For my trip to New York in September this year, I made a list of bookstores I wanted to visit, and Rizzoli Bookstore https://www.instagram.com/rizzolibookstore/was high on that list. Partly because of its history: founded in 1964 by Angelo Rizzoli, the bookstore has since become a cultural icon of the city. Its first location was at 712 Fifth Avenue, a space that soon became a meeting place for book and art lovers.

In addition, in 1974, Rizzoli founded its own publishing house, Rizzoli New York https://www.instagram.com/rizzolibooks/, specializing in illustrated books on art, architecture, design, photography, and gastronomy—true works of art both for their content and the quality of their editions. Another reason why it was on my list.

Para mi viaje a Nueva York, en septiembre de este año, preparé una lista de librerías que quería visitar, y Rizzoli Books https://www.instagram.com/rizzolibooks/ ocupaba un lugar destacado. En parte fue por su historia: fundada en 1964 por Angelo Rizzoli, la librería se convirtió desde entonces en un ícono cultural de la ciudad. Su primera ubicación estuvo en el 712 de la Quinta Avenida, un espacio que pronto se volvió punto de encuentro para amantes de los libros y el arte.

Además en 1974, Rizzoli fundó su propia editorial, Rizzoli New York https://www.instagram.com/rizzolibooks/ especializada en libros ilustrados sobre arte, arquitectura, diseño, fotografía y gastronomía, verdaderas obras de arte tanto por su contenido como por la calidad de sus ediciones. Otra razón para que estuviese en mi lista.

Rizzoli Universe, formerly Universe Publishing, was incorporated in 1990, publishing books, playing cards, and calendars on a wide variety of topics such as popular culture, art, photography, humor, crafts, counterculture, travel, and more. Rizzoli also prints catalogs for its own exhibitions under the Rizzoli Electa label, which is affiliated with Italy’s Mondadori Electa.

In 2024, they acquired Chelsea Green Publishing, a leader in promoting sustainable practices, focusing on organic and regenerative agriculture and gardening; nature and the environment; healthy eating; local economies and resilient communities; and health and wellness.

Every month, on their website https://www.rizzoliusa.com/, they introduce new releases that can be purchased online or in bookstores, true gems both for their content and for the quality of the paper and the care taken in their design.

Rizzoli Universe, anteriormente Universe Publishing, se incorporó en 1990 publicando libros, barajas y calendarios sobre una amplia variedad de temas como la cultura popular, el arte, la fotografía, el humor, la artesanía, la contracultura, los viajes entre otros. Rizzoli además imprime los catálogos para sus propias exhibiciones con el sello Rizzoli Electa emparentada con la italiana Mondadori Electa.

On its shelves, titles on literature, history, and essays coexist alongside a selection of books in French, Italian, and Spanish, where I once again encountered Julio Cortázar’s Rayuela, this time in its original language, although I never stop being surprised every time I find it translated into so many languages.

En sus estanterías conviven títulos de literatura, historia y ensayo, junto con una selección de libros en francés, italiano y español, donde volví a encontrar a Julio Cortázar con Rayuela, esta vez en su idioma original, aunque no dejo de sorprenderme cada vez que lo encuentro traducido a tantos idiomas.

In addition to books, Rizzoli offers a selection of stationery, notebooks, and desk accessories, as well as publications dedicated to New York City and a children’s book section.

Además de los libros, Rizzoli ofrece una selección de papelería, cuadernos y objetos de escritorio, así como publicaciones dedicadas a la ciudad de Nueva York y una sección de libros infantiles.

Before settling in its current location in the historic St. James building, Rizzoli occupied an elegant house at 31 West 57th Street for nearly thirty years. That space, with its marble columns and classic atmosphere, was a haven for book and culture lovers for decades.

However, in 2014, the bookstore had to close its doors when the building was sold and demolished to make way for a new real estate development. As often happens in many cities, modernity advanced on a place that had been part of New York’s cultural memory. But Rizzoli managed to reinvent itself without losing its spirit: today, at its Broadway headquarters, it retains some of the furniture and details that shaped its identity, proving that history can continue, even after changing location. The soul of the place remains intact.

Antes de instalarse en su ubicación actual en el histórico edificio St. James, Rizzoli ocupó durante casi treinta años una elegante casa en el 31 West 57th Street. Ese espacio, con sus columnas de mármol y su atmósfera clásica, fue durante décadas un refugio para los amantes de los libros y la cultura.

Sin embargo, en 2014, la librería debió cerrar sus puertas cuando el edificio fue vendido y demolido para dar paso a un nuevo desarrollo inmobiliario. Como suele suceder en muchas ciudades, la modernidad avanzó sobre un lugar que había sido parte de la memoria cultural de Nueva York. Pero Rizzoli logró reinventarse sin perder su espíritu: hoy, en su sede de Broadway, conserva parte del mobiliario y de los detalles que formaron su identidad, demostrando que la historia puede continuar, incluso después de haber cambiado de lugar. El alma del lugar continúa intacta.

Rizzoli was chosen on several occasions by film directors such as Woody Allen in Manhattan, Ulu Grosbard in Falling in Love, and Peter Bogdanovich in They All Laughed to shoot some of their scenes in that Fifth Avenue building.

In 2024, Pedro Almodóvar shot some scenes for his film The Room Next Door at the new Rizzoli; the Spanish director’s first film entirely in English and nominated for an Oscar.

Rizzoli fue elegida en varias oportunidades por directores de cine como Woody Allen en Manhattan, Ulu Grosbard en Falling in Love o Peter Bogdanovich en They All Laughed para filmar algunas de sus escenas en aquel edificio de la Quinta Avenida.

En 2024 , Pedro Almodovar rodó algunas escenas para su película The Room Next Door, en la nueva Rizzoli; la primera del director español completamente en inglés y nominada al Oscar.

When I entered, I was amazed by the atmosphere that transports you to another time, with dark wood shelves, floors, bronze lamps (much of the furniture brought from the previous locations), and high ceilings painted with clouds. Everything invites you to take your time and enjoy it.

Al entrar quedé asombrada por esa atmósfera que transporta a otros tiempos con las estanterías de madera oscura, los pisos, las lámparas de bronce (mucho del mobiliario traído de los locales anteriores) los techos altos pintados con nubes, todo invita a tomarse el tiempo para el disfrute.

At the back of the bookstore there is a space with a small stage for presentations, readings, and conversations with authors. It is a place for readers with writers to meet and exchange ideas.

Al fondo de la librería hay un espacio con un pequeño escenario destinado a presentaciones, lecturas y conversaciones con autoras y autores. Un lugar de encuentro, de intercambio entre lectoras, lectores con escritoras y escritores.

Rizzoli Bookstore is one of those places that I recommend adding to your list if you are thinking of visiting New York, especially if you are a book lover.
