My name is Patricia Yoshioka and I live in southern California. Ever since I was little, I have always considered myself to be “right brained”. I would imagine pictures or images in my head, and then try to bring them into the world as a 3 dimensional object. As I grew older my mom started to teach me how to sew and I fell in love.

Mi nombre es Patricia Yoshioka y vivo en el sur de California. Desde que era pequeña, siempre me he considerado «de cerebro derecho». Imaginaba imágenes en mi cabeza y luego trataba de traerlas al mundo como un objeto tridimensional. A medida que fui creciendo, mi mamá empezó a enseñarme a coser y me enamoré.

Armed with only the basics, I slowly started to teach myself how to read patterns and adjust them to suit my needs. It helped that I also got into the world of cosplay, which allowed me to explore more intricate and detailed designs. Determined to be as accurate as possible, I learned from online sources and friends, how to design and create my own patterns. Since then I have won several awards in cosplay competitions and I am amazed to see how much my work has improved since I started. I am really proud of my latest creations.

Armada sólo con lo básico, poco a poco comencé a aprender a leer patrones y a ajustarlos para satisfacer mis necesidades. Ayudó que también me metiera en el mundo del cosplay, lo que me permitió explorar diseños más intrincados y detallados. Decidida a ser lo más precisa posible, aprendí de fuentes en línea (online) y de amigos a diseñar y crear mis propios patrones. Desde entonces he ganado varios premios en concursos de cosplay y me sorprende ver cuánto ha mejorado mi trabajo desde que empecé. Estoy muy orgulloso de mis últimas creaciones.

The people that have inspired me the most would definitely be my grandmother and mother. My abuelita would always make clothes for my mother and her sister, and then my mother would do the same for me. The aspect of taking a simple piece of fabric and turning it into something unique that you could wear was always fascinating to me. I will also be so thankful for having my mom as my sewing 101 teacher.

Las personas que más me han inspirado son definitivamente mi abuela y mi madre. Mi abuelita siempre hacía ropa para mi madre y su hermana, y luego mi madre hacía lo mismo para mí. Siempre me fascinó la idea de tomar una simple pieza de tela y convertirla en algo único que puedes usar. También estaré siempre muy agradecida por tener a mi mamá como maestra de costura.

One thing that I have learned while creating outfits for cosplay is that not everything works as intended. Sometimes the outfit folds in odd places or doesn’t fit the way you want it to. The worst feeling you could ever have, is to be working on something for months only to find out it doesn’t fit properly. The frustration and feeling of defeat can be overwhelming and can bring people to the verge of tears.

Una cosa que he aprendido al crear atuendos para cosplay es que no todo funciona según lo previsto. A veces, el atuendo se dobla en lugares extraños o no queda como quieres. La peor sensación que podrías tener es estar trabajando en algo durante meses y descubrir que no encaja correctamente. La frustración y el sentimiento de derrota pueden ser abrumadores y pueden hacer que la gente quede al borde de las lágrimas.

My only advice to those that are feeling like this is to never give up, adapt, and learn moving forward. I also encourage people to try new things and new mediums. You will never know what you can create unless you try.

Mi único consejo para aquellos que se sienten así es que nunca se rindan, que se adapten y aprendan a seguir adelante. También animo a la gente a probar cosas nuevas y nuevos medios. Nunca sabrás lo que puedes crear a menos que lo intentes.
