as the one for the crossing of the Tropic of Capricorn and this particular one in one of the stores in town where it is possible to buy oxygen and tobacco in the same place. Now that’s convenience and customer service 😉

Nos recomendaron probar los helados hechos con productos típicos de la zona, así que ir a una heladería parecía un paseo prometedor. ¡Y valió la pena! Allí encontramos que los empleados eran súper amables y te daban cucharitas para que degustaras esos sabores distintos como quinoa leche, flor del desierto, pisco sour o ayrampo cactus, entre otros 😛

We were encouraged to try the ice creams made with typical products of the area, so going to an ice cream shop seemed like a promising trip. And it was worth it! We found that the employees were very friendly and gave you spoons to taste those different flavors such as quinoa milk, desert flower, pisco sour or ayrampo cactus, among others 😛

Nuestro viaje tuvo algunos episodios insólitos. Estábamos muy entusiasmados con ver los cielos estrellados ya que dicen que es uno de los mejores lugares para ver planetas y estrellas. Sin embargo no tuvimos la oportunidad porque tuvimos noches nubladas y además porque mientras estábamos recorriendo vimos como erupcionó el volcán Láscar. Más tarde nos enteramos que esa erupción provocó además un sismo que afortunadamente no sentimos. Y si te preguntás si tuve miedo, la respuesta es un si rotundo :O

Our trip had some unusual episodes. We were very excited to see the stars in the skies as they say it is one of the best places to see planets and stars. However, we did not have the opportunity because we had cloudy nights and also because while we were touring we saw the eruption of the Láscar volcano. Later we found out that this eruption also caused an earthquake that fortunately we did not feel. And if you ask yourself if I was afraid, the answer is a definite yes :O

Por suerte no hubo victimas o daños mayores por la erupción pero muchos caminos fueron cerrados por precaución. Al día siguiente, las rutas ya estaban abiertas aunque absolutamente vacías. Éramos el único vehículo en el camino y más allá de que era un día soleado había algo de apocalíptico en ese ambiente, aunque te parezca exagerado.

Luckily there were no casualties or major damage from the eruption but many roads were closed as a precaution. The next day, the roads were open but absolutely empty. We were the only vehicle on the way and even though it was a sunny day, there was something apocalyptic in that atmosphere, even though it may seem exaggerated.

También tuvimos algunas situaciones extrañas como por ejemplo no poder entrar al Salar Aguas Calientes porque la compra y validación del ticket era algo complicada (una de las cosas para tener en cuenta si no vas con un tour). Fue increíble ver el lugar vacío y no poder ingresar. Mientras recorríamos la ruta vimos que se aproximaba una tormenta eléctrica (¡no sabes lo que eran los relámpagos y truenos!) y debido a esa situación cerraron los accesos a las Lagunas Altiplánicas, así que tampoco pudimos visitarlas. De cualquier manera disfrutamos de los alrededores. Y quizás como nos quedaron tantos pendientes tengamos que volver en algún otro momento 😉

We also had some odd situations like not being able to get into the Salar Aguas Calientes because the purchase and validation of the ticket was a bit complicated (one of the things to keep in mind if you don’t go with a tour). It was incredible to see the place empty and not be able to access it. While we were driving along the road we saw that a thunderstorm was approaching (the lightning and thunder were incredible!) and due to that situation they closed the access to the Altiplanic Lagoons, so we couldn’t visit them either. Anyway we enjoyed the surroundings. And maybe as we had so many things to do we will have to come back some other time 😉

Fue un día muy extraño respecto a accesos, sin embargo si pudimos visitar la Laguna Chaxa donde está la Reserva Nacional «Los Flamencos» y allí es posible recorrer algunos caminos de sal donde si prestas atención encontrás lagartijas camufladas con el ambiente y obviamente verás una gran cantidad de flamencos. Un verdadero paraíso.

It was a very strange day regarding access, however we were able to visit the Chaxa Lagoon where the National Reserve «Los Flamencos» is located and there it is possible to walk along some salt roads where if you watch carefully you will find lizards camouflaged with the environment and obviously you will see a large number of flamingos. A real paradise.

Los cielos son mi debilidad y cada lugar tiene su magia, su particularidad. Estando en la altura siento que los azules, grises y ni que hablar de los rojos en las puestas de sol son más intensos. Y las nubes más algodonosas, más densas, no sé como explicarlo, soy una enamorada de mirar para arriba.¿Existe manera de explicar el amor? Yo creo que no 🙂

The skies are my weakness and each place has its magic, its particularity. Being at altitude I feel that the blues, grays and not to mention the reds at sunset are more intense. And the clouds are thicker and they look like cotton. I don’t know how to explain it, I’m in love with looking up, is there a way to explain love? I don’t think so 🙂

Todo llama la atención en esta parte del planeta que es de alguna forma tan impredecible por sus fenómenos naturales. Nosotros fuimos con un plan y sin embargo tuvimos que cambiarlo y adaptarnos a lo que la naturaleza nos propuso. Ir a Atacama es eso, no saber qué es lo que puede suceder, no tener el control, como es la vida misma, simplemente que acá se ve de manera un poco más cruda.

Everything is striking in this part of the planet that is somehow so unpredictable because of its natural events. We went with a plan and yet we had to change it and adapt to what nature proposed to us. Going to Atacama is like that, not knowing what can happen, not being in control, as is life itself, only that here it is seen a little more harshly.
