Bastaron unos minutos para que la energía y positividad de Pepa me atraparan por completo y por ese motivo quise que fuera parte de Amigas y Amigos Artistas y le agradezco que sin ningún divismo aceptara mi invitación.

Me enamoré de su lema de vida, una frase que su hermana le dijo hace muchos años y que ella grabó a fuego:
“Jamás te cierres ninguna puerta; que te la cierren los demás.”
Con esa premisa como guía, fue y sigue construyendo su camino.

This year I started a training course with Sol Aguirre https://www.instagram.com/lasclavesdesol/ , and it was on her podcast Las claves de sol, where she talks to inspiring people, that I learned about the story of Pepa González Ramos https://www.instagram.com/pepagart/

It only took a few minutes for Pepa’s energy and positivity to completely captivated me, which is why I wanted her to be part of Artistic Friends, and I am grateful that she accepted my invitation without any hesitation.

I fell in love with her motto in life, a quote her sister told her many years ago that she took to heart:
“Never close any doors yourself; let others close them for you.”
With that premise as her guide, she went on to build her path.

Pepa nació en Segovia, se formó en Derecho y más tarde en Comercio Exterior. En un viaje a San Francisco, hace lejos y hace tiempo, y a través de un amigo conoció a Adam Satir un americano con quien más tarde se casó y ha sido parte fundamental en su aventura de vivir entre España y Estados Unidos. 

En medio de tantos cambios, hubo algo que siempre permaneció: el arte. Desde chica, Pepa se sintió atraída por el dibujo y la pintura, y cada vez que se quedaba sin trabajo, aprovechaba ese tiempo para formarse, tomando cursos de pintura y dibujo.

Pepa was born in Segovia, studied law, and later foreign trade. On a trip to San Francisco, long ago, through a friend, she met Adam Satir, an American whom she later married and who has been a vital part of her adventure of living between Spain and the United States.

Amid all the changes, one thing remained constant: art. Since she was a child, Pepa was into drawing and painting, and every time she found herself without a job, she used that time to continue learning, taking painting and drawing courses

Trabajó en distintos sectores, pero su gran apuesta fue cuando decidió emprender en Estados Unidos con una empresa de importación de cerámica española. Todo empezó casi por casualidad: sus padres tienen un negocio de cerámica llamado La Casita del Segoviano y le mandaron a San Francisco un paquete con varias cosas y entre ellas unos platos de cerámica que cuando Pepa los vio pensó que podía intentar venderlos.

Así nació la idea. Empezó desde cero, con unas pocas piezas guardadas en su casa, buscando clientes, haciendo entregas personalmente. Paso a paso, con mucha dedicación y paciencia, fue construyendo su empresa hasta convertirla en un verdadero éxito.

She worked in different fields, but her big move came when she decided to start a business in the United States importing Spanish ceramics. It all started almost by chance: her parents have a ceramics business called La Casita del Segoviano, and they sent her a package to San Francisco with various contents, including some ceramic plates. When Pepa saw them, she thought she could try to sell them.

That’s how the idea was born. Pepa started from scratch, with a few pieces stored in her home, looking for customers, and making deliveries herself. Step by step, with a lot of dedication and patience, she built her company into a real success.

Por motivos familiares regresó a España y en una visita de sus suegros a Madrid, Peter Satir, su suegro, al ver los cuadros de Pepa la animó a tratar de vender su obra en una feria de artistas en Connecticut, en el Museo de la Ciudad. Ella sin dudarlo se presentó enviando muestras de su trabajo y fue aceptada para participar y aunque no vendió mucho esa primera experiencia, fue el comienzo de algo importante: por primera vez sintió que podía vender su arte.

For family reasons, she returned to Spain, and during a visit by her in-laws to Madrid, Peter Satir, her father-in-law, saw Pepa’s paintings and encouraged her to try to sell her work at an artists’ fair in Connecticut, at the City Museum. Without hesitation, she submitted samples of her work and was accepted to participate. Although she did not sell much during that first experience, it was the beginning of something important: for the first time, she felt that she could sell her art.

Durante la pandemia, con muchas horas de encierro, empezó a pintar cuadros en óleo de ciudades como Madrid, Segovia, Copenhague, Nueva York. Luego se le ocurrió que podía transformar esas obras en imanes para la nevera que resultaron un éxito.

Peter, su suegro, le comentó que en distintas zonas de Nueva York existen espacios habilitados donde los artistas pueden exponer y vender sus obras directamente al público. Pepa encontró uno cerca del MET y a pesar de los prejuicios culturales que le generaba la idea de “vender en la calle”, se animó y así nació su serie de imanes y láminas dedicadas a Nueva York.

After spending many hours in lockdown during the pandemic, he began painting oil paintings of cities such as Madrid, Segovia, Copenhagen, and New York City. Then he had the idea of turning these works into magnets for the refrigerator, which turned out to be a success.

Peter, her father-in-law, told her that in different areas of New York there are spaces where artists can exhibit and sell their work directly to the public. Pepa found one near the MET and, despite her cultural prejudices about the idea of “selling on the street,” she took the chance and thus began her series of magnets and prints dedicated to New York.

Todo creció como una bola de nieve. La gente que visitaba su stand comenzó a pedirle obras originales. Un día recibió un email del MoMA con una propuesta de negocio y fue así que Pepa le vendió a la tienda del museo dos modelos de láminas de edición limitada. En solo unos meses las láminas se habían agotado. Hoy la tienda cuenta con otros dos modelos de láminas: New York taxi ride y Liberty Harbor.

Más tarde se enteró del Mercado de Navidad de Union Square en Nueva York y se inscribió para tener un puesto allí y este año cumplirá su cuarto año como expositora.

It all snowballed from there. People visiting her stand began asking her for original works. One day she received an email from MoMA with a business proposal, and that’s how Pepa sold two limited edition prints to the museum shop. In just a few months, the prints had sold out. Today, the shop has two other prints: New York taxi ride and Liberty Harbor.

Later, she found out about the Union Square Christmas Market in New York and signed up for a stall there. This year will be her fourth year as an exhibitor.

Cuando le pregunté por un sueño, me contó que le encantaría ilustrar la tapa de The New Yorker y que se la dedicaría a su suegro Peter, su neoyorquino favorito, ya que fue quien le dio el primer empujón para mostrar al mundo lo que hacía y la animó para que vendiera su arte.

When I asked her about a dream, she told me that she would love to illustrate the cover of The New Yorker and that she would dedicate it to her father-in-law Peter, her favorite New Yorker, since he was the one who gave her the first push to show the world what she was doing and encouraged her to sell her art.

Pepa siente fascinación por el arte hispanoamericano y sus colores. Algunos de sus referentes artísticos son Fernando Botero, Ángel Botello y Joaquín Torres García, entre otros.

Respecto al tema del color Pepa dice: “mezclo mis propios colores, y voy pintando poco a poco para ir viendo cómo la obra va cobrando vida gracias al color. Siempre la misma paleta, lo que hace muy reconocible mi arte, no solo por el estilo pero también por el color. Trabajo con óleo pero no dejo textura lo que le da un aspecto de serigrafía y hasta muchos me han preguntado si los he hecho en forma digital”.

Pepa is fascinated by Hispanic American art and its colors. Some of her artistic influences include Fernando Botero, Ángel Botello, and Joaquín Torres García, among others.

Regarding color, Pepa says, “I mix my own colors and paint little by little to see how the work comes to life thanks to color. I always use the same palette, which makes my art very recognizable, not only for its style but also for its color. I work with oil but don’t leave any texture, which gives it a silkscreen look, and many people have even asked me if I made them digitally.”

Pepa realiza obras por encargo y también participa en distintos eventos artísticos, como el Armonk Outdoor Show https://www.instagram.com/armonkoutdoorartshow/ donde fue invitada a formar parte de ‘Armonk Has Heart’, un proyecto que compartirá junto a otros once artistas.

Pepa intervino un corazón de fibra de vidrio con su estilo único al que llamó Love Letters una declaración de amor a través de los pinceles a todos los lugares que ocupan un lugar especial en la vida de Pepa.

Pepa creates commissioned works and also participates in various artistic events, such as the Armonk Outdoor Show https://www.instagram.com/armonkoutdoorartshow/ where she was invited to be part of ‘Armonk Has Heart’, a project she will share with eleven other artists.

Pepa painted a fiberglass heart in her unique style, calling it Love Letters, a declaration of love through paintbrushes to all the places that hold a special place in Pepa’s life.

Fue muy agradable conversar con Pepa, me encantó escucharla hablar con tanta gratitud, reconociendo cómo cada paso en su camino la llevó hasta este presente, en el que puede dedicarse a lo que ama: pintar.

Pepa es de esas personas que inspiran, que transmiten entusiasmo y amor por lo que hacen, y que una quisiera tener siempre cerca para contagiarse de su energía luminosa. Le estoy muy agradecida y a quien espero conocer personalmente.

It was very pleasant to talk to Pepa. I loved listening to her talk with so much gratitude, recognizing how each step along her path led her to this present moment, in which she can dedicates herself to what she loves: painting.

Pepa is one of those inspiring people who transmit enthusiasm and love for what they do, and who you want to have around all the time so you can be contagious with their luminous energy. I am very grateful to her and hope to meet her in person someday.
