The Old Bookstore in Iceland (Verslunin Bræðurnir Eyjólfsson)

Flateyri and Reykjavik, Iceland

Some months ago I started to be interested in independent bookstores and for that reason I started to visit them to know a little more about their history and the books that can be found.

While I was preparing my trip to Iceland and Greenland I thought it would be interesting to find out about owner-operated bookstores in that part of the world. During the search I came across The Old Bookstore in Iceland (Gamla Bókabúðin) https://www.instagram.com/the.old.bookstore.in.iceland/and the kindness of Eythor who answered my mails very kindly and quickly.

Desde hace unos meses comencé a interesarme por las librerías independientes y por ese motivo comencé a visitarlas para saber un poco más sobre su historia y de los libros que es posible encontrar.

Mientras preparaba el viaje hacia Islandia y Groenlandia pensé que sería interesante conocer librerías que fuesen atendidas por sus dueños en esa parte del mundo. Durante la búsqueda me encontré con The Old Bookstore in Iceland (Gamla Bókabúðin) https://www.instagram.com/the.old.bookstore.in.iceland/ y la amabilidad de Eythor quien contestó mis mails con mucha amabilidad y rapidez.

This bookstore was founded by Eythor’s great-grandfather Jón together with his brothers Jens and Kristján in Flateyri, a town located in the northwestern part of the island about 400 kilometers from Reykjavik.

Esta librería fue fundada por Jón, el bisabuelo de Eythor junto a sus hermanos Jens y Kristján en Flateyri, una ciudad ubicada en la zona noroeste de la isla a unos 400 kilómetros de Reykjavik.

Eythor is the fourth generation of booksellers in this family business that started out trading used books along with other everyday items in the region.

A fact that caught my attention is that twenty years ago they started selling books by weight 🙂

Eythor es la cuarta generación de libreros de esta empresa familiar que comenzó comercializando libros usados junto con otros artículos de uso cotidiano en la región.

Un dato que me llamó la atención es que hace veinte años comenzaron a comercializar libros por peso 🙂

I was lucky to visit the store that opened in November 2023 in Reykjavik where I spoke with Svanhildur. Unfortunately due to the distance I was not able to go to the original location; however Eythor told me about the history of this bookstore by email.

Tuve la suerte de poder conocer el local que abrieron en noviembre del 2023 en Reykjavik donde conversé con Svanhildur. Lamentablemente por la distancia no pude visitar la locación original; sin embargo Eythor me comentó sobre la historia de esta librería por email.

«In our stores, in addition to selling Icelandic books in English and other languages, we also sell a variety of high quality products from Iceland and around the world. All of them are manufactured by companies that are a hundred or more years old. We have a large selection of high quality fountain pens, ink, notebooks and office supplies – for most products, we are the only store in Iceland selling these types of products and in the face of high demand we felt we should open another store in Reykjavik, as our original store in Flateyri is very remote, probably one of the most remote bookstores in the world! This is the oldest original store in Iceland.»

Tenemos una gran selección de plumas estilográficas, tinta, cuadernos y material de oficina de alta calidad. ¡Para la mayoría de los productos, somos la única tienda en Islandia que vende este tipo de productos y frente a la gran demanda sentimos que debíamos abrir otra tienda en Reykjavik, ya que nuestra tienda original en Flateyri es muy remota, probablemente una de las librerías más remotas del mundo! Esta es la tienda original más antigua de Islandia”.
