In August 2024, I spent two days in Seattle and, of course, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit some bookstores. I asked my friend and writer Jessica Villar https://www.instagram.com/villarjess/, who lives in the city, for recommendations, and one of her suggestions was Arundel Books https://www.instagram.com/arundelbooks/, located in the historic Pioneer Square neighborhood.

On a sunny Sunday, I visited Arundel, the bookstore located on the corner of an impeccably preserved old building. Its large windows invite you to enter, and once inside, the white columns, domed ceilings, and neat shelves create an elegant atmosphere, with an air of solemnity and good taste that surrounds the entire space. Although the real stars there are the books and art.

Un domingo soleado me acerqué a Arundel, la librería está ubicada en la esquina de un edificio antiguo, impecablemente conservado. Sus grandes ventanales invitan a entrar, y una vez adentro, las columnas blancas, los techos abovedados y las estanterías prolijas crean un ambiente elegante, con un aire de solemnidad y buen gusto que envuelve todo el espacio. Aunque los verdaderos protagonistas allí son los libros y el arte.

That day, I had the opportunity to speak with Phil Bevis, founder of the bookstore. He told me that it all began in 1984, when he decided to publish Zane Grey’s The Western Motion Picture, printed by Harry Reese of Turkey Press. To do so, he purchased a Vandercook SP-15 press and began printing books and brochures using letterpress.

Ese día tuve la suerte de conversar con Phil Bevis, fundador de la librería. Me contó que los comienzos fueron en 1984, cuando decidió publicar The Western Motion Picture de Zane Grey, impreso por Harry Reese de Turkey Press y para lo cual adquirió una prensa Vandercook SP-15 y comenzó a imprimir libros y folletos en tipografía.

In 1987, Phil added mail-order book sales to his printing and publishing activities. The first store opened in Los Angeles that same year, and in 1995 the Seattle headquarters was established. For more than twenty-five years, Phil has been involved in almost every aspect of the publishing world as a bookseller, publisher, printer, and appraiser of books and manuscripts.

En 1987, Phil sumó a las actividades de impresión y edición la venta de libros por correo. El primer local abrió en Los Ángeles ese mismo año, y en 1995 llegó la sede de Seattle. Durante más de veinticinco años, Phil ha estado vinculado a casi todos los aspectos del mundo editorial como librero, editor, impresor, tasador de libros y manuscritos.

When you walk into Arundel, you’ll be amazed by the wide range of books on offer, covering all kinds of genres. They also have a section dedicated to rare and antique books at the back of the store, a real treasure trove for those who enjoy discovering hidden gems.

Al entrar en Arundel uno se sorprender con la amplitud de su catálogo donde es posible encontrar todo tipo de géneros pero además cuentan con una sección dedicada a libros raros y antiguos en el fondo del local, un verdadero tesoro para quienes disfrutan descubrir joyas escondidas.

There is also space for titles from Chatwin Books https://www.instagram.com/chatwinbooks/, an independent publishing house founded by Phil Bevis and Annie Brulé in 2014. Their books stand out for the beauty of their editions and the quality of their paper. Since 2018, they have had their own printing facilities, allowing them to produce locally and in line with their values. Right across from the bookstore is their workshop and an art gallery, which amplifies the dreamy, creative atmosphere that fills the place.

También hay un espacio para los títulos de Chatwin Books https://www.instagram.com/chatwinbooks/, una editorial independiente fundada por Phil Bevis y Annie Brulé en 2014. Sus libros llaman la atención por la belleza de las ediciones y la calidad del papel. Desde 2018 cuentan con sus propias instalaciones de impresión, lo que les permite producir de manera local y coherente con sus valores. Justo frente a la librería funciona su taller y también una galería de arte, que amplifica ese aire de ensueño y creatividad que se respira en el lugar.
