No se si te pasa lo mismo, pero para mi Sicilia significaba la película El Padrino, con Michael Corleone yéndose al exilio luego de haberse cargado a Solozzo y al Capitàn McKlusky (qué escena tremenda la de ese restaurant) y ni que hablar la de la pobre Apollonia que se le dio por poner en marcha el auto listo para Michael … es una película que se estrenó en 1972 así que no me culpes por espoilearla 🙂

I don’t know if it’s the same for you, but for me Sicily meant the movie The Godfather, with Michael Corleone going into exile after having killed Solozzo and Captain McKlusky (what a tremendous scene in that restaurant) and not to mention the poor Apollonia who started the car ready for Michael … it’s a movie that was released in 1972 so don’t blame me for spoiling it 🙂

Todos esos pensamientos cambiaron cuando puse un pie en esta isla preciosa, la cual fue conquistada por griegos, romanos, turcos y catalanes entre otros. Todos dejando algo de su legado a su paso.

Al momento de planificar el viaje pensamos en recorrerla toda, sin embargo nos dimos cuenta que es una isla demasiado grande y con mucho para ver y como queríamos recorrerla con calma, disfrutando de cada lugar y es por eso que decidimos recorrer solamente el sudoeste de la misma.

At the time of planning the trip we thought we would go all over it, however we realized that it is a very big island with a lot to see and we wanted to go around it calmly, enjoying each place and that is why we decided to go just the southwest

Llegamos al aeropuerto de Catania, que es la segunda ciudad más importante luego de su capital Palermo y fiel al estilo italiano todo era un caos. Alquilamos un auto y partimos hacia la bellísima Taormina, ubicada sobre la montaña y con vistas que te dejan embelesado.

Nos instalamos en el bed and breakfast Rocca Castello, un lugar preparado para recibir solo a uno o dos visitantes y sus anfitriones Umberto y Phillip nos hicieron sentir como si estuviéramos en nuestra casa. Para que veas que no exagero en lo más mínimo te muestro la vista que teníamos desde el jardín. Por la mañana preparaban un desayuno de reyes con el que perfectamente podías saltear el almuerzo. Un lugar para volver a visitar 🙂

We arrived at the airport in Catania, which is the second most important city after its capital Palermo, and true to Italian style, everything was in chaos. We rented a car and left for the beautiful Taormina, located on the mountain and with breathtaken views.

We settled in at the Rocca Castello bed and breakfast, a place prepared to receive only one or two visitors and your hosts Umberto and Phillip made us feel as if we were at home. To show you that I am not exaggerating in the least I show you the view we had from the garden. In the morning they prepared a breakfast of kings with which you could perfectly skip lunch. A place to come back 🙂

Desde la zona del Noroeste de Estados Unidos hacia Sicilia tuvimos una diferencia horaria de 9 horas, así que el jet lag nos pegó bastante fuerte así también como el calor, junio es abrasador. Por lo tanto nos tomamos el día con mucha calma recorrimos los alrededores de Taormina, que es bellísima y luego cenamos en un lugar sencillo pero de primer nivel con la comida en Trattoria Don Camillo.

From the northwestern United States to Sicily we had a 9 hour time difference, so the jet lag hit us pretty hard as well as the heat, June is scorching. So we took the day very easy, toured around Taormina, which is beautiful, and then had dinner at a simple but first class place with the food at Trattoria Don Camillo.

Al día siguiente como hacía muchísimo calor fuimos a la playa al Lido La Pigna, ir al mar fue la mejor opción para un día para derretirse. Allí nos instalamos en nuestras reposeras y pasamos un día muy tranquilo. Algo para tener en cuenta a la hora de darte un chapuzón es que el fondo del mar es de piedras asi que lleva algún calzado si no queres lastimarte los pies.

Entre algunas curiosidades en el menú siciliano encontré pasta y también pizza «a la norma» que es una preparación con ricota (uno de los pocos quesos que tolero) pero en este caso es tan fuerte que si sos de los de la minoría que el queso no es lo tuyo, evitalo… haceme caso 🙂

The next day as it was very hot we went to the beach at Lido La Pigna, going to the sea was the best option for a day to melt. There we settled in our lounge chairs and spent a very quiet day. Something to keep in mind when going for a dip is that the sea bottom is made of stones so wear some shoes if you don’t want to hurt your feet.

Among some curiosities in the Sicilian menu I found pasta and also pizza «a la norma» which is a preparation with ricotta (one of the few cheeses I tolerate) but in this case it is so strong that if you are one of the minority that cheese is not your thing, avoid it… take my advice 🙂

Al atardecer fuimos a caminar por el Teatro Antico de Taormina, unas ruinas inmensas en el medio de la pequeña ciudad. Estaban preparando todo para el Taormina Film Festival que iba a tener lugar una semana después de nuestra estadía https://filmfreeway.com/TaorminaFilmFest. Menos mal que no fue en la misma semana porque no hubiese querido opacar la belleza de Nicole Kidman 😉

In the evening we went for a walk around the Teatro Antico of Taormina, huge ruins in the middle of the small town. They were preparing everything for the Taormina Film Festival that was going to take place a week after our stay https://filmfreeway.com/TaorminaFilmFest. Good thing it wasn’t in the same week because I wouldn’t have wanted to overshadow Nicole Kidman’s beauty 😉

Es muy interesante la combinación de lo antiguo del teatro griego, como también se lo conoce, con todo lo moderno de pantallas del cine actual, muy bello contraste. Fue un día con muchas nubes así que fue imposible ver el Etna desde allí. Lo que puedo asegurarte es que se respira historia en esta ciudad.

It is very interesting the combination of the ancient Greek theater, as it is also known, with all the modern screens of today’s cinema, very beautiful contrast. It was a very cloudy day so it was impossible to see Etna from there. What I can assure you is that you can breathe history in this city.

Nos despedimos de Umberto y Phillip y continuamos hacia Piazza Armerina, especificamente a la Villa Romana del Casale que tiene una coleccion de mosaicos en algunos casos impecables, no es segura su fecha de construcción pero estaría alrededor del fin del 200 y principio del 300 de nuestra era. Así que ver que algunos sectores estén en tan buena forma es una sorpresa inmensa. Uno de los mosaicos más famosos es el comunmente llamado «el de las chicas en bikini» ( en realidad es Dieci Ragazze)… habrán sido las precursoras de la moda del dos piezas? la verdad es que las chicas están entrenando para alguna competencia de atletismo… al menos es eso lo que parece.

We said goodbye to Umberto and Phillip and continued to Piazza Armerina, specifically to the Villa Romana del Casale which has a collection of mosaics in some cases impeccable, it is not certain its date of construction but it would be around the end of 200 and beginning of 300 AD. So to see that some sectors are in such good shape is a huge surprise. One of the most famous mosaics is the one commonly called «the one with the girls in bikinis» (actually it is Dieci Ragazze)… they must have been the precursors of the two-piece fashion… the truth is that the girls are training for some athletics competition… at least that’s what it looks like.

Desde aquí seguimos viaje hacia Kamarina y paramos en el lugar Kamarina Land, la llegada fue una completa desilución veníamos de un lugar precioso, super encantador y llegamos a un lugar algo raro. Una playa bastante bonita pero el camino hacia allí estaba lleno de construcciones abandonadas que daban un poco de miedo.

La casa que elegimos para instalarnos era muy simple pero la amabilidad de los anfitriones hicieron que todo fuera maravilloso. Algo para destacar de este viaje es la gente que mientras que no esté al frente de un volante es maravillosa, la comida que es deliciosa y los vinos que son muy especiales porque hay muchos terruños volcánicos y eso hace que las uvas sean distintas y con un sabor totalmente diferente.

Al día siguiente, nuevamente el calor apretaba así que fuimos primero a la playa y estuvo realmente precioso ahi el mar tenía su fondo de arena y el agua estaba a la temperatura ideal. También nos tomamos un ratito para almorzar en la playa, pescadito fresco y probar algo digestivo como el amaro, con sus miles de sabores, el fernet por ejemplo , es uno de ellos.

From here we continued our journey to Kamarina and stopped at the place Kamarina Land, the arrival was a complete disappointment we came from a beautiful place, super charming and we arrived at a somewhat strange place. A pretty nice beach but the road there was full of abandoned buildings that were a little scary.

The house we chose to settle in was very simple but the kindness of the hosts made everything wonderful. Something to highlight of this trip is the people that while not in front of a steering wheel are wonderful, the food that is delicious and the wines that are very special because there are many volcanic terroirs and that makes the grapes different and with a totally different taste.

The next day, it was hot again so we went to the beach first and it was really beautiful there, the sea had a sandy bottom and the water was at the ideal temperature. We also took some time to have lunch on the beach, fresh fish and try something digestive like amaro, with its thousands of flavors, fernet for example, is one of them.
