New York City

I did some research on its history and discovered that the Strand bookstore was founded in 1927 by Benjamin “Ben” Bass in the historic Book Row District, where 48 bookstores once stood side by side.

In 1957, Fred Bass, Ben’s son, moved the bookstore to its current location. In the documentary The Booksellers, Nancy Bass Wyden, Fred’s daughter and current owner, recounts how Strand was the only bookstore that survived from that group over the years.

With so many years of history in a city as cinematographic as New York, it’s no surprise that Strand has appeared in several films and series. Some of these include Julie & Julia (written and directed by the unforgettable Nora Ephron), Remember Me, Six Degrees of Separation, Sex and the City, the series Dash & Lily, and the previously mentioned documentary The Booksellers.

The building was under repair during my visit, so it wasn’t easy to take good photos of its façade. However, the most important part was inside.

The selection of books is huge: philosophy, science fiction, children’s literature, poetry, essays, novels, history, among many others. There is an interesting mix of first editions, used books, and rare copies. There are shelves with special selections made by the employees, “blind date” tables with wrapped books to surprise the reader, and even a room dedicated to rare books that can be rented for events.

Strand also has a large stationery section, a corner dedicated to New York (cards, posters, puzzles, maps, souvenirs), and a whole universe of its own merchandise: bags, T-shirts, mugs, notebooks, desk accessories

The bookstore organizes events almost every day, and there are days dedicated to buying used books, which are evaluated directly by its staff. In addition to its main location on Broadway and 12th Street, Strand has other locations in the city: 450 Columbus Avenue, 2020 Broadway, 60th Street & 5th Avenue, a kiosk in Central Park, and at LaGuardia Airport.

What moves me most about a place like this is that, despite the passage of time, it continues to be a meeting place: a space where people buy paper books, look for collectible editions, and also gather, share, and build community.

The Strand bookstore is undoubtedly a must-see destination for any book lover visiting New York. Stepping inside is like breathing in history. Let’s support independent bookstores.
