Portland, Oregon

It’s located in 2724 NE Alberta St, a vibrant neighborhood where other bookstores like Monograph Bookwerks, Parallel Worlds Bookshop, and Melville Books coexist alongside galleries such as Blind Insect, Talon Gallery and a variety of restaurants.

The shop, with its large windows and a bicycle parked out front, greeted me with a warm and inviting atmosphere. There I met Robin Wheelright, the owner and creator of the space, with whom I was able to chat a little in Spanish since she lived in Spain years ago.

Inside, the space is bright and airy: shelves with both new and used books, a beautifully set dining table as if awaiting guests, aprons hanging, and tables with pots, pans, and utensils.

In a small kitchen equipped with a counter and stovetop, cooking classes take place: Robin chooses a cookbook with a specific theme, selects some recipes, and shops for seasonal ingredients at local markets. Participants—no more than ten people—help prepare the meal, which is then shared together in an intimate, relaxed setting.

Robin told me she opened the bookstore in December 2021, but her connection to the culinary world goes back much further. In 2016 she opened Vivienne as a restaurant specializing in breakfast and brunch, which she ran in Portland’s Hollywood neighborhood from 2016 until 2021 when she changed it to the bookstore. Vivienne Culinary Books moved to Alberta in 2024.

Vivienne Culinary Books is well worth a visit: a place to browse unique cookbooks, discover kitchenware and wines, and experience where the love of food and books come together.

Many thanks to Robin for the conversation, time and her warmth. Let’s keep supporting independent bookstores.
