The oldest esoteric bookstore in LondonLa librería esotérica más antigua de Londres

The bookstore has attracted legendary visitors, including W.B. Yeats, Aleister Crowley, and even the young Carl Jung—figures who contributed to its rich esoteric legacy.

Watkins spans two floors filled with new, rare, and second-hand books specializing in Western esotericism, Eastern philosophy, astrology, alchemy, shamanism, yoga, meditation, Christian mysticism, alternative healing, comparative religion, self-help, and psychology

The bookstore also offers a wide variety of tarot and oracle decks—from classic Rider–Waite–Smith sets to rare editions—as well as crystals, gemstones, ritual jewelry, amulets, incense from different traditions, statues, Tibetan singing bowls, and healing tools. Additionally, they provide in-store tarot and astrology readings

In the 1980s, the store expanded by adding a basement level, creating extra space for esoteric objects

Watkins publishes Mind Body Spirit magazine, with Etan Ilfeld as its Editor-in-Chief. Ilfeld is also the owner of Watkins Books and a driving force behind the store’s continued innovation and cultural relevance. A multidisciplinary creative and entrepreneur, he has helped expand Watkins’ influence through thoughtful curation, community engagement, and a dynamic events program. The store organizes a wide range of activities—including talks, workshops, book launches, art exhibitions, and webinars—covering topics such as tarot, magic, holistic healing, and rituals. Their book club, available both online and in-store, connects thousands of spiritually minded readers around the world.

Every spring, the bookstore releases its annual list of the “100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People”, positioning itself as a global leader in spiritual discourse.

In May, I had the opportunity to visit the bookstore, and it was a truly fascinating experience. The place was full of people browsing its aisles, and I took the chance to explore the shelves, packed with books that are hard to find elsewhere and immediately sparked my curiosity. Despite the vast amount of material, everything is thoughtfully organized and beautifully displayed, making it easy to navigate. On top of that, the knowledge and kindness of the staff made the visit even more enriching.

Many thanks for taking the time to speak with me and for all the valuable information.

Let’s continue to support independent bookstores.

Una respuesta a “Watkins Books (Cecil Court, London)”

  1. Gracias Laura. Extremadamente interesante.
