My name is Andrea Lopez, I am a mixed media artist currently living in Portland, OR.
Originally from Colombia has made the United States my home for the last 20 years.
And here is my story…

Mi nombre es Andrea Lopez, soy artista, especializada en técnica mixta y actualmente vivo en Portland, Oregon.
Nací en Colombia, pero los Estados Unidos se convirtieron en mi hogar durante los últimos 20 años.
Y esta es mi historia …

I never had an art class growing up however I remember my love for drawing and
making collages in school. My imagination was ample and I would write stories,songs and poems.

I desperately wanted to make things, so I began sewing clothes
for my dolls at my parent’s small clothing factory.

De niña nunca tuve clases de arte, sin embargo, recuerdo mi amor por el dibujo y hacer collages en la escuela. Mi imaginación era amplia y escribía historias, canciones y poemas.

Quería desesperadamente hacer cosas, así que comencé a coser ropa
para mis muñecas en la pequeña fábrica de ropa de mis padres.

At age 6, I announced to my father that I wanted to be an artist. A choice they didn’t find practical or financially wise when you live in a country like Colombia. The deeper truth was that I was dreaming of a life that didn’t yet exist but that I believed was possible.

A los 6 años le anuncié a mi padre que quería ser artista. Una elección que no creyó ni práctica o económicamente prudente, viviendo en un país como Colombia.
La profunda verdad era que estaba soñando con una vida que aún no existía pero que yo creía posible.

Following my desire to help others and my love for learning, I became a physician in my native country and formally trained as a pediatrician in the United States.

Over time and while going thru the motions of solitude and longing, I found a way back to my art.  I realized that I was missing beauty and creativity. I needed more than the practice of medicine in my life.

Siguiendo con mi deseo de ayudar a los demás y mi amor por aprender, me convertí en médica en mi país natal para luego formarme como pediatra en los Estados Unidos.

La mezcla de emociones como la soledad y el anhelo, que muchas veces aparecieron, me hicieron encontrar un camino de regreso a mi arte. Me di cuenta que extrañaba la belleza y creatividad y que necesitaba en mi vida, algo más que practicar solamente medicina.

I am currently a practicing pediatrician and self-taught artist. These 2 of my
passions interrelate with each other in a fine and intimate way and find common ground in my attention to detail easily found in my pieces. One brings the reasonable logic and linear thinking in me while the other, allows me to dream, to imagine, to take risks.

Actualmente soy pediatra en ejercicio y artista autodidacta. Estas dos pasiones se interrelacionan entre sí de una manera fina e íntima y encuentran un espacio común en mi atención al detalle que puede verse fácilmente en mis cuadros. Una de ellas me permite ser lógica y tener un pensamiento lineal, mientras que la otra, me permite soñar, imaginar y correr riesgos.

My paintings are inspired by the things I love and the magic of color. Each piece is made of layers of collage, stencils, acrylic paint and texture aiming to elevate the ordinary in thoughtful and often whimsical ways. My art is meant to inject more joy
into our daily existence.

Mis pinturas están inspiradas en las cosas que amo y en la magia del color. Cada pieza está hecha con capas de collage, plantillas, pinturas acrílicas y textura con el objetivo de elevar lo habitual de manera reflexiva y a menudo caprichosa. Mi arte está destinado a inyectar más alegría en nuestra existencia diaria.

In the words of Henry Miller,

That is why I paint.
