One of the first things I do when I arrive in a new city is to search for independent bookstores in the area. That’s how I discovered Rare Finds Bookstore and Cafe https://www.instagram.com/rarefindscafe/ just a few blocks from the hotel where we stayed in Chiang Mai.

Una de las primeras cosas que hago al llegar a una nueva ciudad es buscar las librerías independientes de la zona. Así fue como descubrí Rare Finds Bookstore and Cafe https://www.instagram.com/rarefindscafe/ a sólo unas cuadras del hotel donde nos alojamos en Chiang Mai.

When I opened the door, I was greeted by the aroma of coffee, the murmur of girls reading at one of the tables, plants and the warm smile of Phum, who takes care of the place.

Two banners, which frame the place, caught my attention. One with a quote from One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, and the other, which really moved me, with the words of Jorge Luis Borges: “I have always imagined paradise would be a kind of library”. Once again, I confirmed that literature is a bridge that unites us, no matter where in the world we live.

Al abrir la puerta, me recibió el aroma a café, el murmullo de unas chicas leyendo en una de las mesas, plantas y la sonrisa cálida de Phum, quien atiende el lugar.

Dos carteles, que dan marco al lugar, captaron mi atención. Uno con una cita de Cien años de soledad de Gabriel García Márquez, y el otro, que realmente me conmovió, con las palabras de Jorge Luis Borges: «Siempre imaginé que el paraíso sería algún tipo de biblioteca». Una vez más, confirmé que la literatura es un puente que nos une, sin importar de qué parte del mundo vivamos.

Phum told me that, once a month, he organizes a book club with a flexible format: sometimes they discuss books while at other times they write, using different sorts of prompts to do so.

Phum me contó que, una vez al mes, organiza un club de lectura con un formato flexible: algunas veces discuten libros mientras que en otras oportunidades escriben, utilizando distintos tipos de disparadores para hacerlo.

Shortly after appeared Earth, the owner of the bookstore, who, despite being busy, took some time to welcome me and share the history of the place. Rare Finds Bookstore started in Bangkok in 2020, and after moving to Chiang Mai in 2022, decided to close that venue and open this new literary haven in northern Thailand.

Poco después apareció Earth, el dueño de la librería, quien, a pesar de estar ocupado, se tomó un tiempo para recibirme y compartir la historia del lugar. Rare Finds Bookstore comenzó en Bangkok en 2020, y tras mudarse a Chiang Mai en 2022, decidió cerrar aquel espacio y abrir este nuevo refugio literario en el norte de Tailandia.

In addition to books, the store offers cards, t-shirts, ceramics, decorative objects and posters. One in particular caught my eye: “An Anatomical Chart of love pains”, which Earth brought directly from the Museum of Innocence, founded by Orhan Pamuk in Istanbul. We talked about the city and that melancholic tone so characteristic of Pamuk’s books.

Además de libros, la tienda ofrece tarjetas, remeras, cerámicas, objetos de decoración y pósters. Uno en particular llamó mi atención: “An Anatomical Chart of love pains”, que Earth trajo directamente del Museo de la Inocencia, fundado por Orhan Pamuk en Estambul. Conversamos sobre la ciudad y sobre ese tono melancólico tan característico de los libros de Pamuk

And as if that weren’t enough, Nada, Dembe and Annie are part of the bookstore staff, three kittens that wander among the shelves and reminded me of those Turkish bookstores where felines are always curious and part of the scene.

Y como si fuera poco, forman parte del staff de la librería Nada, Dembe y Annie tres gatitos que deambulan entre los estantes y me hicieron recordar aquellas librerías turcas donde los felinos siempre están curiosos formando parte del paisaje.
