Mi primer viaje a Roma fue en enero del 2024 con un sueño en mente: sumergirme de manera glamorosa en la Fontana de Trevi como hicieron Anita Ekberg y Marcello Mastroianni en La Dolce Vita 🙂 .

My first trip to Rome was in January 2024 with a dream in mind: to glamorously plunge into the Trevi Fountain as Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni did in La Dolce Vita 🙂 .

Sin embargo, como te imaginarás, esto no fue posible. En primer lugar por el número de turistas que encontré a toda hora visitándola y en segundo lugar porque era invierno. Un invierno soleado y con temperaturas agradables; pero invierno al fin 😉

Creo cuando te mencionan Roma es inevitable no pensar en la Fontana de Trevi, en Plaza España, en la Plaza San Pedro y en algunos de los monumentos que aún se conservan del Imperio Romano: el Coliseo, el Foro y el Panteón. Creo que di una pista de cuál fue uno de mis favoritos.

However, as you can imagine, this was not possible. First of all because of the number of tourists that I found at all hours visiting it and in second place because it was winter. A sunny winter with pleasant temperatures; but winter after all 😉

I think when Rome is mentioned to you it is inevitable not to think of the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, St. Peter’s Square and some of the monuments that still remain from the Roman Empire: the Colosseum, the Forum and the Pantheon. I think I gave a clue as to which was one of my favorites.

La Fontana de Trevi fue diseñada por Nicola Salvi y construída detrás del Palazzo Poli en 1732. A lo largo de los años vi muchas fotos de la fuente y al visitarla me impresionaron el agua cristalina, la iluminación durante la noche y de manera especial la blancura del mármol ya que parecía que lo hubiesen pulido de manera enérgica. Algo había cambiado respecto de las fotos y como soy muy curiosa busqué información y me enteré que Fendi https://www.instagram.com/fendi/ realizó una importante inversión para remodelar la fuente hace unos años.

The Trevi Fountain was designed by Nicola Salvi and built behind the Palazzo Poli in 1732. Over the years I saw many photos of the fountain and when I visited it I was impressed by the clear water, the lighting at night and especially the whiteness of the marble as it looked as if it had been vigorously polished. Something had changed from the photos and as I am very curious I looked for information and I found out that Fendi https://www.instagram.com/fendi/ made an important investment to remodel the fountain a few years ago.

Roma fue el inicio de un recorrido por varias ciudades italianas que organizamos con Sandie y Brian, nuestros amigos australianos y compañeros de otras aventuras viajeras. Esa situación le dio un condimento especial a Roma y a las ciudades que le siguieron.

Estoy convencida de que son los recuerdos emotivos los que nos conectan de forma profunda con las ciudades que visitamos, más allá de las bellezas que estas puedan ofrecer. Y este viaje quedará grabado de una manera muy especial en mi memoria 💕💕

Rome was the start of a tour of several Italian cities that we organized with Sandie and Brian, our Australian friends and companions in other travel adventures. That situation gave a very special flavor to Rome and the cities that followed.

I am sure that it is the emotional memories that connect us in a deep way with the cities we visit, beyond the beauties they have to offer. And this trip will remain imprinted in a very special way in my memory 💕💕

Para continuar hablando la parte emotiva sentí que la gente en Roma le dio color y calidez a la ciudad. Fueron amables, risueños y se nota que disfrutan de la vida. Además recibían con entusiasmo que intentara hablar en italiano más con las manos (algo que me sale naturalmente) que con palabras, es decir estaba hablando en su idioma 😉

Roma es mucho más que los lugares icónicos que figuran en las guías o como prioritarios en la lista para la visita de la ciudad.

To continue talking about the emotional part, I felt that the people in Rome gave color and warmth to the city. They were friendly, smiling and you could tell they enjoyed life. They were also enthusiastic when I tried to speak Italian more with my hands (something that comes naturally to me) than with words, so I was speaking in their language 😉

Rome is much more than the iconic places listed in guidebooks or as a priority on the list for visiting the city.

Si tuviera que hacer una recomendación sobre qué visitar, lo primero que se me ocurre es decirte que camines por sus calles y te dejes sorprender. Eduardo Rubin https://www.instagram.com/edurubin/(escritor, fotógrafo de ciudades y compañero de El Faro https://www.instagram.com/nauexperiencias/ ) dice: » No quiero que nadie me diga dónde debo ir y qué debo visitar sino que disfruto perdiéndome entre las calles de la ciudad sin tener un plan» . Y esta reflexión aplica de manera perfecta para Roma.

Y en «modo exploración» encontré el anuncio de una muestra de M.C Escher https://mcescher.com/ en el Palazzo Bonaparte https://www.mostrepalazzobonaparte.it/ una joya arquitectónica ubicada cerca de la Piazza Venezia. En las salas donde estaba armada la exhibición interactiva de Escher podías ver, además de la obra del artista holandés, pinturas en los techos que son parte de la decoración del edificio. La experiencia fue una de las destacadas del viaje.

If I had to make a recommendation on what to visit, the first thing that comes to my mind is to tell you to walk around its streets and let yourself be surprised. Eduardo Rubin https://www.instagram.com/edurubin/ (writer, city photographer and partner of El Faro https://www.instagram.com/nauexperiencias/ ) says: «I don’t want anyone to tell me where I should go and what I should visit but I enjoy getting lost in the streets of the city without having a plan» . And this thought fits perfect to Rome.

And in «exploration mode» I found the announcement of an exhibition of M.C Escher https://mcescher.com/ in the Palazzo Bonaparte https://www.mostrepalazzobonaparte.it/ an architectural jewel located near Piazza Venezia. In the rooms where the interactive Escher exhibit was set up you could see, in addition to the Dutch artist’s work, paintings on the ceilings that are part of the building’s decoration. The experience was one of the highlights of the trip.

Mientras caminábamos hacia la Basílica de Santa Maria Maggiore nos encontramos en una intersección de calles con cuatro fuentes ubicadas una en cada esquina e integradas a los edificios.

Una de esas esculturas forma parte de la Iglesia de San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, más conocida como San Carlino debido a su pequeño tamaño. Esta iglesia fue diseñada por Francesco Borromini, un arquitecto y escultor que mantuvo una rivalidad con Gian Lorenzo Bernini, uno de los escultores más destacados del periodo barroco.

Lo interesante de esta iglesia fue el aprovechamiento que Borromini hizo de los pocos metros cuadrados con los que contaba sumado al bajo presupuesto, la decoración de ese fabuloso techo está hecha con yeso y estuco. El resultado fue una pequeña iglesia que merece ser visitada y si lo haces no te olvides de mirar hacia arriba.

As we walked towards the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore we found ourselves at an intersection of streets with four fountains located one on each corner and integrated into the buildings.

One of these sculptures is part of the Church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, better known as San Carlino due to its small size. This church was designed by Francesco Borromini, an architect and sculptor who maintained a rivalry with Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the most prominent sculptors of the Baroque period.

The interesting thing about this church was the use that Borromini made of the few square meters he had and the low budget, the decoration of that fabulous ceiling is made with plaster and stucco. The result was a small church that deserves to be visited and if you do, don’t forget to look up.

Durante ese mismo trayecto encontré otra curiosidad: la casa que ocupa la Embajada Argentina en Roma con los bustos de Manuel Belgrano y Bartolomé Mitre.

During that same trip I found another curiosity: the house where the Argentine Embassy in Rome is located with the busts of Manuel Belgrano and Bartolomé Mitre.

Y en otra caminata, también por casualidad, nos encontramos con la Basílica Santa Maria degli Angeli e de Martini con una fachada minimalista, algo inusual para las iglesias que normalmente se ven en Roma.

La iglesia fue diseñada por Miguel Angel sobre las ruinas de un antiguo baño termal romano. Luego Jacopo Del Duca y más tarde Luigi Vanvitelli continuaron con el proyecto debido a la muerte de Miguel Angel.

Siguiendo con las sorpresas vimos que la basílica cuenta con una línea meridiana que fue encargada por el Papa Clemente XI para comprobar si el calendario gregoriano era exacto, para tener herramientas precisas para calcular Pascuas y algunas malas lenguas dicen que por celos de que la Basílica de San Petronio en Bolonia ya contara con una. Más allá de sus motivaciones los cálculos de Francesco Bianchini fueron correctos, y tuvimos la oportunidad de verificarlo ya que al mediodía el sol entraba en la iglesia, marcando el lugar del día en el suelo. Este descubrimiento entusiasmó a Barnaby y Brian que a partir de ese momento se transformaron en buscadores de líneas meridianas en iglesias de otras ciudades.

And on another walk, also by chance, we came across the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e de Martini with a minimalist façade, something unusual for the churches normally seen in Rome.

The church was designed by Michelangelo on the ruins of an ancient Roman thermal bath. Later Jacopo Del Duca and later Luigi Vanvitelli continued the project due to Michelangelo’s death.

Continuing with the surprises we saw that the basilica has a meridian line that was commissioned by Pope Clement XI to check if the Gregorian calendar was accurate, to have precise tools to calculate Easter and some gossips say that out of jealousy that the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna already had one. Beyond papal motivations Francesco Bianchini’s calculations were correct, and we had the opportunity to verify them since at noon the sun entered the church, marking that day’s spot on the floor. This discovery excited Barnaby and Brian, who from that moment on became meridian line searchers in churches in other cities.

La otra postal típica romana fueron las mesas de bares y restaurantes puestas en ese límite impreciso entre veredas y calles mientras que la gente fumaba, charlaba, tomaba café, el vermouth o comía dependiendo de la hora del día. Y por supuesto nosotros también nos dejamos llevar por ese disfrute que nos propuso la ciudad.

The other typical Roman postcard were the tables of bars and restaurants placed in that imprecise limit between sidewalks and streets while people smoked, chatted, drank coffee, vermouth or ate depending on the time of day. And of course we also let ourselves be carried away by the enjoyment that the city offered us.

Lugares que visité en la ciudad

• Plaza España: las luces violáceas con las que las escaleras y la fuente estaban iluminadas le dieron un toque especial a la fotos nocturnas.
• Ciudad del Vaticano: necesitas hacer reservas con anticipación y algo muy importante es no olvidar llevar alguna identificación para la visita o no podrás ingresar. Cuenta con una enorme colección de esculturas, pinturas y me sentí abrumada por tanta riqueza. Fue emocionante ver las pinturas de Miguel Angel en la Capilla Sixtina, aunque los controles tan estrictos para que no tomes fotos o filmes, hicieron que la experiencia fuera un poco tensa.
• El Coliseo: me emocionan los lugares con tanta historia y escenario de tantos acontecimientos. Supongo que a muchos les pasó lo mismo y el lugar estuvo demasiado lleno de gente. Algo entendible todo el mundo quiere conocerlo.
• El Palatino: la antigua tradición dice que Rómulo construyó en esa colina el primer núcleo de Roma en la mitad del siglo VIII antes de Cristo. El lugar tiene muy buenas vistas de algunos edificios de la ciudad, del Foro y del Coliseo. Chequeá los horarios de cierre para poder tomarte el tiempo para disfrutar de la visita.
• Piazza Venezia: muchos escalones y posibilidades de subir a la parte más alta del edificio haciendo reservas. Un gran punto para ver la puesta del sol.
• El Partenón imponente edificio por fuera y por dentro.
• Basílica Maria della Magiore. Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 1990. Llama la atención la decoración en oro. Fue la residencia de los papas a su regreso de Aviñón antes de trasladarse a Ciudad del Vaticano.
• Algo que si o si hay que hacer: comer gelato y pasta y sentarte a tomar un spritz a la tardecita.

Places I visited in the city

• Spanish Square: the purple lights with which the stairs and the fountain were illuminated gave a special touch to the night photos.
• Vatican City: you need to make reservations in advance and something very important is not to forget to bring some ID for the visit or you will not be able to enter. It has a huge collection of sculptures, paintings and I felt overwhelmed for so much richness. It was exciting to see Michelangelo’s paintings in the Sistine Chapel, although the strict controls for not taking pictures or filming made the experience a bit tense.
• The Colosseum: I am thrilled by places with so much history and the scene of so many events. I guess the same thing happened to many of you and the place was too crowded. Understandably, everyone wants to see it.
• The Palatine Hill: the ancient tradition says that Romulus built on this hill the first nucleus of Rome in the middle of the eighth century BC. The place has very good views of some of the buildings of the city, the Forum and the Colosseum. Check the closing times to take the time to enjoy the visit.
• Piazza Venezia: many steps and possibilities to climb to the highest part of the building by making reservations. A great spot to watch the sunset.
• The Parthenon is an imposing building both inside and out.
• Basilica Maria della Magiore. World Heritage Site since 1990. It is remarkable for its gold decoration. It was the residence of the popes on their return from Avignon before moving to Vatican City.
• A must-do: eat gelato and pasta and sit down for spritz in the afternoon.

Disfruté muchísimo de Roma y dicen que si tirás una moneda en la Fontana di Trevi se cumplirá el deseo que pidas. Y siento que mi deseo de volver a partir de lo que te conté no es ningún secreto.

I enjoyed Rome very much and they say that if you throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain you will get your wish. And I feel that my wish to come back from what I told you is not a secret.
