My name is Jennifer Foran. I am an artist currently living in Portland Oregon. My art reflects my love of nature. I was born and raised in rural Pennsylvania and, as a child, I always had an interest in art. When I moved to Portland in my early twenties I found myself drawn to Mt. Tabor Park. I was completely inspired by it’s grandeur and the way the light passed through the tree trunks. I loved how the trees could make you feel so small but at the same time provide comfort, shelter and stability. It was there that I decided to paint images of trees. 

Me llamo Jennifer Foran y soy una artista que vive actualmente en Portland, Oregon. Mi arte refleja mi amor por la naturaleza. Nací y crecí en la zona rural de Pennsylvania y, de niña, siempre me interesó el arte. Cuando me mudé a Portland a los veinte años, me sentí atraída por el parque de Mt Tabor. Me inspiró mucho su grandeza y la forma en que la luz atravesaba los troncos de los árboles. Me encantaba cómo los árboles podían hacerte sentir tan pequeña, pero al mismo tiempo te proporcionaban comodidad, refugio y estabilidad. Fue allí donde decidí pintar imágenes de árboles.

Throughout my life, I have explored different professions that all relate to art. I have worked in museums, galleries and non-profit organizations. A majority of my professional career was dedicated to teaching art from pre-k through high school. This opportunity allowed me to be inspired by young artists who intuitively expressed their creativity without hesitation or fear of mistakes. It was rewarding to work with a diverse group of students in a variety of environments. 

A lo largo de mi vida, he explorado diferentes profesiones relacionadas con el arte. Trabajé en museos, galerías y organizaciones sin fines de lucro. La mayor parte de mi carrera profesional la dediqué a la enseñanza del arte desde el preescolar hasta la escuela secundaria (instituto) . Esta oportunidad me permitió inspirarme en jóvenes artistas que expresaban intuitivamente su creatividad sin vacilar ni tenerle miedo a los errores. Fue gratificante trabajar con un grupo variado de estudiantes en diferentes entornos.

Throughout this time, I was continuing to pursue my art – exploring and honing my process which began by reproducing images of trees with acrylic paint on reclaimed cabinet doors. Eventually, I felt that the natural wood needed to be exposed so my work evolved as I began to incorporate the knots and natural grain. I would first sketch the image of the tree and then add detail to the image using a wood burning tool. I would add stain to enhance the grain of the wood and add color with the acrylic paint. 

Durante este tiempo, continué con mi arte, explorando y perfeccionando mi proceso, que comenzó reproduciendo imágenes de árboles con pintura acrílica sobre puertas de armarios recuperadas. Con el tiempo, sentí que la madera natural necesitaba ser expuesta, así que mi trabajo evolucionó y comencé a incorporar los nudos y las vetas naturales. Primero esbozaba la imagen del árbol y luego añadía detalles a la imagen con una herramienta para quemar madera. Añadía tinte para realzar las vetas de la madera y añadía color con la pintura acrílica.

I continued to further develop this process after leaving my teaching career to be at home with my children. The time spent with my son and daughter made me slow down, go for walks and be outside more often (I credit my son, Liam, and daughter, Lydia, for my Change of Seasons Series). I also began to dedicate more time to my art and refine my process and continue to do so to this day. When people see my art I want them to discover the cycles within nature; the soft spoken reminder that everything is connected; a balance of give and take.

Continué desarrollando este proceso después de dejar mi carrera docente para estar en casa con mis hijos. El tiempo que pasé con mi hijo y mi hija me hizo ir más despacio, salir a pasear y estar al aire libre más a menudo (doy crédito a mi hijo, Liam, y a mi hija, Lydia, por mi serie Cambio de estación). También empecé a dedicar más tiempo a mi arte y a perfeccionar mi proceso, y sigo haciéndolo hasta hoy. Cuando la gente ve mi arte, quiero que descubra los ciclos de la naturaleza; el recordatorio en voz baja de que todo está conectado; un equilibrio de dar y recibir.
