After Brian Anderson’s lovely blended piece of work pairing artists work http://viajesaventurasymuchomas.com/2021/09/26/brian-and-sandie-anderson-with-another-artistic-friends/ Laura suggested that Ilona and I got together to produce a joint piece of work. We had all met in Vietnam and travelled through to Cambodia and some of our group then went on to Laos. Ilona lives in Australia and I live
in the UK , England to be more specific.
Different hemispheres, different climates but an abundance of shared cultures and a love of travelling and learning to name but a few things bond us together. But what to present to Laura?
She wanted something by December and then it came to us. Christmas how different could this special time be in our respective countries.

y yo nos reuniéramos para producir una obra conjunta. Nos conocimos todos en Vietnam y habíamos viajado
a Camboya y algunos de nuestro grupo fueron también a Laos. Ilona vive en Australia y yo en el Reino Unido, en Inglaterra para ser más específica.
Hemisferios diferentes, climas diferentes, pero una abundancia de culturas compartidas y un amor por
viajar y aprender, por nombrar sólo algunas cosas que nos unen. ¿Pero qué le presentaríamos a Laura?
Ella quería algo para diciembre y entonces nosotras pensamos en La Navidad, ¿qué tan diferente podría ser esta época especial en nuestros respectivos países?

We agreed to look through our photos to see what we had that represents how we feel about Christmas.

Acordamos revisar nuestras fotos para ver qué teníamos que representara lo que sentimos sobre la Navidad.

In my house Christmas always starts early as we have four other couples for a lovely long lunch and an exchange of presents. This is traditionally the first weekend in December. They all live a distance away from us travelling from Scotland, Yorkshire, and the Liverpool area to come to us in Manchester. Historically their children used to come too so between us adding 12 to the number and therefore up to 22. Two separate sittings used to take place and the food was invariably a large amount of chilli con Carne. It will be large pans full of different curries this year. The tree was always up and decorated, decorations around the house with lights outside to add to the atmosphere. One couple has always brought us some form of musical Christmas decoration so we have lots of singing Christmas trees, reindeers and dogs but no musical pandas. Apologies Laura 🙂 . We are up and down the stairs to the roof collecting boxes full of STUFF for days beforehand.

Once this day has passed it is time for wrapping presents and hoping for cold weather as opposed to the regular drizzle which is common around Manchester. 

En mi casa la Navidad siempre empieza temprano, ya que tenemos otras cuatro parejas para un largo almuerzo e intercambio de regalos. Esto es tradicionalmente el primer fin de semana de diciembre. Todos ellos viven lejos de nosotros y viajan desde Escocia, Yorkshire y la zona de Liverpool para venir a vernos a Manchester. Históricamente, sus hijos solían venir también, por lo que entre todos sumamos 12 y a veces hasta 22. Se solían hacer dos sentadas separadas y la comida era invariablemente una gran cantidad de chilli con Carne. Este año serán grandes sartenes llenas de diferentes currys. El árbol estaba siempre en pie y decorado, con adornos alrededor de la casa y luces en el exterior para crear ambiente. Una pareja siempre nos ha traído algún tipo de decoración navideña musical, así que tenemos un montón de árboles de Navidad cantantes, renos y perros, pero no pandas musicales. Perdón, Laura :). Estamos subiendo y bajando las escaleras hasta el tejado recogiendo cajas llenas de cosas durante días antes.

Una vez que ha pasado este día, es el momento de envolver los regalos y esperar que el tiempo sea frío en lugar de la llovizna habitual que es común en los alrededores de Manchester. 

Pre pandemic there would have been trips to friends’ houses and lots of mulled wine . we have always gone to
the large Christmas tree in the village on Christmas eve to sing carols, the road is closed by the police and a local brass band plays away.

Christmas used to be a busy day with our children but as they have grown up and had their own children we are sometimes just the two of us. However we always have a turkey with two different stuffings, bread sauce, plenty of vegetables after some sort of starter, usually smoked salmon.

Although we like Christmas pudding we revert to our Scottish roots and have tipsy laird. A trifle made with sponges soaked in a mixture of brandy and sherry, topped with home made custard and then covered in whipped cream.
I find it hard to imagine a Christmas spent in the sun but imagine the sentiments and traditions remain very similar. Doing this for Laura has made me realise I have never taken many photos of this special time over the years which is a shame.

However wherever we are in the world this is a special time and from our point of view we can enjoy the time with friends and family and make the most of it.

Antes de la pandemia se hacían viajes a casas de amigos y se bebía mucho vino caliente.
También íbamos al gran árbol de Navidad en el pueblo en la víspera de Navidad para cantar villancicos, la carretera estaba cerrada por la policía ya que una banda de música local tocaba afuera.

La Navidad solía ser un día muy ajetreado con nuestros hijos, pero como ellos han crecido y han tenido sus propios hijos, a veces nos quedamos los dos solos. Sin embargo, siempre tenemos un pavo con dos rellenos diferentes, salsa de pan, muchas verduras y algún tipo de entrada, normalmente salmón ahumado.

Aunque nos gusta el pudín de Navidad, volvemos a nuestras raíces escocesas y comemos «tipsy laird». Se trata de un trifle hecho con bizcochos empapados en una mezcla de brandy y jerez, cubierto con crema pastelera casera y luego cubierto con nata.
Me resulta difícil imaginar una Navidad pasándola al sol, pero imagino que los sentimientos y las tradiciones siguen siendo muy similares. Hacer esto para Laura me ha hecho darme cuenta de que nunca he tomado muchas fotos de esta época tan especial a lo largo de los años, lo cual es una pena.

De cualquier forma, sea cual sea el lugar del mundo en el que nos encontremos, se trata de una época especial y, desde nuestro punto de vista, podemos disfrutar del tiempo con los amigos y la familia y aprovecharlo al máximo.

Alan and I live in a lovely, leafy suburb  of Sydney, Australia.
Being in the Southern Hemisphere, the weather is wonderfully hot, often in the high 30s or even 40s! Needless to say, there are lots of cold drinks and summer clothes – and definitely no snow!! Our lovely Australian Christmas Bush is in full bloom and we often use it to decorate our front door with a welcoming wreath.
 Every year, we enjoy celebrating Christmas with family and friends. We often have pre-Christmas get-togethers with good friends and neighbours, then on Christmas Day, we always have a wonderful day, celebrating with family. People start arriving just after breakfast and the festivities continue until late in the evening. We usually have about 20 people over and it’s really lovely gathering together for this special occasion.

Alan y yo vivimos en un precioso y frondoso barrio de Sídney (Australia).
Al estar en el hemisferio sur, el tiempo es maravillosamente caluroso, a menudo a 30 o incluso 40 grados. No hace falta decir que hay muchas bebidas frías y ropa de verano, ¡y definitivamente nada de nieve! Nuestro precioso arbusto navideño australiano está en plena floración y a menudo lo utilizamos para decorar nuestra puerta principal con una corona de bienvenida.
Todos los años nos gusta celebrar la Navidad con la familia y los amigos. A menudo tenemos reuniones prenavideñas con buenos amigos y vecinos, y el día de Navidad siempre pasamos un día maravilloso, celebrándolo con la familia. La gente empieza a llegar justo después del desayuno y la fiesta continúa hasta bien entrada la noche. Normalmente vienen unas 20 personas y es muy agradable reunirse para esta ocasión tan especial.

Apart from Turkey and ham, we always have a stack of seafood (perfect for the hot weather) – lobsters, crab, scallops and HEAPS of delicious prawns! As well as the traditional plum pudding, we always have a delicious pavlova, always so popular at Christmas time ‘Down Under’.
The air conditioning is always on ‘cool’ and the cold champagne flows freely 😉 !

Además del pavo y el jamón, siempre tenemos grandes cantidades de mariscos (perfectos para el calor): langostas, cangrejos, vieiras y montones de deliciosas gambas. Además del tradicional budín de ciruelas, siempre tenemos una deliciosa pavlova, muy popular en la época navideña «Down Under».
El aire acondicionado está siempre en «frío» y el champán fluye libremente 😉 !

After dinner, we all gather around the Christmas tree and exchange gifts, amidst the delighted laughter of the grandchildren. There are happy smiles all round! Afterwards, my brother plays our piano and we all join in singing Christmas carols – traditional and Australian.

On Boxing Day, Alan and I head up the coast to our beach house at Toowoon Bay, to just chill and wind down. I hang fairy lights all around the deck and the Christmas spirit continues. Even the life guards at the beach share the Christmas spirit, with reindeer antlers to go with their uniforms! Such fun!!
I really love Christmas and every year, I look forward to celebrating this very special time of the year!

Después de la cena, nos reunimos todos alrededor del árbol de Navidad e intercambiamos regalos, entre las risas felices de nuestros nietos. Hay sonrisas de felicidad por todas partes. Después, mi hermano toca el piano y todos nos unimos para cantar villancicos, tradicionales y australianos.

El día de San Esteban, Alan y yo nos dirigimos a nuestra casa de la playa en la bahía de Toowoon para relajarnos y descansar. Cuelgo luces de hadas por toda la terraza y el espíritu navideño continúa. Incluso los socorristas de la playa comparten el espíritu navideño, con cuernos de reno que combina con sus uniformes. ¡Qué divertido!
Me encanta la Navidad y todos los años estoy deseando celebrar esta época tan especial del año.
