3129 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, Oregon

I visited this bookstore in August and when I arrived I found a small wooden house painted blue with yellow windows where it is possible to see some of the recommended books and many wild flowers around it. A little forest house in the middle of the city.

As I walked in, I was welcomed by a woody aroma characteristic of PNW buildings and a space where books were arranged in shelves and aisles leading to small rooms, each filled with more books sorted into different categories.

Amanda Doimas, owner of Backstory Books, explained to me that the house was built in 1959 with the intention of being a dental office, which explains its curious configuration.

The interesting fact is that it has always operated as a bookstore: Hawthorne Boulevard Books.

This is the story of Backstory Books:

«Backstory started in the Foster-Powell neighborhood in Portland. I am the controlling owner, but the shop is really an amalgam of its readers, supporters, crafters, and friends. I use the term “we” as the point of view of the shop, because it is made of so many of us».

«Taking a few tentative steps in late 2014, Backstory opened in a weird little building at the Carts on Foster food cart pod. In October of 2015, we moved to 6010 SE Foster. Here, we had art shows, poetry readings, a few classes, and craft nights».

«In the summer of 2018, we were able to make a synergistic move to the previous home of Hawthorne Boulevard Books. The owner of that shop remained in her home, becoming our new landlady, in a mutually beneficial relationship».

One of the things that caught my attention about Backstory was that from their name they advertise books and yarns. Amanda tells me that reading and knitting are her favorite activities so she thought it was interesting to combine both passions in one place and many of her customers thank her for it.

You can find a wide selection of yarns and wools, including some Danish varieties that are not so readily available in Portland. There are also needles, books, and all the elements necessary for knitting and embroidery.

I asked Amanda about the curation of the books and whether there are particular subjects and she told me that she started with books of all kinds of literary genres by African-American authors.

Other subjects of her interest were nautical books and books on textiles and crafts.

It is also possible to find a variety of collectible illustrated books and many by women authors.

I bought these two 🙂

Backstory Books & Yarn has new and used books and it is also possible to take books we have already read to trade.

I am very grateful to Amanda for her time to tell me the story of her bookstore among customers and enthusiastic people who, like me, decided to visit it.
Let’s support independent bookstores and businesses.
