En mis recorridos por librerías independientes de los barrios de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires me encontré con Mandrágora Libros y Cultura https://www.instagram.com/mandragora.librosycultura/ una joya ubicada en Vera 1096 entre Juan B Justo y Thames en el Barrio de Villa Crespo.

In my tours of independent bookstores in the neighborhoods of the City of Buenos Aires I came across Mandrágora Libros y Cultura https://www.instagram.com/mandragora.librosycultura/, a jewel located at Vera 1096 between Juan B Justo and Thames in the neighborhood of Villa Crespo.

La librería está situada en una casa pintada de blanco y el ingreso se realiza a través de un pequeño patio de paredes rojas. La escalera metálica que conduce a la terraza y la gran cantidad de plantas y macetas le dan a ese patio una atmósfera muy particular y además el nombre a la librería: Mandrágora está relacionada con la vegetación que la conforma junto al sonido de la palabra.

A continuación se abren dos puertas en las que apenas ingresás te reciben mesas y estantes con tantos y variados libros que tenés la sensación de necesitar numerosas vidas para poder leerlos a todos.

The bookstore is located in a house painted white and the entrance is through a small patio with red walls. The metal staircase leading to the terrace and the large number of plants and pots give the courtyard a very particular atmosphere and also the name of the bookstore: Mandrágora is related to the vegetation that makes it up along with the sound of the word.

Next, two doors open and as soon as you enter you are greeted by tables and shelves with so many different books that you feel as if you need several lives to be able to read them all.

Detrás del mostrador encontré a Carolina y Lorenzo listos para recibir a quienes visiten el espacio y brindar recomendaciones o contestar dudas.

En mi caso les había enviado un mensaje a través del Instagram anunciando mi visita el que fue respondido de inmediato y con mucha calidez.

Behind the counter I found Carolina and Lorenzo ready to welcome visitors to the store and offer recommendations or answer questions.

In my case I had sent them a message through Instagram announcing my visit which was answered immediately and with great warmth.

Carolina dueña de la librería junto con su esposo Juan, me comentó que durante la pandemia la comunicación virtual a través del WhatsApp y los mensajes de IG se volvió muy fluída; fue la manera de crear comunidad y de vender libros a los vecinos del barrio en esos tiempos de encierro.

A pesar de la incertidumbre provocada por la pandemia, Mandrágora experimentó un auge significativo en las ventas, ya que se leyó muchísimo durante ese período.

Aquellos espacios de lectura y escritura que habían sido presenciales se transformaron en virtuales y esto permitió que el público se expandiera ya que pudieron sumarse personas de diferentes lugares del país y del mundo.

Carolina, owner of the bookstore along with her husband Juan, told me that during the pandemic, virtual communication through WhatsApp and IG messages became very fluid; it was the way to create community and sell books to the people of the neighborhood in those times of confinement.

Despite the uncertainty caused by the pandemic, Mandrágora experienced a significant boom in sales, as it was enormously read during that period

Those reading and writing spaces that had been in person were transformed into virtual ones and this allowed the audience to expand as people from different parts of the country and the world were able to join in.

Mandrágora abrió sus puertas en el año 2018 y eligieron Villa Crespo porque es el barrio donde Carolina, Juan, su hija y su hijo habitan.  La particularidad de la librería es el catálogo abarca narrativa, ciencias sociales, ensayo, poesía, literatura infantil y juvenil.

Carolina dice que «es la curaduría sobre los libros y la cercanía con el público lector: elegimos y conocemos qué libros tenemos y conocemos a las personas que habitualmente se acercan a la librería. Nos gusta acercar libros con lectores, de eso se trata nuestra tarea».

Le comenté que me llamó la atención la cantidad de ejemplares que tienen sobre feminismo y género a lo que ella me responde que: «La perspectiva de género obviamente está presente porque tiene que ver con mi recorrido laboral en estas temáticas.»

Mandrágora opened its doors in 2018 and they chose Villa Crespo because it is the neighborhood where Carolina, Juan and their daughter and son live. The particularity of the bookstore is the catalog covers narrative, social sciences, essays, poetry, children’s and young adult literature.

Carolina says that «it is the curation of the books and the proximity to the reading public: we choose and know which books we have and we know the people who usually come to the bookstore. We like to bring books and readers together, that’s what our job is all about».

I told her that I was interested in the number of copies they have on feminism and gender, to which she replied: «The gender perspective is obviously present because it has to do with my work experience on these topics«

Cuando llegué, una mañana de sábado en el mes de mayo, estaban impartiendo un taller de escritura dictado por el escritor Santiago Craig https://www.instagram.com/xsantiagocraig/ en el entrepiso de la librería.

Caro me contó con alegría sobre la vuelta de las actividades presenciales con diferentes tipos de talleres: ilustración e historieta para niñas y niños, clubes y talleres de lectura y también de escritura.

En los meses primaverales la terraza es el lugar elegido para la presentación de libros. La mañana de mi visita un colchón de hojas ocres acompañaron mi subida a ese lugar mágico al que me gustaría volver cuando haya algún evento.

When I arrived, one Saturday morning in May, a writing workshop was being given by writer Santiago Craig https://www.instagram.com/xsantiagocraig/ on the mezzanine of the bookstore.

Caro was happy to tell me about the return of in-person activities with different types of workshops: illustration and comics for children, reading and writing clubs and workshops.

In the spring months the terrace is the place chosen for book presentations. On the morning of my visit, a bed of ochre leaves accompanied my ascent to this magical place to which I would like to return when there is an event.

El año pasado se animaron a editar algunos libros, tres de narrativa El horizonte es una jaula muda (Juan Cerono) La lenta reparación de los tejidos (Madeleine Wolff), Vías de extinción (Ana López) y uno poemario Escribir de noche (Bárbara Ali)  y esta fue una gran apuesta con mucho aprendizaje porque además de la selección de los textos, tuvieron que pensar en las ilustraciones y en una cantidad de cuestiones que no se tienen en cuenta hasta que no se conoce el proceso de edición por dentro. El esfuerzo valió la pena 🙂

Last year they were encouraged to edit some books, three narrative books El horizonte es una jaula muda (Juan Cerono) La lenta reparación de los tejidos (Madeleine Wolff), Vías de extinción (Ana López) and one poetry book Escribir de noche (Bárbara Ali) and this was a big bet with a lot of learning because besides the selection of the texts, they had to think about the illustrations and a number of issues that are not taken into account until you know the editing process from the inside. The effort worth it 🙂
