On a hot January day, we arranged to meet Cecilia Fanti https://www.instagram.com/fanticecilia/writer and owner of Céspedes Libros https://www.instagram.com/cespedeslibros/, to talk about this independent bookstore that opened its doors in 2017 in the Colegiales neighborhood.

Lo que comenzó como una entrevista sobre el nacimiento de Céspedes Libros se convirtió, casi sin darnos cuenta, en una conversación íntima sobre la enfermedad y la muerte de mi mamá. Tal vez el disparador haya sido el libro de Julieta Correa, Por qué son tan lindos los caballos. Aunque soy una convencida de que ciertas charlas sólo pueden suceder en lugares donde el tiempo se pone en pausa, donde hay escucha verdadera, intercambio generoso y recomendaciones que no se limitan a libros, sino que abren puertas a experiencias compartidas. Y Céspedes Libros es un lugar para que eso ocurra.

What started as an interview about the founding of Céspedes Libros turned, almost without realizing it, into an intimate conversation about my mom’s illness and death. Perhaps the trigger was the book Por qué son tan lindos los caballos, by Julieta Correa. Although I am convinced that certain conversations can only happen in places where time is paused, where there is true listening, generous exchange and recommendations that are not limited to books, but open doors to shared experiences. And Céspedes Libros is a place for that to happen.

Hace casi ocho años, Cecilia Fanti dejó un trabajo estable en una editorial para seguir un sueño: abrir su propia librería. No fue una decisión menor. Eligió un pequeño local sobre la calle Céspedes, en el barrio de Colegiales, una zona de calma barrial, más de vecinos que de multitudes. Allí funcionaba una librería que, por sus bajas ventas, estaba a punto de cerrar. Cecilia se animó a tomar el desafío y apostó por ese mismo espacio.

Almost eight years ago, Cecilia Fanti left a steady job in a publishing house to follow a dream: to open her own bookstore. It was not a minor decision. She chose a small shop on Céspedes Street, in the Colegiales neighborhood, an area of quiet neighborhood, more of neighbors than of crowds. There was a bookstore that, due to low sales, was about to close. Cecilia took up the challenge and bet on that same space.

Contra todos los pronósticos; y Cecilia sabe mucho sobre cómo sobreponerse a situaciones adversas (*) la librería no sólo funcionó sino que se consolidó y expandió.

En plena pandemia y luego de muchas refacciones, Céspedes Libros se mudó al local que ocupa actualmente sobre la Avenida Álvarez Thomas 853 convirtiéndose en un punto de encuentro para lectores, autoras y autores y donde se realizan actividades culturales, talleres y presentaciones de libros.

Against all odds; and Cecilia knows a lot about overcoming adverse situations (*) the bookstore not only worked but consolidated and expanded.

In the middle of the pandemic and after many renovations, Céspedes Libros moved to its current location on Avenida Álvarez Thomas 853, becoming a meeting point for readers, authors and where cultural activities, workshops and book presentations are held.

Céspedes Libros es un espacio de referencia por la selección de libros, su catálogo incluye títulos de editoriales como Ediciones Universidad Diego Portales, Hueders, Penguin Random House, Anagrama y Adriana Hidalgo, como así también editoriales independientes.

Cecilia no se detuvo ahí. Hace dos años abrió un segundo local de Céspedes Libros en el Centro Cultural Recoleta. Y a mediados de abril, la historia sumó una nueva página: en la que fue su casa de la infancia, en Blanco Encalada al 1700, en pleno Barrio Chino, la librería abrió su tercer espacio. Cada apertura no es solo una ampliación física, sino la manifestación de una idea que sigue creciendo: la librería como refugio, como punto de encuentro, y como motor de comunidad.

Céspedes Libros is a place of reference for the selection of books, its catalog includes titles from publishers such as Ediciones Universidad Diego Portales, Hueders, Penguin Random House, Anagrama and Adriana Hidalgo, as well as independent publishers.

Cecilia did not stop there. Two years ago she opened a second Céspedes Libros store in the Centro Cultural Recoleta. And in mid-April, the story added a new page: in what was her childhood home, at Blanco Encalada 1700 , in the heart of Chinatown, the bookstore opened its third space. Each opening is not only a physical expansion, but the manifestation of an idea that continues to grow: the bookstore as a refuge, as a meeting point, and as an engine of community.

Céspedes Libros además ha sido reconocida por su labor en la difusión cultural y la creación de comunidad. En 2024, recibió el Premio a la Labor Librera otorgado por la Feria de Editores, destacando su propuesta cultural y actividad comunitaria.

Céspedes Libros has also been recognized for its work in cultural promotion and community development. In 2024, it received the Bookseller’s Work Award granted by the Publishers’ Fair, highlighting its cultural proposal and community activity.

Durante nuestra charla, Cecilia mencionó algo que se me pareció muy interesante relacionado al tiempo. Tiempo para leer, para habitar las historias, para dejarnos tocar por ellas. Yo agrego: tiempo para que los proyectos florezcan, para escucharnos, para crear y compartir.

Gracias Ceci, por tu tiempo, tu energía, tu valentía al apostar por la cultura  y por seguir abriendo puertas a través de los libros.

During our talk, Cecilia mentioned something that I found very interesting related to time. Time to read, to inhabit the stories, to let ourselves be touched by them. I add: time for projects to flourish, to listen to each other, to create and share.
