En cada vuelta a Buenos Aires amo redescubrir lugares que estuvieron frente a mis ojos, que miré sin realmente verlos, que aprecié pero no en su totalidad y que ahora con ojos renovados y llenos de curiosidad los disfruto plenamente.

Hoy quiero contarte sobre el Museo Fotográfico Simik https://www.instagram.com/museosimik/ ubicado en la esquina de la Avenida Federico Lacroze y Fraga en el barrio de Chacarita; en el cual viví durante casi diez años y al que iba con frecuencia a encontrarme con amigas, a veces sola a tomar un café y alguna que otra vez a escuchar jazz. 

Each time I return to Buenos Aires I love to rediscover places that were in front of my eyes, that I looked at without really seeing them, that I appreciated but not in their entirety and that now with renewed eyes and curiosity I enjoy them to the maximum.

Today I want to tell you about the Museo Fotográfico Simik https://www.instagram.com/museosimik/ located on the corner of Avenida Federico Lacroze and Fraga in the neighborhood of Chacarita; where I lived for almost ten years and where I often went to meet friends, sometimes alone for a coffee and once in a while to listen to jazz.

Lo maravilloso de este café es que al ingresar te encontrás con una enorme colección de cámaras fotográficas de todos los tiempos que se exhiben en vitrinas y además debajo de sus mesas de vidrio. Entrar al Simik es sumergirse en una atmósfera histórica.

The wonderful thing about this café is that when you walk in you will find a large collection of photographic cameras of all times displayed in showcases and also under its glass tables. To enter the Simik is to immerse yourself in a historical atmosphere.

Unos días atrás mientras caminaba por el barrio de Belgrano, volví a sentir ganas de escribir sobre Buenos Aires y decidí contactarme con artistas y lugares representativos de la ciudad. En esa búsqueda encontré que el Museo Fotográfico Simik es desde el 2011 uno de los “bares notables” de Buenos Aires; esto significa que es considerado parte del patrimonio cultural de la ciudad.

A few days ago while walking through the neighborhood of Belgrano, I felt like writing about Buenos Aires again and decided to contact artists and representative places of the city. I found that the Museo Fotográfico Simik is since 2011 one of the «bares notables» of Buenos Aires; this means that it is considered part of the cultural heritage of the city.

Decidí ponerme en contacto con Alejandro Simik, dueño y creador del museo fotográfico quien muy amablemente me recibió en el local de Chacarita. Durante la conversación tuve la oportunidad de conocer sobre los comienzos de este bar y me gustaría compartirlo con vos.

I decided to get in touch with Alejandro Simik, owner and creator of the photographic museum who very kindly received me at the Chacarita location. During the conversation I had the opportunity to learn about the beginning of this bar and I would like to share it with you.

Alejandro comenzó con la colección de cámaras fotográficas en el año 2001. En estos momentos el local de Chacarita cuenta con dos mil cámaras muchas de ellas compradas, otras donadas y gran parte traídas a su local por cartoneros quienes las encontraban, créase o no, en la basura. Alejandro realizó un documental sobre el trabajo de los cartoneros en el año 2001, de allí el contacto con estas personas que han hecho un gran aporte al museo.

Alejandro started collecting cameras in 2001. At the moment, the Chacarita venue has two thousand cameras – many of them purchased, others donated, and a significant portion brought to the shop by waste pickers who, believe it or not, found them in the trash. In 2001, Alejandro produced a documentary about the work of waste pickers, establishing a link with people who have significantly contributed to the museum.

Su interés por la fotografía comenzó hace muchos años cuando fue bombero y luego perito de incendios. Me comentó que las fotos eran el relato de lo que había ocurrido en el incendio y esto le generó mucho interés; entonces comenzó a preguntarle a aquellos “artesanos” como él definió a quienes usaban sus cámaras Nikon Nikkormat, los flashes Metz y revelaban en blanco y negro (por una cuestión presupuestaria), cuáles eran los secretos para tomar buenas fotos. Esos fueron para él sus primeros pasos en el oficio.

His interest in photography began many years ago when he was a firefighter and later a fire investigator. He mentioned that photos served as a narrative of what had happened in the fire, sparking his keen interest. Subsequently, he started asking those «craftsmen,» as he defined those who used Nikon Nikkormat cameras, Metz flashes, and developed in black and white (due to budget constraints), about the secrets of capturing great photos. These were his initial steps in the profession.

Estudió fotografía en la Asociación de Fotógrafos, tomo varios cursos y entre sus maestros estuvo el italiano Aldo Bressi. Alejandro hizo varios trabajos de fotógrafo en eventos sociales y de una manera algo casual comenzó a enseñar fotografía.

Inicialmente Alejandro se reunía de manera informal con conocidos que se acercaban para hacerle preguntas específicas sobre fotografía. Sin embargo, la noticia se difundió y cada vez más personas se interesaron. Fue entonces cuando decidió organizar cursos más estructurados. Así, durante diez años, dos veces por semana, aquellos interesados en el arte fotográfico tuvieron a Alejandro Simik como su maestro en el sótano del museo.

He studied photography at the Asociación de Fotógrafos, took several courses, and had the Italian Aldo Bressi as one of his teachers. Alejandro worked as a photographer at social events and, somewhat casually, began teaching photography.

Initially, Alejandro informally met with acquaintances who approached him with specific questions about photography. However, word spread, and more and more people became interested. It was then that he decided to organize more structured courses. So, for ten years, twice a week, those interested in the art of photography had Alejandro Simik as their instructor in the museum’s basement.

El Museo Fotográfico comenzó a organizar muestras fotográficas y una vez por semana una banda de jazz tocaba en el local convirtiéndose en un referente artístico y cultural.

Actualmente diferentes bandas de jazz hacen sus shows los jueves, viernes y sábados de 20 a 22 horas.

El Museo Fotográfico started organizing photography exhibitions, and once a week, a jazz band played in the venue, becoming a cultural and artistic landmark.

Currently, various jazz bands perform on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8:00 to 10:00 PM.

Hace dos años, Alejandro Simik, junto con sus socios de la panadería Ronzino y Valenza, inauguraron un nuevo Museo Fotográfico en Perú 614, en el barrio de San Telmo, con una colección de seiscientas cámaras antiguas. Este establecimiento también cuenta con una panadería y una cafetería. El nuevo local se encuentra en una zona donde la historia de la ciudad de Buenos Aires se manifiesta en cada rincón.

Two years ago, Alejandro Simik, along with his partners from the Ronzino and Valenza bakery, opened a new Museo Fotográfico at Perú 614 in the San Telmo neighborhood, featuring a collection of six hundred vintage cameras. This establishment also houses a bakery and a café. The new location is situated in an area where the history of the city of Buenos Aires comes to life in every corner.

Este grupo tiene en marcha un proyecto emocionante: la inauguración de un nuevo bar temático dedicado al cine, con cámaras filmadoras antiguas y afiches de películas de todas las épocas.

El lugar elegido para este nuevo emprendimiento es en Chile 899, también en San Telmo, espacio donde estuvo el café Maraxe, frecuentado por nada menos que Jorge Luis Borges.

This group has an exciting project underway: the opening of a new themed bar dedicated to cinema, featuring vintage film cameras and posters from all eras.

The chosen location for this new venture is at Chile 899, also in San Telmo, the same space that once housed the Maraxe café, frequented by none other than Jorge Luis Borges.
