Visité el El Colonial https://www.instagram.com/barelcolonial/ Bar Notable de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires en noviembre del 2023,  gracias a la sugerencia de la fotógrafa Rox Gnoa https://www.instagram.com/rox_gnoa/ con quien tendría una entrevista para que fuese una de mis Amigas Artistas.

El bar está emplazado en la planta baja del edificio de la calle Perú 390, esquina Avenida Belgrano, en el Barrio de Montserrat. Los murales siempre captan mi atención así que mi mirada se dirigió a dos que forman parte de la fisonomía de El Colonial.

El mural en la parte superior, pintado al aceite y de 4 x 8 metros, fue dedicado a las Heladeras Polaris. Fue realizado en 1939 para la Casa de Electrodomésticos Banham Hnos y Cía (hoy Plásticos Perú SRL). En 2007 fue declarado bien integrante del Patrimonio Cultural de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.

El otro mural ubicado en la parte inferior es la adaptación de la obra 3 Siglos de Atardecer realizada por la Arquitecta Eleonora Dorrego https://www.instagram.com/eleonoradorrego/ con un conjunto de notables elementos que hacen nodo e hito de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Nodo: por ser el cruce de tres importantes sendas: Diagonal Sur, Perú y Alsina e hito: por ser monumento al General Roca una referencia de Montserrat dándole presencia y visión desde lejos.

I visited El Colonial https://www.instagram.com/barelcolonial/ Bar Notable in the City of Buenos Aires in November 2023, thanks to the proposal of the photographer Rox Gnoa https://www.instagram.com/rox_gnoa/ with whom I was going to have an interview to be one of my Artistic Friends.

The bar is located on the ground floor of the building at Perú 390, on the corner of Avenida Belgrano in the neighborhood of Montserrat. Murals always capture my attention so my eyes were focused on two that are part of the appearance of El Colonial.

The mural on the upper part, painted in oil and measuring 4 x 8 meters, was dedicated to the Polaris refrigerators. It was painted in 1939 for the Casa de Electrodomésticos Banham Hnos y Cía (today Plásticos Perú SRL). In 2007 it was declared part of the Cultural Heritage of the City of Buenos Aires.

The other mural located at the bottom is the adaptation of the artwork 3 Siglos de Atardecer (3 Centuries of Sunset) made by Architect Eleonora Dorrego https://www.instagram.com/eleonoradorrego/ with a set of remarkable elements that make node and landmark of the City of Buenos Aires. Node: for being the crossing of three important paths: Diagonal Sur, Peru and Alsina and landmark: for being a monument to General Roca a reference of Montserrat giving it presence and vision from afar.

La estética de El Colonial tampoco me pasó inadvertida, sus paredes pintadas de blanco con sus ventanas y puertas intervenidas con la técnica del filete porteño (*) realizado por el artista Gustavo Ferrari https://www.instagram.com/ferrarifileteados/ le dan la impronta de cafetín de Buenos Aires.

Una vez dentro encontré sus paredes decoradas con cuadros, posters y fotos que retratan momentos históricos de El Colonial y conforman una colección artística permanente.

Una foto del despacho de bebidas que fue El Colonial en 1930 y los cuadros titulados «Del tiempo viejo,» realizados por el pintor Julián González (1899-1968) con la técnica del aguafuerte, son testimonios vivos de su historia.

Fue interesante descubrir, a través de uno de esos cuadros colgados en sus paredes, que algunas escenas de la película «9 Reinas,» protagonizada por Ricardo Darín y Gastón Pauls, un clásico del cine argentino y también una de mis favoritas, fueron filmadas allí.

También encontré obra de la artista y arquitecta Marga Fabbri https://www.instagram.com/mirarmiradores/ https://www.instagram.com/margafabbri/ una persona muy comprometida con temáticas del patrimonio de la Ciudad quien donó una de sus obras (la de la portada de la nota) y que además ilustra los menúes de El Colonial.

The aesthetics of El Colonial did not go unnoticed by me either, its white painted walls with its windows and doors decorated with the «filete porteño» (*) technique by artist Gustavo Ferrari https://www.instagram.com/ferrarifileteados/ give it the look of a Buenos Aires cafe.

Once inside I found its walls decorated with paintings, posters and photos that portray historical moments of El Colonial and make up a permanent art collection.

A photo of the beverage store that was El Colonial in 1930 and the paintings entitled «Del tiempo viejo,» created by the painter Julián González (1899-1968) using the etching technique, are living testimonies of its history.

It was interesting to discover, through one of those pictures hanging on its walls, that some scenes from the movie «9 Reinas,» starring Ricardo Darín and Gastón Pauls, a classic of Argentine cinema and also one of my favorite films.

I also found the artwork of the artist and architect Marga Fabbri https://www.instagram.com/mirarmiradores/ https://www.instagram.com/margafabbri/ a person very committed to issues of heritage of the City who donated one of her paints (the one on the cover of the note) and also illustrates the menus of El Colonial.

En la barra hay una foto de Juan Vázquez, quien asumió la dirección de El Colonial en 2005. Este trabajador incansable, llegó desde España en 1958, formó su familia en Buenos Aires y dedicó toda su vida al rubro gastronómico. Comenzó como mozo, luego se convirtió en socio del Bar Escorpio junto con otros familiares, hasta finalmente llegar a El Colonial.

Hoy sus hijos Julieta y Alejandro continúan con su legado. Julieta bromea diciendo «a cada español que bajaba del barco en Buenos Aires le ponían una bandeja en la mano» 🙂

Una biblioteca con libros sobre la ciudad y otras curiosidades, para que quienes van por un café o a probar algunas de sus especialidades puedan leer, terminan de darle el toque mágico a este lugar.

On the bar there is a photo of Juan Vázquez, who took over the management of El Colonial in 2005. This hard worker, who arrived from Spain in 1958, raised his family in Buenos Aires and dedicated his whole life to the gastronomic business. He started as a waiter, then became a partner in Bar Escorpio along with other family members, until finally arriving at El Colonial.

Today his daughter Julieta and his son Alejandro continue his legacy. Julieta jokes that «every Spaniard who got off the boat in Buenos Aires was given a tray in his hand» 🙂

A library with books about the city and other curiosities, so that those who go for a coffee or to try some of its specialties can read, finish giving the magic touch to this place.

Sentí que me habían quedado muchas cosas por saber sobre El Colonial y Julieta muy amablemente me recibió en mayo del 2024 para que conversar sobre ellas, pero no sólo eso, sino que también había preparado notas especiales para mi .

Como ese día había visitado La Cisterna (otro sitio histórico) me acompañó por un rato Soledad Saubidet https://www.instagram.com/descubriendo.buenosaires/ y fue muy interesante escucharlas hablar de forma apasionada sobre las historias del barrio de Montserrat.

Descubrí que gracias a las gestiones de los hermanos Vázquez Hortal El Colonial se convirtió el 26 de octubre de 2014, en uno de los ochenta y dos bares notables de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires; categoría que reciben aquellos bares, billares o confiterías relacionados con hechos o actividades culturales de significación; aquellos cuya antigüedad, diseño arquitectónico o relevancia local, le otorgan un valor propio.

I felt that I had a lot of things left to know about El Colonial and Julieta very kindly received me in May 2024 to talk about them, but not only that, she had also prepared special notes for me.

As I had visited La Cisterna (another historical site) that day, I was accompanied for a while by Soledad Saubidet https://www.instagram.com/descubriendo.buenosaires/ and it was very interesting to hear them talk passionately about the stories of the Montserrat neighborhood.

I discovered that thanks to the efforts of the Vázquez Hortal brothers, on October 26, 2014, El Colonial became one of the eighty-two notable bars in the City of Buenos Aires; a category for those bars, billiards or coffee shops related to significant cultural events or activities; those whose antiquity, architectural design or local relevance give them a value of their own.

Me llena de alegría encontrar personas como Julieta, que transmiten con pasión lo que hacen y se esfuerzan constantemente por mantener vivo el patrimonio de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, organizando diferentes tipos de actividades culturales como presentaciones de libros, muestras fotográficas o charlas sobre diferentes temáticas, entre otras.

Me conmovió tener la oportunidad de ver los documentos de los trámites iniciados en 2011 para que El Colonial se convirtiera en Bar Notable. Esa intimidad y confianza caracterizaron nuestra charla, y por esos pequeños pero significativos detalles, estoy muy agradecida.

Julieta me contó que en el año 1931 bajo la dirección del Ingeniero Jorge Bunge se termina de construir el edificio de la calle Perú 390 y que en su planta baja albergaba a el Bar El Colonial. Esa construcción fue pensada teniendo en cuenta un futuro ensanche de lo que es hoy la Avenida Belgrano para que siguiera dentro de la línea de construcción y que el Patrimonio siguiera vivo a pesar de los cambios. Las fotos a continuación muestran ese cambio, ese proceso.

It gives me great joy to meet people like Julieta, who transmit with passion what they do and constantly work hard to keep alive the heritage of the City of Buenos Aires, organizing different types of cultural activities such as book presentations, photographic exhibitions or talks on different topics, among others.

I was touched to have the opportunity to see the documents of the proceedings initiated in 2011 for El Colonial to become Bar Notable. That intimacy and trust characterized our talk, and for those small but significant details, I am very grateful.

Julieta told me that in 1931, under the direction of the engineer Jorge Bunge, the building at Perú 390 was completed and that its first floor housed the Bar El Colonial. That construction was conceived taking into account a future widening of what is now Avenida Belgrano so that it would remain within the construction line and that the heritage would remain alive despite the changes. The photos below show that change, that process.

Julieta es una apasionada de la historia Argentina, y el lugar que ocupa El Colonial, junto con sus alrededores, es parte de esa historia. Justo enfrente se encuentra el imponente edificio Otto Wulff, que ocupa el espacio donde estuvo la Casa de la Virreina y que, según la historia, fue el último bastión de resistencia contra los ingleses en 1807. A su lado está la iglesia presbiteriana San Andrés, cuyos fundadores también crearon la Universidad de San Andrés. A la vuelta, en la calle Moreno, se puede visitar La Cisterna, uno de los nuevos patrimonios recuperados en la ciudad. Además, en la misma cuadra, se encuentra la academia de música, donde La Balcarce https://www.instagram.com/labalcarce.orq/ una orquesta de tango formada por jóvenes, van a merendar dos veces por semana al bar .

Julieta is passionate about Argentine history, and the place occupied by El Colonial, along with its surroundings, is part of that history. Just across the street is the imposing Otto Wulff building, which occupies the space where the Casa de la Virreina once stood and which, according to history, was the last bastion of resistance against the English in 1807. Next to it is the San Andrés Presbyterian Church, whose founders also created the Universidad de San Andrés. On the way back, on Moreno Street, you can visit La Cisterna, one of the new patrimonies recovered in the city. Also, on the same block, there is the music academy, where La Balcarce https://www.instagram.com/labalcarce.orq/ , a tango orchestra formed by young people, goes to the bar twice a week for a snack.

Pero no todo es cultura en El Colonial 🙂 también es el lugar elegido por muchas personas que trabajan o están de paseo por la zona para almorzar o tomar café. Uno de los clásicos es el «sandwich de matambre» entre otras especialidades porteñas.

En noviembre del 2023 el equipo de cocina de El Colonial recibió el Sello Cocinar 2023 por cumplir con una serie de pautas para ofrecer una propuesta representativa de la cocina local, manteniendo un estándar de excelencia. El mismo fue otorgado por el Ente de Turismo de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires conjuntamente con el Ministerio de Turismo y Deportes de la Nación.

But not everything is culture at El Colonial 🙂 it is also the place chosen by many people who work or are visiting the area for lunch or coffee. One of the classics is «the matambre sandwich» among other porteño specialties.

In November 2023, El Colonial’s kitchen team received the Sello Cocinar 2023 (award) for complying with a series of guidelines to offer a representative proposal of the local cuisine, maintaining a standard of excellence. This award was granted by the Ente de Turismo de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires in conjunction with the National Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Por las mesas de El Colonial han pasado diversas figuras, como Jorge Luis Borges, quien solía tomar un café allí después de su jornada laboral cuando fue auxiliar y luego Director de la Biblioteca Nacional, ubicada en México 564, entre 1955 y 1973.

A partir de 1962, los periodistas de la revista Primera Plana, como Jacobo Timerman, Luis Ernesto Gonzalez O`Donnell, Ramiro de Casasbellas, Tomás Eloy Martínez, Ernesto Schoo, Roberto Aizcobe, Osiris Troiani, Julian Delgado y Norberto Firpo, frecuentaban El Colonial.

A principios de la década del 80 un comité de la Unión Cívica Radical se instaló en las cercanías de El Colonial y Dante Caputo, quien luego sería el Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores y Culto del gobierno de Raúl Alfonsín era un habitué del lugar.

The tables of El Colonial have been frequented by various figures, such as Jorge Luis Borges, who used to have a coffee there after work when he was assistant and then Director of the National Library, located in Mexico 564, between 1955 and 1973.

From 1962 on, journalists from Primera Plana magazine, such as Jacobo Timerman, Luis Ernesto Gonzalez O`Donnell, Ramiro de Casasbellas, Tomás Eloy Martínez, Ernesto Schoo, Roberto Aizcobe, Osiris Troiani, Julian Delgado and Norberto Firpo, frequented El Colonial.

In the early 80’s a committee of the Unión Cívica Radical was installed in the vicinity of El Colonial and Dante Caputo, who would later become the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Raúl Alfonsín’s government, was a regular at the place.

En El Colonial se realizan celebraciones como la Noche de los Bares Notables que fue creada en el 2022 por el Ministerio de Cultura de la Ciudad o diferentes tipos de charlas como por ejemplo de Patrimonio Gastronómico, sólo por poner un ejemplo.

Agradezco muchísimo el tiempo dedicado por Julieta y la pasión que ponen estos hermanos para hacer que El Colonial https://www.instagram.com/barelcolonial/sea uno de los representativos de la historia y cultura de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. 

El Colonial hosts celebrations such as Noche de los Bares Notables (the Night of the Remarkable Bars), which was created in 2022 by the Ministry of Culture of the City, or different types of talks such as Gastronomic Heritage, just to give an example.

I am very grateful for the time dedicated by Julieta and the passion that these Vazquez siblings put into making El Colonial https://www.instagram.com/barelcolonial/sea one of the representatives of the history and culture of the City of Buenos Aires.
