Sospecho que fue el algoritmo de Instagram que haciendo bien sus tareas me conectó con Medio Pan y un Libro 😉 https://www.instagram.com/mediopanlibros/ una librería ubicada en la esquina de Virrey Avilés y 14 de Julio en el Barrio de Villa Ortúzar.

Comencé a seguir sus publicaciones donde recomiendan libros de diversas temáticas y además suben videos muy entretenidos. El que les comparto muestra a personas que no pueden dejar de leer sin importar la actividad que estén realizando, un poco lo que nos pasa cuando un libro nos atrapa 😉

I guess it was the Instagram algorithm doing its homework well that connected me with Medio Pan y un Libro 😉 (the name means Half a Loaf and a Book) https://www.instagram.com/mediopanlibros/ a bookstore located on the corner of Virrey Avilés and 14 de Julio in the neighborhood of Villa Ortúzar.

I started to follow their posts where they recommend books on different topics and also upload very entertaining videos. The one I share with you shows people who can’t stop reading no matter what activity they are doing, a little bit of what happens to us when a book captures us 😉

Llegué caminando desde Belgrano al Barrio de Villa Ortúzar una tarde muy fría de otoño. Me encontré con un local de café llamado Medio Pan y un Libro; que en agosto cumplirá un año; y que además de servir cosas ricas, tiene ejemplares de libros para revisar mientras disfrutas de un momento de relajación.

I arrived walking from Belgrano to the neighborhood of Villa Ortúzar one very cold autumn afternoon. I came across a coffee shop called Medio Pan y un Libro, which in August will be one year old; and besides serving delicious things, it has books to review while you enjoy a moment of relaxation.

Medio Pan y un Libro está ubicada en una ochava, lo que le confiere a esa esquina una belleza particular, con dos grandes vidrieras repletas de libros y plantas en el exterior. Ese verde combinado con el toldo amarillo y blanco, una mesa con sillas, un banco de madera y un rack para bicicletas le dan un encanto especial al lugar.

Medio Pan y un Libro is set back from the corner, which gives it a particular beauty, with two large windows full of books and plants on the outside. That green combined with the yellow and white canopy, a table with chairs, a wooden bench and a bicycle rack give the place a special charm.

El nombre Medio Pan y un libro está inspirado en el manifiesto de Federico García Lorca en favor de los libros y la lectura y fue leído en voz alta, durante la inauguración de la biblioteca pública en su pueblo Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, en 1931.

A continuación comparto un fragmento.

«No sólo de pan vive el hombre. Yo, si tuviera
hambre y estuviera desvalido en la calle no
pediría un pan; sino que pediría medio pan y
un libro».

The name Medio Pan y un libro was inspired by Federico García Lorca’s manifesto in favor of books and reading and was read aloud during the inauguration of the public library in his town Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, in 1931.

Below I share an extract.

«Man does not live by bread alone. If I were hungry
and helpless in the street, I would not ask for a loaf
of bread; I would ask for half a loaf and a book».

Si el lugar parecía encantador desde afuera al ingresar a Medio Pan y un Libro la verdadera magia se revela. Altas estanterías con libros de narrativa y donde también podés encontrar material especializado en los intereses y profesiones de sus dueñxs Lara y Ariel, Sociología y Antropología respectivamente.

Ariel me comentó que desde un inicio, la librería trabajó su catálogo de manera muy curada, especializándose en temáticas ligadas a las Ciencias Sociales, etnobotánica y a los feminismos, buscando también libros específicos por encargo de lxs lectorxs. No obstante, Medio Pan y un Libro creció con la incorporación de una importante oferta de narrativa argentina, latinoamericana y universal, trabajando especialmente con editoriales y distribuidoras independientes y alternativas.

If the place looked charming from the outside, when you walk into Medio Pan y un Libro the real magic is revealed. High shelves with narrative books and where you can also find specialized material in the interests and professions of its owners Lara and Ariel, Sociology and Anthropology respectively.

Ariel told me that from the beginning, the bookstore worked its catalog in a very curated way, specializing in topics related to Social Sciences, ethnobotanics and feminisms, also looking for specific books requested by the readers. However, Medio Pan y un Libro grew with the incorporation of an important offer of Argentine, Latin American and universal narrative, working especially with independent and alternative publishers and distributors.

Algo que pude comprobar ya que estaba en la búsqueda del libro «Nada dentro salvo el vacío» de Ana Catania https://www.instagram.com/galactica1980/ de la editorial independiente Añosluz https://www.instagram.com/aniosluzeditora/ y para mi alegría ellos lo tenían.

Something I could check since I was looking for the book “Nada dentro salvo el vacío” by Ana Catania https://www.instagram.com/galactica1980/ from the independent publishing house Añosluz https://www.instagram.com/aniosluzeditora/ and to my joy they had it.

Por otro lado y siguiendo en la misma modalidad, la incorporación de un catálogo cuidado de literatura infantil ubicó a la librería como una excelente opción para toda la familia.

On the other hand, the incorporation of a carefully curated catalog of children’s literature made the bookstore an excellent option for the whole family.

Respecto a los inicios de Medio Pan y un Libro, esta fue la respuesta de Ariel

«Si bien la librería como comercio a la calle comenzó en el 2020, un mes antes de la pandemia, la misma ya tenia 2 años de recorrido. Estábamos ubicados en otro de los hermosos barrios porteños, Boedo. Funcionaba como showroom, librería itinerante (ferias), y mucho trabajo en redes sociales. Por eso mismo, cuando llegó la pandemia, el trabajo realizado años atrás nos permitió atravesar, ya que teníamos los canales adecuados. La pandemia, para la librería fue un momento de mucho crecimiento, a lo largo de ella continuamos reinventándonos (envíos gratis, recomendaciones, y otras diversas iniciativas)».

Regarding the beginnings of Medio Pan y un Libro, this was Ariel’s answer

«Even though the bookstore as a street store started in 2020, a month before the pandemic, it had already been around for 2 years. We were located in another of the beautiful neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, Boedo. It worked as a showroom, itinerant bookstore (fairs), and a lot of work in social networks. That is why, when the pandemic arrived, the work we had done years before allowed us to go through, since we had the right channels. The pandemic, for the bookstore, was a time of much growth, throughout it we continued to reinvent ourselves (free shipping, recommendations, and various other initiatives)«.

«A lo largo de estos años hemos realizado muchas actividades circundantes al mundo del libro, desde talleres de escritura, talleres de lectura, presentaciones de libros, Jam de poesía. Una de las cosas que más nos gustan de estos eventos es que todos los realizamos en la calle, en la vereda, y eso hace que los vecinos se enteren, les de interés, se acerquen, que gente que está con su auto frene y se baje a escuchar lo que está pasando».

«Throughout these years we have carried out many activities around the world of books, from writing workshops, reading workshops, book presentations, poetry jam.One of the things we like most about these events is that they are all held on the street, on the sidewalk, and that makes the neighbors find out about them, it makes them interested, they come closer, people who are in their cars stop and get out to listen to what is going on».
