El 4 de abril del 2023, la Biblioteca Pública de Camas cumplió 100 años y para celebrar la ocasión se organizó un merecido festejo con música y torta de cumpleaños 🎂. La biblioteca ha sido y es un pilar fundamental para la comunidad de Camas.

On April 4, 2023, the Camas Public Library turned 100 years old and to celebrate the anniversary a well-deserved celebration was organized with music and birthday cake 🎂. The library has been and is a fundamental support for the community of Camas.

Todos sabemos cuánto cambió el mundo en estos últimos cien años y es interesante ver esa transformación a través de la historia de una institución como una biblioteca. La tecnología ha cambiado la forma en que leemos y accedemos a la información y sin embargo la biblioteca sigue siendo un espacio de reunión y socialización.

Algo para destacar es que la biblioteca de Camas se ha aggiornado a los tiempos que corren ofreciendo libros electrónicos, audiolibros y revistas en línea. También ofrecen un valioso espacio para la comunidad brindando charlas, talleres, organizando eventos culturales para todas las edades y hasta ayudando con los impuestos.

We all know how much the world has changed in the last hundred years and it is interesting to see that transformation through the history of an institution like a library. Technology has changed the way we read and access information and yet the library remains a space for gathering and socializing.

Something to highlight is that the Camas library has updated itself to the current times by offering e-books, audio books and online magazines. They also offer a valuable space for the community by giving talks, workshops, organizing cultural events for all ages and even helping with taxes.

La idea de la fundación de una biblioteca pública comenzó a gestarse en 1922 por The Camas Women´s Club (en ese momento Camas Relief and Civic Improvement Club). Trabajaron durante seis meses y en abril de 1923 Thayer´s Drugstore les donó un espacio donde con sólo 23 libros ubicados en una estantería de 13 dólares inauguraron la biblioteca. En octubre de 1924 la biblioteca tuvo su espacio propio y en 1926 contó con un presupuesto de 250 dólares para la compra de libros.

The idea of founding a public library was started in 1922 by The Camas Women’s Club (at that time Camas Relief and Civic Improvement Club). They worked for six months and in April 1923 Thayer’s Drugstore donated them a space where with only 23 books placed on a $13 shelf they opened the library. In October 1924 the library had its own space and in 1926 it had a budget of $250 for the purchase of books.

No es mi idea llenarte de información histórica pero quiero destacar algunos detalles que me llamaron la atención de los años que siguieron a su fundación En 1928 la biblioteca había entregado quinientos carnets de asociación y en 1938 la biblioteca del Estado de Washington informó que, por tercer año consecutivo, Camas tenía el récord de lectura per cápita más alto del Estado. Muy interesante 🙂

Hoy al observar el espacioso edificio que ocupa una manzana en el centro de Camas, es inevitable no pensar en los comienzos, en las sucesivas mudanzas que tuvo que vivir la biblioteca hasta llegar a ser lo que es hoy. Somos muy afortunados de contar con este lugar.

It is not my idea to fill you with historical information but I would like to highlight some details that caught my attention in the years following its founding In 1928 the library had issued five hundred association cards and in 1938 The Washington State library reported that for the third year in a row, Camas had the highest per capita reading record in the state. I found it very interesting 🙂

Today, looking at the spacious building that takes up a block in downtown Camas, it is impossible not to think of the beginnings, of the successive moving that the library had to undergo until it became what it is today. We are very fortunate to have this place.

Something I particularly enjoy is walking the aisles and letting myself be surprised by authors or books, sometimes taking one out and sitting in those comfortable couches to browse through it or take notes of things that catch my attention. That’s the magic of the paper book ❤️

Aunque también hay computadoras para buscar libros, saber de su disponibilidad y para leer si uno prefiere las pantallas. Otra cosa que a veces hago es ir con mis cosas a dibujar y a escribir a mano nuevas ideas. Es un lugar inspirador.

Although there are also computers to look for books, to know about their availability and to read if one prefers screens. Another thing I sometimes do is to go with my stuff to draw and handwrite new ideas. It’s an inspiring place.

Me considero una ávida lectora pero tengo que confesar con algo de pesar que me da un poco de fiaca (pereza) leer en inglés, voy más lento, me cansó más, es realmente un desafío. Aunque creo que es necesario salir de la zona de confort para poder leer a mis autores preferidos en su lengua original aunque me lleve más tiempo 😉

I consider myself an avid reader but I have to confess with some regret that I get a little lazy reading in English, I go slower, I get more tired, it’s really a challenge. Although I think it is necessary to get out of the comfort zone to be able to read my favorite authors in their original language even if it takes me more time 😉
