Llegué a MalaTesta https://www.instagram.com/malatesta_libros/ el lunes 30 de diciembre al borde del cierre del 2024. No recuerdo haber visitado Parque Chas, aunque sabía que es un barrio famoso donde es fácil perderse.

De hecho, las indicaciones de Google Maps fueron poco claras confirmando que el encanto del lugar está en que te pierdas en el laberinto que forman sus calles, muchas de ellas con nombres de ciudades europeas.

I arrived at MalaTesta https://www.instagram.com/malatesta_libros/ on Monday, December 30, on the verge of closing 2024. I don’t remember having visited Parque Chas, although I knew it is a famous neighborhood where it is easy to get lost.

In fact, the Google Maps directions were unclear confirming that the charm of the place is in getting lost in the labyrinth formed by its streets, many of them named after European cities.

MalaTesta, está ubicada en Gándara 2994 entre Andonaegui y el Pasaje Copenhagen. Al ingresar encontré a Carime Morales, su dueña, conversando con un joven sobre libros y lecturas y supuse que era un habitué del lugar. Aproveché ese momento para recorrer y observar la librería antes de presentarme.

MalaTesta is located at 2994 Gandara Street between Andonaegui and Pasaje Copenhagen. When I entered I found Carime Morales, the owner, talking with a young man about books and readings and I assumed that he was a regular of the place. I took advantage of that moment to walk around and take a look at the bookstore before introducing myself.

La librería tiene espacios bien definidos: una zona dedicada a escritores locales, entre los que destacan los de Inés Fernández Moreno, vecina del barrio y que lamentablemente falleció el año pasado.

En otras estanterías y mesas encontré  libros de narrativa, poesía, actualidad y también libros infantiles.

The bookstore has well-defined spaces: an area dedicated to local writers, including those of Inés Fernández Moreno, a neighbor who sadly passed away last year.

On other shelves and tables I found narrative books, poetry, contemporary books and also children’s books.

Cuando me presenté, Carime preparó unos mates y, en la tranquilidad de esa tarde soleada de fin de año, compartió conmigo la historia del lugar. Me contó que con Juan Lescano, su pareja, abrieron la librería en 2021, en plena pandemia. El interés por los libros siempre había estado ya que Carime estudió Letras y Edición y más allá de que estábamos viviendo un momento extraño decidieron dar el gran paso y abrir la librería.

Y fue así que nació MalaTesta cuyo nombre proviene del personaje Paolo Malatesta del Canto V de La Divina Comedia de Dante Alighieri.

When I introduced myself, Carime prepared some mates and, in the quietness of that sunny afternoon at the end of the year, she shared with me the history of the place. She told me that with Juan Lescano, her partner, they opened the bookstore in 2021, in the middle of the pandemic. They had always been interested in books, since Carime studied Literature and Publishing, and even though we were going through a strange time, they decided to take the big step and open the bookstore.

And so MalaTesta was born, named after the character Paolo Malatesta from Canto V of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy.

Cuando MalaTesta abrió sus puertas los vecinos recibieron la noticia con mucha alegría y se involucraron en el proyecto. Incluso un amigo diseñó el logo. – «Por eso siento que la librería es de los vecinos» dice Carime con una sonrisa.

When MalaTesta opened its doors, the neighbors received the news with great joy and got involved in the project. A friend even designed the logo. – “That’s why I feel that the bookstore belongs to the neighbors” says Carime with a smile.

Gran parte del catálogo está compuesto por libros de editoriales independientes; la idea es acercar a los lectores, autores que no son tan conocidos.

También es posible encontrar libretas, fanzines, tarjetas y hasta sus propios stickers.

A large part of the catalog is made up of books from independent publishers; the idea is to bring readers closer to authors who are not so well known.

It is also possible to find notebooks, fanzines, cards and even their own stickers.

MalaTesta es además un espacio de encuentro donde se realizan talleres, ciclos de cine y diferentes actividades culturales.

Sus paredes están adornadas con pinturas de artistas del barrio y Carime me contó que el año pasado participaron del proyecto SACH https://www.instagram.com/sach_estudios/ una propuesta de estudios abiertos en los barrios de Chacarita, Villa Ortúzar y Parque Chas donde invitaron a artistas a participar con una muestra colectiva de cuadernos de artistas.

MalaTesta is also a meeting place where workshops, film shows and different cultural activities take place.

Its walls are adorned with paintings by artists from the neighborhood and Carime told me that last year they participated in the SACH project https://www.instagram.com/sach_estudios/ a proposal of open studios in the neighborhoods of Chacarita, Villa Ortúzar and Parque Chas where they invited artists to participate with a collective exhibition of artists’ notebooks.

MaltaTesta ofrece talleres de cuentos, poesía y dramaturgia. Es un espacio para llegar, mirar libros, pedir recomendaciones y dejarse llevar por la magia del espacio y del barrio. Le agradezco la atención a Carime.
