Vi a Euge Petre https://www.instagram.com/eugepetre/por primera vez un caluroso y húmedo mediodía de enero, mientras subida a una grúa, laqueaba uno de los murales que se encuentran pintados en los paredones del Cementerio de la Chacarita . Ese día estaba acompañada por El Marian https://www.instagram.com/el.mar.ian/ Juan Ra https://www.instagram.com/juan_rraa/ y una banda de mosquitos que les dificultaba el trabajo 😦

I saw Euge Petre https://www.instagram.com/eugepetre/ for the first time one hot and humid afternoon in January, while she was climbing on a crane, varnishing one of the murals painted on the walls of the Chacarita Cemetery. That day she was along with El Marian https://www.instagram.com/el.mar.ian/ Juan Ra https://www.instagram.com/juan_rraa/ and a band of mosquitoes that made their work difficult 😦

Luego de una breve presentación y charla con la gente de Pogo Producciones https://www.instagram.com/pogo.producciones/ caminé por la Avenida Jorge Newbery recorriendo el resto de las obras. Encontré un mural impactante no sólo por sus medidas (7 metros de alto por 60 metros de largo) sino también por el contenido.

Ese mural combinó los talentos de Euge Petre con los de Alan Myers https://www.instagram.com/myersalan/ plasmando la investigación de Euge sobre montañas sagradas andinas sumado a elementos rituales y chamánicos junto con el interés de Alan en la investigación de la diversidad de los cuerpos.

Ese mural fue el disparador para invitar a Euge Petre a participar en el proyecto de Amigas y Amigos Artistas y me alegró muchísimo que aceptara la propuesta.

After a brief introduction and chat with the people from Pogo Producciones https://www.instagram.com/pogo.producciones/ I walked along Jorge Newbery Avenue touring the rest of the works. I found a stunning mural not only for its size (7 meters high by 60 meters long) but also for its content.

That mural combined the talents of Euge Petre with those of Alan Myers https://www.instagram.com/myersalan/ capturing Euge’s research on sacred Andean mountains coupled with ritual and shamanic elements along with Alan’s interest in researching the diversity of bodies.

That mural was the trigger to invite Euge Petre to participate in the Artistic Friends project and I was very happy that she accepted the proposal.

Puerta Negra es un espacio donde los artistas trabajan en sus obras, brindan talleres y además se realizan actividades culturales. Una joya en el Barrio del Abasto.

We arranged to meet when I returned to Buenos Aires and in April I visited Puerta Negra https://www.instagram.com/estudiospuertanegra/ a space where Euge has her studio along with other artists such as El Marian https://www.instagram.com/el.mar.ian/ Nato & Polara https://www.instagram.com/innato27/ https://www.instagram.com/_polara/?img_index=1 Fer Rossjanski https://www.instagram.com/febuey/ among many others, and is also the headquarters of Pogo Producciones https://www.instagram.com/pogo.producciones/.

Puerta Negra is a venue where artists work on their creations, offer workshops and hold cultural activities. A jewel in the Abasto neighborhood.

Pasé a lo que ella llama «su oficina» un espacio amplio y ordenado, con un gran ventanal hacia la calle. Su mesa de trabajo tenía pinturas, una libreta donde hace bosquejos de lo que luego podrían convertirse en obras de mayor tamaño pintadas en óleo y en caballete y por supuesto el mate y el termo.

I went to what she calls «her office», a large and tidy space with a large window facing the street. Her work table had paints, a notebook where she makes sketches of what could later become larger works painted in oil and on easel and of course the mate 🧉

En una de las paredes de su estudio llaman la atención por su color y tamaño las pinturas (algunas terminadas y otras en proces) que pertenecen a la colección La impuntualidad de la muerte. El texto que inspiró esas obras es poesía pura y eso le da otra textura a sus pinturas (*)

«Lo único determinado es nuestro término. El fin de todo lo vivo es el devenir poético de lo que es y ya no será. Hermoso proceso. Lo decrépito y decadente es lo exquisito del vivir. Y la muerte simplemente su consecuencia lógica» Euge Petre

On one of the walls of her studio, the paintings (some finished and others in process) belonging to the collection La impuntualidad de la muerte (The unpunctuality of death) stand out for their color and size. The text that inspired these works is pure poetry and that gives another texture to her paintings (*).

«The only thing determined is our end. The end of everything alive is the poetic becoming of what is and will no longer be. Beautiful process. The decrepit and decadent is the exquisiteness of living. And death is simply its logical consequence.» Euge Petre

En otra pared del estudio pueden verse una colección de piedras de diferentes tamaños y texturas. Las piedras ejercen una atracción especial en Euge y a esa obra con dibujos y pinturas de las mismas la llamó Desnaturalización (*)

«Observando piedras por horas, analizándolas y dibujándolas incansablemente comprendí, recién entonces, que el estudio
naturalista de las formas no era lo que me interesaba. Buscaba asir su esencia, su fuerza interna, la historia trascurrida grabada en su material.

Allí comienza, como la he denominado, “La Máquina de Desnaturalizar”. La precisión obsesiva del trazo, la económica y concienzuda manera de utilizar los medios y los elementos pictóricos me transforman, a mi, en esa maquina que desnaturaliza. Un proceso, mas bien un ritual, de modificación.»

On another wall of the studio can be seen a collection of stones of different sizes and textures. Stones have a special attraction for Euge and he called this work with drawings and paintings of them Desnaturalización (Denaturalization) (*).

«Observing stones for hours, tirelessly analyzing and drawing them, I understood, only then, that the naturalistic study of forms was not what interested me.
I was seeking to grasp their essence, their inner strength, the history engraved in their material.

There begins, as I have called it, «The Denaturalizing Machine». The obsessive precision of the line, the economical and conscientious way of using the tools and the pictorial elements transform me into that machine that denaturalizes. A process, or rather a ritual, of modification».

Euge Petre

Euge me contó que siempre se dedicó al arte. Estudió Museología, dibujo, pintura y escenografía en el Teatro Colón. Ella considera que esos fueron sus primeros pasos para realizar obras a gran escala, algo que siempre le gustó y con ese conocimiento comenzó a pintar, desde hace muchos años, murales. Los primeros fueron para marcas comerciales en el barrio de Palermo y a medida que fue pasando el tiempo encontró su voz y un estilo propio para los mismos.

Me resultó curioso que no se considere muralista ya que participó en diferentes proyectos como con Pogo en el Barrio Mugica, en los murales de los paredones del Cementerio de Chacarita, en proyectos de pintado del bajo de la autopista General Paz y Alberdi, proyectos de barrios de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires y también en trabajos solicitados por particulares. Su impronta puede verse en diferentes calles de la ciudad.

Euge told me that she has always been dedicated to art. She studied museology, drawing, painting and scenography at the Theater Colón. She considers that those were her first steps to make large-scale works, something she always liked, and with that knowledge she started painting murals many years ago. The first ones were for commercial brands in the neighborhood of Palermo and as time went by she found her voice and her own style for them.

I found it curious that she does not consider herself a muralist since he participated in different projects such as with Pogo in Barrio Mugica, in the murals on the walls of the Chacarita Cemetery, in projects to paint the underneath of the General Paz and Alberdi highway, projects in neighborhoods of the City of Buenos Aires and also in works commissioned by individuals. Her imprint can be seen in different streets of the city.

«Mi práctica principal es la pintura. La pulsión por el pintar me lleva a plantear de manera expresiva las primeras manchas en diálogo directo con mi cuerpo, pero luego requiero de un momento de calma y análisis para direccionar la intención.
Mi trabajo necesita de un espectador activo, que pueda contemplar y tomarse el tiempo de ver en profundidad y con ojo crítico escudriñe en la superficie de la tela.
Busco los grandes formatos de obra, que superen las proporciones del cuerpo y hagan de la experiencia no solo una cuestión visual, sino corporal a la vez.
Una inmersión total.»

«My main practice is painting. The urge to paint leads me to expressively pose the first stains in direct dialogue with my body, but then I need a moment of calm and analysis to direct the intention.
My work needs an active spectator, who can contemplate and take the time to see in depth and with a critical eye scrutinize the surface of the canvas.
I look for large formats of work, which exceed the proportions of the body and make the experience not only a visual question, but a bodily one at the same time.
A total immersion.»
