La semana pasada tuve la suerte de que Joaquín Castro https://www.instagram.com/buenosaires.alpaso/ me invitara a conocer y disfrutar de una visita guiada en la Fundación Clorindo Testa https://www.instagram.com/fundacionclorindotesta/ ubicada en la esquina de Santa Fe y Callao en Barrio Norte, en Buenos Aires.

La magia comenzó al subir en uno de esos ascensores elegantes y lentos (que todavía se conservan en algunos edificios de la ciudad) y que te permiten ir mirando las escaleras que lo rodean a medida que vas subiendo o bajando. Una manera de ir entrando poco a poco en el mundo artístico de Clorindo Testa.

Last week I was lucky to be invited by Joaquín Castro https://www.instagram.com/buenosaires.alpaso/ to visit and enjoy a guided tour at the Clorindo Testa Foundation https://www.instagram.com/fundacionclorindotesta/ located on the corner of Santa Fe and Callao in Barrio Norte in Buenos Aires.

The magic started when going up in one of those elegant and slow elevators (which are still preserved in some buildings of the city) and that allow you to look at the stairs that surround it as you go up or down. A way to enter little by little into the artistic world of Clorindo Testa.

Al llegar al sexto piso, María, nuestra anfitriona, nos recibió en el que fuera el estudio de Clorindo Testa desde el año 1970 hasta su fallecimiento en 2013.

Fue cruzar la puerta y sentir el encanto del lugar, quizás dado por la elección de colores primarios que destacan y resaltan cada espacio, mostrando los diversos intereses a lo largo de la vida de Testa. Todo esto acompañado por la luminosidad de la tarde que entraba por sus ventanales.

O quizás por el silencio (algo que el Maestro apreciaba para poder pensar) que reinaba en esos ambientes a pesar de estar en una de las esquinas más ruidosas de la ciudad.

When we arrived on the sixth floor, María, our hostess, welcomed us into what was Clorindo Testa’s studio from 1970 until his death in 2013.

It was crossing the door and feeling the charm of the place, perhaps given by the choice of primary colors that highlight and emphasize each space, showing the various interests throughout Testa’s life. All this accompanied by the brightness of the afternoon that entered through its windows

Or perhaps because of the silence (something that the Master appreciated to be able to think) that reigned in these environments despite being in one of the noisiest corners of the city.

Me fascinó ver la mesa de trabajo de Clorindo Testa con materiales desparramados como esperándolo para que continuara con alguno de sus proyectos. Su presencia todavía se respira en su estudio.

Me doy cuenta que comencé a hablarte de Clorindo Testa sin haberlo presentado ☺️.

Clorindo Testa nació en Nápoles, Italia hace exactamente 100 años, pero vivió en Buenos Aires y obtuvo su diploma de arquitecto en la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Entre sus diseños están la Biblioteca Nacional, la sede central del Banco Hipotecario (que en su origen fue el Banco de Londres y América del Sur), el Centro Cultural Recoleta, el Hospital Naval Dr. Pedro Mallo y el Panteón del Cementerio de la Chacarita . Y un detalle no menor es que todas sus obras fueron ganadas por concurso.

I realize that I started talking to you about Clorindo Testa without having introduced him ☺️.

Clorindo Testa was born in Naples, Italy exactly 100 years ago, but he lived in Buenos Aires and graduated as an architect from the University of Buenos Aires. Among his designs are the National Library, the headquarters of the Banco Hipotecario (originally the Bank of London and South America), the Recoleta Cultural Center, the Dr. Pedro Mallo Naval Hospital and the Pantheon of the Chacarita Cemetery. And a not minor detail is that all his works were won by contest.

Su arquitectura por su estilo brutalista, caracterizado por el uso de mucho hormigón y líneas angulares, no ha dejado a nadie indiferente. Fue (y es) muy celebrado pero también muy criticado.

Cuando leí una frase de Clorindo Testa pintada en la sala donde se encuentran varias maquetas de edificios no construídos, me hizo pensar que él era un hombre de convicciones pero que además se divertía con lo que hacía y eso me pareció muy inspirador.

«Mal puedo arrepentirme de algunas de mis obras ya que casi todas ellas las gané por concurso. Me gusta presentarme a ellos. Se gana y se pierde, pero en todos su desarrollo me divierto mucho. Esto es muy importante: divertirse con lo que uno hace».

Its architecture for its brutalist style, characterized by the use of a lot of concrete and angular lines, has left nobody indifferent. It was (and is) much celebrated but also much criticized

When I read a phrase of Clorindo Testa painted in the room where there are several models of unbuilt buildings, it made me think that he was a man of convictions but also had fun with what he was doing and I found that very inspiring.

«I can hardly regret some of my works since I won almost all of them through contests. I like to enter them. You win and you lose, but in all of them I have a lot of fun. This is very important: to have fun with what you do».

La visita a la Fundación me permitió descubrir aspectos de la vida de Clorindo Testa que desconocía, como su interés por coleccionar modelos de barcos y máscaras africanas y de la India. Lo curioso es que elegía estas máscaras no por su valor comercial, sino por una razón más simple: le gustaban o no.

The visit to the Foundation allowed me to discover aspects of Clorindo Testa’s life that were unknown to me, such as his interest in collecting model ships and African and Indian masks. The curious thing is that he chose these masks not for their commercial value, but for a simpler reason: whether he liked them or not.

Otro aspecto que desconocía era su faceta como pintor, pero lo interesante es que, de alguna manera, lo arquitectónico estaba siempre presente en su arte.

Another aspect I was unaware of was his painting facet, but the interesting thing is that, somehow, the art.

Es imposible no conmoverse al ver expuestos los planos que realizó para la Biblioteca Nacional como así también rollos de planos con proyectos que fueron presentados en diferentes concursos. Te encontrás con mucha historia de la ciudad de Buenos Aires y la Fundación está haciendo un gran trabajo para documentarlo y compartirlo con quienes estén interesados.

It is impossible not to be moved when you see on display the plans he made for the National Library as well as rolls of plans with projects that were presented in different contests. You will find a lot of history of the city of Buenos Aires and the Foundation is doing a great job to document it and share it with those who are interested.

¡Sugestiva experiencia el recorrido por el Estudio de Clorindo Testa!

Las pinturas y esculturas de su autoría invitan a reflexionar sobre la vida en la ciudad y sobre los avances de la humanidad. La transformación del espacio, el uso de la ciencia y de las tecnologias muchas veces se hace de manera irracional y, simplememte, nos acomodamos casi sin darnos cuenta.

The tour of Clorindo Testa’s Studio is a suggestive experience!

His paintings and sculptures invite us to reflect on life in the city and on the progress of humanity. The transformation of space, the use of science and technology is often done in an irrational way and, simply, we accommodate ourselves almost without realizing it.

His work table, which preserves his everyday objects: notebooks, glasses, rulers, pencils, magnifying glasses, sketches, etc., allow us to discover a little more about the personality of Clorindo Testa, architect, creator of emblematic brutalist buildings and artist, with a critical view of life in the city and of ourselves. https://www.instagram.com/portasmaria/

Tuve la oportunidad de visitar la Fundación Clorindo Testa y allí pude asomarme al fantástico mundo de este artista.

Descubrí un personaje polifacético que no solo fue un gran arquitecto con estilo propio, si no también, un pintor de trayectoria, además de dibujante y diseñador. 

Estar en su estudio, mirar por la ventana y ver lo mismo que él, observar su escritorio con los objetos que lo rodearon y acompañaron a diario, resultó una experiencia muy interesante que me hizo pensar en el misterio del proceso creativo y de ese viaje personal que realiza todo artista en busca de su propio lenguaje estético. 

Descubrí un espíritu inquieto, creativo e innovador que disfrutaba de todo lo que hacia. Y de esto no quedan dudas ya que, en la pared de una de las habitaciones, se puede leer: «Esto es muy importante: divertirse con lo que uno hace». I had the opportunity to visit the Clorindo Testa Foundation and there I was able to peek into the fantastic world of this artist.

I discovered a versatile character who was not only a great architect with his own style, but also a painter of trajectory, as well as a drawer and designer.

Being in his studio, looking out the window and seeing the same things he did, observing his desk with the objects that surrounded him and accompanied him on a daily basis, was a very interesting experience that made me think about the mystery of the creative process and the personal journey that every artist makes in search of his own aesthetic language.

I discovered a restless, creative and innovative spirit who enjoyed everything he did. And of this there is no doubt, since, on the wall of one of the rooms, you can read: «This is very important: have fun with what you do».
