Una cadena de hermosas coincidencias me llevaron a conocer a María Angélica Pérez https://www.instagram.com/la_lolaperez/ y a participar en uno de sus talleres en mayo del 2024 (*)

Comencé a seguir su cuenta de Instagram y al ver sus fotos combinadas con literatura sentí amor a primera vista. Más tarde cuando tuve la suerte de estar en Buenos Aires y experimentar lo que ocurre en esos encuentros que María organiza, reafirmé ese amor ❤️

Comparto la historia y recorrido de esta artista que creó una comunidad de mujeres maravillosas contada en sus propias palabras.

A sequence of beautiful coincidences led me to meet María Angélica Pérez https://www.instagram.com/la_lolaperez/ and to participate in one of her workshops in May 2024 (*).

I started following her Instagram account and when I saw her photos combined with literature I felt love at first sight. Later when I was lucky enough to be in Buenos Aires and experience what happens in those meetings that Maria organizes, I reaffirmed that love ❤️

I share the story and journey of this artist who created a community of wonderful women told in her own words.

«Cuando terminé el colegio secundario entre mis carreras preferidas siempre estuvo el periodismo y aunque coqueteé con sociología y asistencia social , al final ganó el periodismo aunque en mi familia no estuviesen vinculados a esta profesión».

«Siempre me gustó la posibilidad de investigar, hacer reportajes y contarlo en palabras. Para mi el periodismo es el gráfico aunque cada vez tenga menos espacio».

«Todavía no había terminado la carrera y empecé a colaborar en revistas de actualidad y eso me permitió conocer a colegas de renombre y lugares a los que de otra manera no hubiera tenido acceso. Comencé a caminar un camino que volvería a elegir siempre». 

«When I finished high school, journalism was always among my favorite careers, and although I flirted with sociology and social work, journalism won out in the end, even though my family was not linked to this profession».

«I always liked the possibility of investigating, reporting and expressing it in words. For me, journalism is graphic journalism, even though it has less and less space».

«I had not yet finished my degree and I started contributing to current affairs magazines and that allowed me to meet renowned colleagues and places I would not otherwise have had access to. I began to walk a path that I would always choose again.«

«Después de trabajar en varias revistas y diarios de manera estable, decidí volver a colaborar sin horarios fijos aunque cada vez había menos medios gráficos y ni que decir en la actualidad. Mi marido, también periodista, colaboraba para una revista que se editaba en Alemania para la comunidad hispanoparlante y necesitaban que los textos también sumaran fotos. Así empecé a estudiar fotografía. La idea era sólo aprender técnica para manejar la cámara en modo manual pero empecé y durante bastante tiempo no dejé de sumar clases sobre iluminación, composición, narrativa fotográfica».

«Mi mirada como periodista y el haber trabajado con grandes reporteros gráficos me permitió que el camino no fuera tan difícil. Me apasioné con la posibilidad de combinar la escritura y la fotografía, dos profesiones para las que me preparé. No soy improvisada, no me largo sin tener una formación».

«After working for several magazines and newspapers on a permanent position, I decided to return to collaborate without fixed schedules, even though there were fewer and fewer graphic media, not to mention nowadays. My husband, also a journalist, was working for a magazine published in Germany for the Spanish-speaking community and they needed to add photos to the texts. So I started to study photography. The idea was just to learn the technique to handle the camera in manual mode, but I started and for a long time I kept adding classes on lighting, composition, photographic narrative».

«My vision as a journalist and having worked with great photojournalists allowed me to make the path not so difficult. I became passionate about the possibility of combining writing and photography, two professions for which I prepared myself. I’m not improvised, I don’t go off without training.»

«Llegué a Instagram de casualidad y para ver, probar, elegí el nombre de mi perrita Lola y así abrí mi cuenta https://www.instagram.com/la_lolaperez/ . Era el año 2016 o 2017 y cada tanto subía una foto de ella o de algún libro. De a poco se armó una comunidad muy linda, nos ayudábamos y algunas llegamos a conocernos personalmente. Todo era más fraterno porque aún no éramos tantos en esta red».

«I came to Instagram by chance and to see, to try, I chose the name of my dog Lola and so I opened my account https://www.instagram.com/la_lolaperez/ . It was 2016 or 2017 and every now and then I would upload a photo of her or of a book. Little by little a very nice community was formed, we helped each other and some of us got to know each other personally. Everything was more fraternal because there were not yet so many of us in this network.»

«Un día me pregunté ¿por qué no armar un taller con mis dos pasiones y difundirlo por Instagram? y así nació #alacalleconla_lola: fotografía callejera a la que sumé de a poco literatura y escritura. En la primera salida por San Telmo vinieron siete personas, algunas vienen actualmente. Luego de esa caminata siguieron otros encuentros por distintos barrios. La comunicación boca a boca fue lo mejor». 

«One day I asked myself why not put together a workshop with my two passions and spread it through Instagram, and that’s how #alacalleconla_lola was born: street photography to which I added literature and writing little by little. In the first tour in San Telmo seven people came, some of them are still coming. After that walk, other events in different neighborhoods followed. Word of mouth was the best way to communicate».

«Durante la pandemia hice tres o cuatro talleres por zoom pero al no poder callejear sentía que me faltaba algo fundamental. Fotografiar en la calle es siempre un desafío. Y durante el segundo año de pandemia no postee nada, me dedique a leer, estudiar, investigar. Y me hizo bien, no paraba de leer y escribir».

«During the pandemic I did three or four workshops by zoom but not being able to go out on the street I felt I was missing something essential. Photographing in the street is always a challenge. And during the second year of the pandemic I didn’t post anything, I dedicated myself to reading, studying, researching. And it was good for me, I couldn’t stop reading and writing».

«Hasta que en el otoño de 2022 volví con un nuevo taller en San Telmo , el barrio donde vivo y siempre me abraza. Desde entonces hago un encuentro por mes, a veces dos y cada día amo más comunicarme con la gente de esta manera. Me preparo para cada taller, lo tomo muy en serio porque hay muchos sentimientos en las imágenes y las palabras. Siempre digo que hablar de fotografía es casi como hablar de uno mismo y a eso apunto en mis talleres: no importa que la recorrida sea por un barrio u otro, la verdadera recorrida es por uno y sólo de esta manera vamos a lograr un estilo».

«And in the fall of 2022 I came back with a new workshop in San Telmo , the neighborhood where I live and always embraces me. Since then I do one gathering per month, sometimes two and every day I love more and more to communicate with people in this way. I prepare for each workshop, I take it very seriously because there are many feelings in the images and words. I always say that talking about photography is almost like talking about yourself and that’s what I aim at in my workshops: it doesn’t matter if the tour is for one neighborhood or another, the real tour is for you and only in this way we will achieve a style».

Me interesó de inmediato.

Busqué la cuenta de Instagram de la que me enamoré al instante y tuve la suerte de poder participar del taller sobre el Otoño que comenzó en el café Santa Roseta https://www.instagram.com/santarosetacafeok/ con fragmentos del libro de Henry Thoreau, con fotografías de esa estación, algunas tomadas por María Angélica Pérez y otras por artistas como Oscar Pintor, Willy Ronis, Sara Facio o Rene-Jacques entre otros; mezcladas con poemas (algunos muy emotivos), tips fotográficos y luego una caminata para tomar fotos por las calles del barrio de Belgrano.

Encontré a un grupo de mujeres entusiastas y llenas de energía que le dieron potencia al encuentro. Estoy muy agradecida por haber tenido la oportunidad de realizar esta actividad que recomiendo muy especialmente.

she recommended me a workshop organized by https://www.instagram.com/la_lolaperez/ with a proposal that combined street photography with literature. I was immediately interested.

I looked for the Instagram account and I instantly fell in love with and I was lucky to be able to participate in the workshop on Autumn that started at the Santa Roseta café https://www.instagram.com/santarosetacafeok/ with fragments of Henry Thoreau’s book, with photographs of that season, some taken by María Angélica Pérez and others by artists like Oscar Pintor, Willy Ronis, Sara Facio or Rene-Jacques among others; mixed with poems (some very emotional), photographic tips and then a walk to take pictures through the streets of Belgrano neighborhood.

I met a group of enthusiastic and energetic women who gave power to the meeting. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in this activity and I highly recommend it.
