Conocí a Mariana https://www.instagram.com/marianetcheto/ primero a través de su obra, los hermosos libros de cuentos Un día de verano y Un día de invierno de Editorial Quipu https://www.instagram.com/quipulibros/) en la librería Letras y Corcheas https://www.instagram.com/letrasycorcheas/. Las historias y los dibujos me atraparon de inmediato, y Patricia Vila, la dueña de la librería, me animó a contactarla: «Tenés que conocerla», me dijo.

Así fue como, en un día de diciembre nos encontramos virtualmente. Aunque la charla fue a través de la cámara, se generó algo tan amoroso que sentí como que ya nos habíamos conocido. 

I first discovered Mariana https://www.instagram.com/marianetcheto/ through her work, the beautiful storybooks Un día de verano and Un día de invierno published by Editorial Quipu https://www.instagram.com/quipulibros/), which I found at the bookstore Letras y Corcheas https://www.instagram.com/letrasycorcheas/. Her stories and illustrations captivated me from the very first page. It was Patricia Vila, the bookstore owner, who gave me the final push to reach out to her: “You have to meet her,” she told me with excitement.

And so, one December day, we met for the first time—through a screen. Even though the conversation was virtual, there was such warmth that it felt as if we had already known each other.

Mariana tiene una historia que me conmovió. De esas que parecen salidas de los libros infantiles que tanto me gustan, donde hay un momento de revelación, un “eureka” que marca un antes y un después. Descubrir la vocación, ese lugar donde se cruzan la emoción, el deseo y la creatividad, puede cambiarte la vida. Y eso le pasó a ella.

Mariana has a story that moved me. One of those tales that feels like it belongs in the kind of children’s books I love—where a moment of revelation, a «eureka,» marks a clear before and after. Discovering your calling—that point where emotion, desire, and creativity intersect—can change your life. And that’s exactly what happened to her.

LzT: ¿Por qué elegiste la ilustración infantil?

MEM: El dibujo y la pintura siempre estuvieron presentes. Es lo que hacemos cuando somos chicos: dibujamos y pintamos. Además, mi mamá era artista, pintora de cuadros, así que en mi casa siempre hubo colores, pasteles y olor a óleo. Pero no fue hasta 2011 que tuve una especie de epifanía. Fue por casualidad, y de repente pensé: “¡Ilustración!”. Me di cuenta de que alguien escribía y dibujaba los libros que yo les leía a mis hijos, algo que jamás se me había ocurrido hasta ese momento. Desde entonces, me dedico a esto full time. Es lo que más disfruto: dibujar y crear historias.

LzT: Why did you choose children’s illustration?

MEM: Drawing and painting were always around me. It’s what we all do as children—draw and paint. Plus, my mom was an artist, a painter, so our house was always filled with colors, pastels, and the smell of oil paint. But it wasn’t until 2011 that I had what I’d call an epiphany. It happened by chance, and suddenly I thought: “Illustration!” I realized someone had written and drawn the books I read to my kids—something that had never occurred to me before. Since then, I’ve been doing this full-time. It’s what I love most: drawing and creating stories.

LzT: ¿Con quién te formaste?

MEM: Mi gran maestra fue Mónica Weiss https://www.instagram.com/monicaweissss/. Aprendí muchísimo con ella. Fue en su taller donde le di forma y nació mi primer libro como autora integral: «Mi mamá aprendió a tejer» publicado por Editorial Del Naranjo. Después seguí formándome con cursos, talleres, workshops y masterclasses con distintos profesionales.

Siempre estoy buscando herramientas, tanto para ilustrar como para escribir. También hice talleres literarios porque me interesa mucho la escritura, que es una parte fundamental y complementaria del trabajo con las imágenes.

LzT: Who did you learn with?

MEM: My greatest teacher was Mónica Weiss https://www.instagram.com/monicaweissss/. I learned a lot from her. It was in her workshop that I shaped and created my first book as both author and illustrator: «Mi mamá aprendió a tejer», published by Editorial Del Naranjo. After that, I kept learning—taking courses, workshops, masterclasses with different professionals.

I’m always searching for new tools, both in illustration and writing. I’ve also taken literary workshops because writing interests me deeply and goes hand in hand with illustration.

LzT: ¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo?

LzT: How is your creative process?

MEM Cambia con cada libro. Algunos nacen a partir de un dibujo, otros de una frase que escuché o de una imagen. Pero lo que sí me propongo es estar atenta al mundo que me rodea. Las frases, los libros, las películas… todo me nutre y así aparecen temas y cosas que quiero contar.

MEM: It changes with each book. Some start from a drawing, others from a phrase I heard or an image. But I always try to stay open and attentive to the world around me. Phrases, books, movies—everything inspires me. That’s where the themes and stories I want to tell come from.

LzT: ¿Con qué materiales trabajás?

MEM: Tengo muchos, pero los que más uso son acuarelas, lápices de colores, fibras y crayones. A veces los uso por separado, otras los combino. Me gusta experimentar.

LzT: What materials do you work with?

MEM: I have many, but my favorites are watercolors, colored pencils, markers, and crayons. Sometimes I use them separately, other times I mix them. I enjoy experimenting.

LzT: ¿Tenés algo escrito o publicado que no sea del género infantil? Te imaginarás por qué te lo pregunto 😉

MEM: ¡Sí! Justamente me sorprendió encontrarte en la Maratón Epistolar https://www.instagram.com/letras.sin.filo/ que organizaron Agustina Caride y Soledad Vignolo. Las propuestas me parecieron súper interesantes. Así que si, escribo ficción para adultos, aunque aún no publiqué nada en ese género. Por ahora, me enfoco en el público infantil, pero tengo varias cosas guardadas que quizás algún día vean la luz.

LzT: Have you written or published anything outside the children’s genre? You can probably guess why I’m asking you this 😉

MEM: Yes! I was surprised to run into you at the Maratón Espistolar https://www.instagram.com/letras.sin.filo/organized by Agustina Caride and Soledad Vignolo. The prompts were amazing. And yes, I also write fiction for adults, although I haven’t published anything yet. For now, I focus on children’s literature, but I do have a few pieces waiting for the right moment.

LzT: Contanos sobre la experiencia en Bologna.

MEM: ¡Fue increíble! Tuve la suerte de asistir este año a la Bologna Children’s Book Fair, una de las ferias más importantes del mundo en literatura infantil, exclusiva para profesionales. Son cuatro días intensos de reuniones con editores, intercambio cultural, novedades editoriales. Volví llena de aprendizajes y con mucho para procesar.

LzT: Tell us about your experience in Bologna.

MEM: It was amazing! I was lucky to attend the Bologna Children’s Book Fair this year—one of the biggest and most important fairs in the world for children’s literature, exclusively for professionals. It’s four intense days of meetings with publishers, cultural exchange, and discovering the latest in children’s publishing. I came back full of ideas and things to reflect on.

LzT: También estuviste firmando libros en el stand de Quipu en la Feria del Libro de Buenos Aires.

MEM: Sí, fue otra experiencia hermosa, esta vez con el público. Ya empecé a trabajar en Un día de otoño, un nuevo libro que se suma a la serie. Paralelamente, tengo otros proyectos en marcha: uno en colaboración con otra autora que queremos presentar a una editorial, y también estoy haciendo un álbum de poesía ilustrada para niños,  también como autora integral. Siempre tengo ideas dando vueltas, tanto de ilustración como de escritura.

LzT: You also signed books at the Quipú booth at the Feria del Libro de Buenos Aires.

MEM: Yes, another beautiful experience—this time with the readers. I’ve already started working on Un día de otoño, a new book that continues the series. I’m also developing other projects: one in collaboration with another author that we plan to pitch to a publisher, and I’m currently creating an illustrated poetry album for children as both writer and illustrator. I’m always juggling ideas—some for illustration, others for stories.
