In February 2024, Autumn Leaf Books https://www.instagram.com/autumnleafbookstore/ opened its doors on 334 NE 4th Avenue, and little by little it has become part of the community, thanks to the events hosted by Eden, its owner.

Autumn Leaf Books https://www.instagram.com/autumnleafbookstore/ , ubicada en 334 NE 4th Avenue, abrió sus puertas en febrero del 2024 y poco a poco se ha convertido en parte de la comunidad gracias a los eventos organizados por Eden, su dueña.

I love independent bookstores, and this one has a particular charm because it is part of the community where I live. I stopped by to chat with Eden and ask her a few questions to learn more about her project. I am very grateful for her time and enthusiasm.

Me encantan las librerías independientes, y esta tiene un encanto particular porque forma parte de la comunidad donde vivo. Pasé por allí para charlar con Eden y hacerle algunas preguntas para saber más sobre su proyecto. Estoy muy agradecida por su tiempo y entusiasmo.

When and how did the idea of opening Autumn Leaf in Camas come up?

«I’ve wanted to open a bookstore ever since I saw the movie ‘You’ve Got Mail’ decades ago. I instantly knew that was something I wanted to do. It wasn’t something I intended on doing until I retired, however life circumstances made me stop and re-think my timing. It was the best decision. We opened February 2nd, 2024».

¿Cuándo y cómo surgió la idea de abrir Autumn Leaf en Camas?

«Quise abrir una librería desde que vi la película «Tienes un email» hace décadas. Supe al instante que era algo que quería hacer. No era algo que pensara hacer hasta que me jubilara, pero las circunstancias de la vida me hicieron parar y replantearme el momento. Fue la mejor decisión. Abrimos el 2 de febrero de 2024″.

How do you curate the books? Do you have special themes?

«I curate the books in a myriad of ways. Goodreads suggestions, customer suggestions, my own personal favorites, blogs, etc. No special themes, it’s a general bookstore for both adults and kids».

¿Cómo es la selección de libros? ¿Tienen temas especiales?

«Selecciono los libros de muchas maneras. Sugerencias de Goodreads, de los clientes, mis favoritos, blogs, etc. No hay temas especiales, es una librería general para adultos y niños».

Could you tell more about the book club in association with Lane Cellars? And how or who picks the readings?

«Once a month we have a book club at Lane Cellars https://www.instagram.com/lane_cellars/. Generally, I will post about an upcoming book club one month prior on social media and ask people if they want to join and to please vote on one out of six books I’ve chosen. Sometimes I’ll just pick a book and ask if anyone would like to join. It’s a wonderful mix of people with a span of age ranges. 20s-70!»

¿Podrías contarnos algo más sobre el club de lectura asociado con Lane Cellars? Y cómo se eligen las lecturas?

«Una vez al mes tenemos un club de lectura en Lane Cellars https://www.instagram.com/lane_cellars/. Por lo general, un mes antes publico en redes sociales un anuncio sobre el próximo club de lectura y pregunto a los asistentes si quieren unirse y votar uno de los seis libros que elegí. A veces elijo un libro y pregunto si alguien quiere unirse. Es una mezcla maravillosa de gente de todas las edades. ¡De los 20 a los70!«

The bookstore has a space for kids, are you doing activities as well? Are you planning more activities?

«Our kids activities include story times on Wednesdays at 10:30 am and we just started a First Friday story time as well».

«Depending on foot traffic downtown we will add special activities throughout the month. This month we will have local authors signing their books, two vendor pop-ups, the Easter Bunny (!!!), and a special day just for bookstores-«Independent Bookstore Day» which celebrates all local indie bookstores on April 26th. We’ll have giveaways and fun new items in the store».

La librería tiene un espacio para niños, ¿realizas actividades para ellos? ¿Tenés previstas otro tipo de actividades?

«Nuestras actividades infantiles incluyen cuentacuentos los miércoles a las 10.30 a.m. y también acabamos de empezar un cuentacuentos los primeros viernes de cada mes«.

«Dependiendo de la cantidad de público, añadiremos actividades especiales. Este mes tendremos autores locales firmando sus libros, dos pop-ups de vendedores, el (¡¡¡ El Conejo de Pascua (!!!), y un día especial sólo para librerías – «Día de la Librería Independiente», que celebrarán todas las librerías independientes locales el 26 de abril. Habrá regalos y nuevos artículos divertidos en la tienda».
