Ana Catania https://www.instagram.com/galactica1980/, writer and organizer of writing and reading workshops, was the one who recommended Mandolina Libros https://www.instagram.com/mandolinalibros/ when I told her about the project of visiting and writing about independent bookstores.

Comencé a seguirla en Instagram y lo que captó mi atención fue la cantidad y variedad de talleres que organizan: clubes de lectura, talleres de escritura, encuadernación, pintura, una oferta que va variando mes a mes. A su vez, realizan actividades gratuitas en la terraza, ciclos de lectura, encuentros de poesía, entre otras, cuando el clima lo permite.

I started following it on Instagram and what caught my attention was the number and variety of workshops they organize: reading clubs, writing workshops, bookbinding, painting, an offer that varies month by month. At the same time, they organize free activities on the terrace, reading series, poetry meetings, among others, when the weather allows it.

Llegué a Mandolina Libros una tarde de mayo luego de haberles comentado por mensaje que pasaría a visitarlos. La librería se encuentra en Manuel Ugarte 2439 a metros de la Avenida Cabildo y de la Estación de subte Congreso de Tucumán.

Mandolina Libros está ubicada en una casita pequeña de dos pisos con terraza, decorada con banderines en el balcón y con muchos libros en la vidriera. En la terraza es donde realizan las actividades abiertas y gratuitas, como los ciclos de lectura, entre otras. En la calle, además de una cartelera con promociones bancarias, hay un rack para dejar bicicletas 🚲

I arrived at Mandolina Libros one afternoon in May after having told them by message that I would visit them. The bookstore is located at Manuel Ugarte 2439, a few meters from Avenida Cabildo and Congreso de Tucumán subway station.

Mandolina Libros is housed in a small two-story house with a terrace, decorated with pennants on the balcony and with many books in the window. On the terrace is where open and free activities are held, such as reading series, among others. On the street, in addition to a billboard with bank promotions, there is a rack to leave bicycles 🚲

Al ingresar, una gran mesa central exhibe una amplia selección de libros, con muchos más en las estanterías laterales. En el mostrador, al fondo del local, se pueden encontrar productos de FERA https://www.instagram.com/fera.design/ tarjetas y un canasto con libros sugeridos.

Cuando pregunto acerca de los libros que se pueden encontrar en Mandolina, Valen dice: «Nos especializamos en literatura y trabajamos principalmente con editoriales independientes argentinas. A su vez, trabajamos mucho en la curaduría de nuestro catálogo haciendo un recorte artesanal sobre las publicaciones de cada editorial».

As you enter, a large central table displays a wide selection of books, with many more on the side shelves. At the counter, at the back of the store, you can find FERA https://www.instagram.com/fera.design/ products, cards and a basket of recommended books.

When I ask about the books that can be found at Mandolina, Valen says: «We specialize in literature and work mainly with Argentine independent publishers. At the same time, we work a lot on the curation of our catalog by hand-cutting the publications of each publisher».

Me recibió Ceci quien trabaja allí desde hace un año y cuando comenzaba a contarme la historia del lugar, llegó una clienta que buscaba un libro específico y además solicitaba una recomendación para hacer un regalo. Se dio una linda charla e intercambio del que también formé parte discretamente ☺️

I was welcomed by Ceci who has been working there for a year and when she began to tell me the history of the place, a client arrived looking for a specific book and also asking for a recommendation for a gift. A nice chat and exchange took place and I also took part in it discreetly ☺️

Ceci me cuenta que el nombre Mandolina está inspirado en la canción Mandolín de Gustavo Pena. Siento que ya elección del nombre es poética:

«Tiene una mirada ebria de palabras y poesía

Bajo un cielo claro de un pueblito por ahí

Un mundo imaginario hecho de ilusiones coloridas

Y el amor, monta en su caballo y es feliz»

Ceci told me that the name Mandolina is inspired by the song Mandolín by Gustavo Pena. I feel that the name choice is already poetic:

«Tiene una mirada ebria de palabras y poesía

Bajo un cielo claro de un pueblito por ahí

Un mundo imaginario hecho de ilusiones coloridas

Y el amor, monta en su caballo y es feliz»

Mandolina Libros abrió sus puertas hace 4 años y es un referente en el barrio; me cuenta que cada diciembre para el cumpleaños de la librería cortan la calle y realizan una celebración, una manera de acercar libros a la comunidad.

Mandolina Libros opened its doors 4 years ago and is a reference in the neighborhood; she tells me that every December for the bookstore’s birthday they close the street and hold a celebration, a way to bring books to the community.

Mientras que estuve allí el movimiento fue contínuo, mucha gente llegó para consultar sobre algunos títulos o pasaban a retirar libros ya que realizan venta online.

Entre las personas que visitaron el espacio estuvo Max Mirelmann https://www.instagram.com/maxmpaisajismo/ un cliente y amigo de la casa, con quien comenzamos hablando de libros, sobre nuestros antepasados inmigrantes y me enteré que filmó un corto basado en un diario y filmaciones que pertenecieron a su padre.

While I was there the movement was continuous, many people came to consult about some titles or to pick up books since they sell online.

Among the people who visited the space was Max Mirelmann https://www.instagram.com/maxmpaisajismo/, a client and friend of the house, with whom we started talking about books, about our immigrant ancestors and I learned that he filmed a short film based on a journal and tapes that belonged to his father.

Estas son las cosas mágicas que ocurren en las librerías independientes donde el contacto entre quienes las atienden y quienes la visitan es directo generando un espacio de buenos y espontáneos intercambios.
