Parallel Worlds https://www.instagram.com/parallelworldsbookshop/ is a bookstore specializing in science fiction and fantasy books located at 2639 NE Alberta St in Portland. I discovered it thanks to Portland Book Week https://www.instagram.com/portlandbookweek/ and decided to stop by last weekend.

When I arrived I found a shop painted in a vibrant blue and a table outside with a selection of used books. Its window display with books on display and a T-shirt hanging with the Parallel Worlds logo completed the landscape of this eye-catching place.

La descubrí gracias al Portland Book Week https://www.instagram.com/portlandbookweek/ y decidí darme una vuelta por allí el fin de semana pasado.

Al llegar me encontré con un local pintado de un vibrante azul y una mesa afuera con una selección de libros en oferta. Su vidriera con libros en exhibición y una remera colgada con el logo de Parallel Worlds terminaba de completar el paisaje de este llamativo lugar.

Although the store is small, it is surprising for the large number of books distributed on shelves and stacked near the counter and on an improvised table with boxes covered with a tablecloth where the books on sale are located. A colorful quilt with the embroidered name made by the local artist Biz Miller https://www.instagram.com/biz__miller/ hangs over the counter framing the colorful walls.

El local si bien es pequeño sorprende por la gran cantidad de libros distribuidos en estanterías y además apilados cerca del mostrador y en una mesa improvisada con cajas cubiertas con un mantel donde se encuentran los libros en oferta. Un colorido quilt con el nombre bordado por la artista local Biz Miller https://www.instagram.com/biz__miller/ cuelga sobre el mostrador dándole marco a las paredes coloridas.

I was welcomed by Sam its owner, originally from Portland and a lover of science fiction and poetry. I asked if there is poetry in science and fiction and he showed me the book by Andrew Joron, a Science Fiction poet and translator from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Sam told me that Parallel Worlds opened its doors in 2022, at first with very few books, something that seeing it today seems impossible. It has a carefully curated selection of books, with all the classic SF and Fantasy authors but with an idea to focus on Women, POC and Queer authors

Me recibió Sam su dueño, originario de Portland y amante de la ciencia ficción y la poesía. Le pregunté si hay poesía en ciencia y ficción y me mostró uno de los libros escrito por Andrew Joron, un poeta y traductor del área de la Bahía en San Francisco.

Sam me contó que Parallel Worlds abrió sus puertas en 2022, al principio con muy pocos libros, algo que viéndolo hoy parece imposible. Tiene una cuidada selección de libros, que incluye a los autores clásicos de ciencia ficción y fantasía pero con el foco puesto en autoras mujeres, queer y en personas que no se perciben blancas.

Sam also listens to his customers’ requests and horror books are in high demand. For that reason Paralell Worlds has a special section for them.

When I told him I was Argentinean, he showed me books translated into English of «Our share of the night» (Nuestra parte de la noche) and «Tender is the flesh» (Cadáver exquisito) by Mariana Enriquez https://www.instagram.com/marianaenriquez1973/ and Agustina Bazterrica https://www.instagram.com/agustinabazterrica/ respectively. Both from Argentina. Curiously, he had copies of these books in Spanish as well.

Sam además escucha los pedidos de sus clientes y los libros de terror son bastante solicitados. Por ese motivo Parallel Worlds cuenta con una sección especial para ellos.

Al comentarle que era Argentina me mostró libros traducidos al inglés de «Nuestra parte de la noche» (Our share of the night) y «Cadáver exquisito» (Tender is the flesh) de Mariana Enriquez https://www.instagram.com/marianaenriquez1973/y Agustina Bazterrica https://www.instagram.com/agustinabazterrica/ respectivamente. Curiosamente también contaba con los ejemplares en español.

I asked Sam about Parallel Worlds activities and that was his answer.

Le pregunté a Sam acerca de las actividades que se desarrollan en Parallel Worlds y esta fue su respuesta.

«Parallel Worlds has two bookclubs: OG BookClub and Romantasy Bookclub that take place at the upstairs Dreamhouse Bar on 412 NE Beech St. The OG Bookclub was started over a year ago and chooses diverse SF/F that are challenging. They meet on the first Thursday of the month.

The Romantasy Bookclub picks a spicy fantasy books that have Queer or Female protaganist and meet on the 3rd Thursday. We have also hosted a reading party, where a DJ plays ambient music and everyone gets together to read for 90 minutes then socializes and chats about what they are reading»

«Parallel Worlds tiene dos clubes de lectura: OG BookClub y Romantasy Bookclub que tienen lugar en el Dreamhouse Bar en 412 NE Beech St. El OG Bookclub comenzó hace más de un año y elige diversos libros de ciencia ficción y fantasía que son desafiantes. Se reúnen el primer jueves de cada mes.

El Romantasy Bookclub elige una fantasía picante libros que tienen protagonistas Queer o femeninas y se reúnen el tercer jueves de cada mes. También hemos organizado una fiesta de lectura, en la que un DJ pone música ambiental y la gente se reúne para leer durante 90 minutos y luego socializar y charlar sobre lo que han leído»

I am not a science fiction reader but but being surrounded by these atmosphere I felt that I needed to read something, so I asked Sam for a book recommendation. He picked “I who have never known men” written by Jacqueline Harpman, a Belgium writer. Maybe I become a science fiction fan 😉

No soy lectora de ciencia ficción pero al estar rodeada de esa temática sentí que necesitaba leer algo, entonces le pedí a Sam que me recomendara un libro. Eligió “I who have never known men” (Yo nunca supe de los hombres) escrito por la autora belga Jacqueline Harpman. Quizás me transforme en una fan de la ciencia ficción 😉
