Llegué a Estambul con muchas expectativas y una gran ilusión. Era una de esas ciudades que soñaba conocer: la mítica Constantinopla, tantas veces mencionada en los libros de historia como la joya del mundo antiguo.

Por otro lado, a cada persona a la que le conté sobre este viaje me hablaba con entusiasmo sobre su experiencia, lo que aumentó aún más mis ganas de visitarla.

I arrived in Istanbul with great expectations and a great illusion. It was one of those cities I dreamed of visiting: the mythical Constantinople, so often mentioned in history books as the jewel of the ancient world.

On the other hand, every person I told about this trip enthusiastically talked to me about their experience, which made me even more excited to visit.

Estambul es una de las ciudades más visitadas del mundo, algo evidente al recorrer sus calles llenas de turistas. Creo que algo que le da mayor encanto es su ubicación geográfica única: una ciudad dividida entre Europa y Asia, unida y separada al mismo tiempo por el estrecho del Bósforo.

La expresión «la primera impresión es la que cuenta» resultó muy acertada al llegar a Estambul. Su aeropuerto no sólo es moderno, amplio y limpio, sino también muy eficiente para realizar los trámites de ingreso al país, más allá de todos los controles con los que cuentan.

En la zona de vuelos nacionales, descubrí una biblioteca abierta a todos los pasajeros, con un amplio horario de atención. Si estás asociado a una biblioteca en Turquía, incluso es posible retirar libros para disfrutar durante tus vuelos. Me pareció una idea fantástica.

Istanbul is one of the most visited cities in the world, something evident when walking through its streets full of tourists. I think that something that gives it more charm is its unique geographical location: a city divided between Europe and Asia, united and separated at the same time by the Bosphorus Strait.

The expression “it’s the first impression that counts” proved to be very accurate when arriving in Istanbul. Its airport is not only modern, spacious and clean, but also very efficient for the entry into the country beyond all the controls they have in place.

In the domestic flight area, I discovered a library open to all passengers, with extended opening hours. If you are associated with a library in Turkey, it is even possible to check out books to enjoy during your flights. I thought this was a fantastic idea.

El interés que tuve durante todo el año por las librerías independientes también me acompañó en esta ciudad, donde me sorprendió gratamente encontrar una gran cantidad de estos espacios, y además traducciones al turco de Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar y Eduardo Galeano, entre otros.

The interest I had throughout the year for independent bookstores also accompanied me in this city, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a large number of these spaces, and also Turkish translations of Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar and Eduardo Galeano, among others.

Cuando le mencioné a Baha, amigo y compañero en este viaje, acerca de mi interés por los libros y librerías, me contó que cuando era un niño su tío Reşat Karakuyu, que había sido escritor, lo llevaba a recorrer las librerías de usados en Sahaflar Çarşısı. Así que una tarde de domingo, nos dirigimos hacia allí, cuando no todos los puestos estaban abiertos, lo cual hacía el ambiente aún más especial.

When I mentioned to Baha, a friend and companion on this trip, about my interest in books and bookstores, he told me that when he was a boy his uncle Reşat Karakuyu, who had been a writer, used to take him to browse the used bookstores in Sahaflar Çarşısı. So one Sunday afternoon, we headed there, when not all the stalls were open, which made the atmosphere even more special.

Su tienda es un negocio familiar con casi cien años de historia, y me contó con orgullo lo significativo que es para él continuar con este legado. Desde pequeño había soñado con seguir al frente del negocio, y ser librero, según sus palabras, es mucho más que un trabajo: es una verdadera pasión que atraviesa culturas.

It was then that I met Sezar https://www.instagram.com/amazonsahaf/, a bookseller with whom I was lucky enough to talk for a while. His store is a family business with almost a hundred years of history, and he proudly told me how meaningful it is for him to continue with this legacy. Ever since he was a child he had dreamed of continuing to run the business, and being a bookseller, in his words, is much more than a job: it is a true passion that crosses cultures.

En mi recorrido por librerías independientes, una de las más recomendadas fue Homer Kitabevi https://www.instagram.com/homerkitabevi/, situada en una casa de bella fachada, con una puerta y ventanas de vidrio que invitan a entrar. Especializada en libros de historia y arqueología, Homer ofrece obras de autores tanto locales como internacionales. Además, cuenta con una selección de literatura infantil, fotografía, filosofía y novelas, incluidas las de Annie Ernaux, que despiertan tanto interés en estos días, además de citas a ciegas con libros, un detalle agradable para quienes buscan sorprenderse con las lecturas seleccionadas por ellos.

Sentada sobre unos libros infantiles estaba Helena una gatita que un día llegó a Homer y decidió convertirse en librera 😻

In my tour of independent bookstores, one of the most highly recommended was Homer Kitabevi https://www.instagram.com/homerkitabevi/, located in a beautifully decorated house with a glass door and windows that invite you to enter. Specializing in history and archaeology books, Homer offers works by both local and international authors. It also has a selection of children’s literature, photography, philosophy and novels, including those by Annie Ernaux, which arouse so much interest these days, as well as blind dates with books, a nice touch for those looking to be surprised by the readings selected by them.

Sitting on top of some children’s books was Helena a kitten who one day came to Homer and decided to become a bookseller 😻.

Otra librería destacada fue Robinson Crusoe 389 https://www.instagram.com/robinsoncrusoe389/, un espacio de estilo moderno dentro del Salt Galata. La librería cuenta con amplias salas, donde muchos de los libros de arte y arquitectura están dispuestos de frente, lo que facilita que los visitantes puedan hojearlos y mesas para poder desplegarlos.

Un pasillo conduce a una sala de conferencias y presentaciones de libros. El mismo está decorado con retratos de escritores y artistas de todo el mundo, como Pessoa, Füruzan, Frida Khalo, Hemingway, Bioy Casares, e incluso el músico Astor Piazzolla. Muchas de esas fotos fueron tomadas por fotógrafos como Ida Kar, Ara Güler, Martin Hesse entre otros. Mientras que la pared opuesta tiene enormes estanterías con una variada selección de libros de ficción.

Robinson Crusoe 389 es un espacio de gran belleza y encanto que merece ser visitado si estás en la ciudad.

Another outstanding bookstore was Robinson Crusoe 389 https://www.instagram.com/robinsoncrusoe389/, a modern style space inside the Salt Galata. The bookstore has spacious rooms, where many of the art and architecture books are arranged facing the front, making it easy for visitors to browse through them, and tables to display them.

A hallway leads to a room for conferences and book presentations. It is decorated with portraits of writers and artists from all over the world, such as Pessoa, Füruzan, Frida Khalo, Hemingway, Bioy Casares, and even the musician Astor Piazzolla. Many of these photos were taken by photographers such as Ida Kar, Ara Güler, Martin Hesse and others. While the opposite wall has huge bookshelves with a varied selection of fiction books.

Robinson Crusoe 389 is a space of great beauty and charm that deserves to be visited if you are in the city.

Durante un tour gastronómico por Kadıköy, en el lado asiático de Estambul, pasé por Moda Kitabevi, una galería que alberga numerosas tiendas de libros usados. Este lugar tiene un encanto único, lleno de pequeñas tiendas especializadas en géneros variados, desde literatura y arte hasta libros de historia y filosofía. Aunque no pude detenerme a explorar cada rincón, tomé un breve video que apenas alcanza a capturar la atmósfera de este espacio literario.

During a food tour of Kadıköy, on the Asian side of Istanbul, I walked by Moda Kitabevi, a gallery that houses numerous used book stores. This place has a unique charm, filled with small stores specializing in varied genres, from literature and art to history and philosophy books. Although I couldn’t stop to explore every nook and corner, I took a brief video that barely manages to capture the atmosphere of this literary space.
