Hay lugares que parecen mágicos, y Livraria Lello https://www.instagram.com/livraria.lello/, ubicada en el barrio Clérigos en Porto, es sin lugar a dudas uno de ellos. Cuando les comenté a algunos amigos que viajaría a esta ciudad y que saben de mi amor por las librerías, me dijeron que esta era una parada obligada. ¡Y cuánta razón tenían!

Algo que me sorprendió fue que para ingresar es necesario reservar día y horario con anticipación y además abonar una entrada que luego se descuenta si uno compra un libro.

Cuenta la leyenda que J.K. Rowling se inspiró en este lugar para crear Hogwarts, el colegio de Harry Potter y la razón por la que Livraria Lello sea tan popular. Sin embargo, parece ser que ella lo negó, pero quizás la fantasía y la magia supera cualquier desmentida.

There are places that seem magical, and Livraria Lello https://www.instagram.com/livraria.lello/, located in the Clérigos neighborhood in Porto, is undoubtedly one of them. When I told some friends, who know about my love for bookstores, that I would be visiting the city, they said this was a must-see stop. And they were absolutely right!

One thing that surprised me was that you need to book a date and time in advance to enter, and also pay an admission fee, which is later deducted if you purchase a book.

Legend has it that J.K. Rowling was inspired by this place to create Hogwarts, the school in Harry Potter, and that’s why Livraria Lello has become so popular. However, it seems she has denied it — but perhaps fantasy and magic outweigh any denial.

Más allá de la multitud que llega cada día para conocerla, Lello merece ser visitada. Su fachada neogótica anticipa que estamos frente a un edificio muy particular. Al entrar, quedé maravillada por la escalera de madera tallada, con escalones rojos y pasamanos curvos que le dan un aire señorial y que está ubicada en el centro del salón.

El techo trabajado en madera, y las paredes con estanterías repletas de libros antiguos y contemporáneos, puertas de vidrios repartidos y lámparas antiguas junto con posters de la revista Times crean una atmósfera única.

Beyond the crowds that gather each day to see it, Lello is absolutely worth a visit. Its neo-Gothic façade already hints that this is no ordinary building. Upon entering, I was amazed by the grand staircase at the center of the main hall—carved wood, deep red steps, and gracefully curved handrails give it a majestic air.

The wood-paneled ceiling, the walls lined with shelves filled with both antique and contemporary books, the glass-paneled doors, and vintage lamps and Times magazine posters all create a truly unique atmosphere.

Al subir al primer piso, lo que captó mi atención es el imponente vitral (diseñado por Samuel Van Krieken) que cubre una gran parte del techo y que contiene la frase en latín Decus in Labore («Dignidad en el trabajo») y cuyo símbolo es el logo de la librería.

When I climbed to the first floor, what immediately caught my attention was the impressive stained-glass skylight (designed by Samuel Van Krieken), which covers much of the ceiling. It features the Latin phrase Decus in Labore (“Dignity in Work”) and includes the bookstore’s emblem as its central symbol.

No es fácil caminar entre tanta gente, pero siempre hay algún rincón donde uno puede refugiarse para hojear libros con tranquilidad. Disfruté de encontrar un ejemplar de Mafalda traducido al portugués, y también con obras de Cortázar. Siempre es una alegría ver autores argentinos traducidos en otros idiomas.

Además, pude explorar la colección de pequeños libros que la librería edita en portugués e inglés: ediciones cuidadas de clásicos. Me enamoré de los de antología poética de Fernando Pessoa como no podía ser de otra manera.

It’s not easy to make your way through the crowd, but there’s always a quiet corner where you can retreat and browse books in peace. I was delighted to find a Portuguese edition of Mafalda, as well as works by Cortázar. It’s always a joy to see Argentinian authors translated into other languages.

I also had the chance to explore the collection of small books published by the bookstore itself, in both Portuguese and English—beautifully crafted editions of literary classics. I fell in love with the poetry anthologies by Fernando Pessoa, as it could not be otherwise.

La Livraria Lello fue inaugurada el 13 de enero de 1906, en un edificio diseñado por el ingeniero Francisco Xavier Esteves para los hermanos José y António Lello, grandes impulsores de la vida cultural de Porto. El local ya había sido antes una librería: la Livraria Internacional de Ernesto Chardron, cuyo nombre aún se puede ver en la fachada.

Livraria Lello was inaugurated on January 13, 1906, in a building designed by engineer Francisco Xavier Esteves for brothers José and António Lello, important figures in Porto’s cultural scene. The space had previously been home to another bookstore—Livraria Internacional de Ernesto Chardron, whose name can still be seen on the façade.
