Elliott Bay Book Company was founded by Walter Carr in 1973. Its first location was in Pioneer Square and has witnessed more than five decades of literary and cultural history in Seattle.

Elliott Bay Book Company was one of the first bookstores to bring renowned authors to the Pacific Northwest region, organizing book tours that did not usually include this area in their itinerary. It was also the first to open a café within a bookstore in Seattle, a concept that is very common today, but was innovative at the time.

Since 2010 Elliott Bay Company has been located in the Capitol Hills neighborhood.

Elliott Bay Company has been the scene of countless literary activities, from readings to meetings with authors, consolidating itself as a center of the city’s cultural life. It has also hosted Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton, Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell. And in the artistic and literary world, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, Anne Rice, Annie Liebovitz, Raymond Carver and David Sedaris . All this underlines its importance not only as a bookstore, but also as a point of reference in the country’s cultural community.

Seattle is known for its cloudy skies and frequent rain, but on the evening of my visit the day was sunny and warm. I thought that, given the weather conditions, there would be few people in the bookstore. Big mistake! 🙂 Despite the weather, Elliott Bay Book Company was full of visitors. The large windows allowed sunlight to flood the spacious interior as people checked out the bookshelves and tables.

The bookstore has several mezzanines that offer quiet corners, where you can sit at tables with chairs and read in comfort. In addition, the café inside the store adds a cozy feeling, turning the bookstore into a warm and inviting space, perfect for spending the day among books.

To learn a little more about Elliott Bay Book Company and its activities, I approached Wes, one of the employees, who very kindly and enthusiastically told me that almost every day the bookstore organizes activities such as poetry readings or book presentations. He also told me about Elliott Bay Book Company’s three book groups.

Elliott Bay Book Group meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm and is focused on fiction and nonfiction book discovery.

The Global Issues Book Group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm and discussion topics relate to the vital political, economic, environmental and social issues challenging humanity in the 21st century.

Speculations Sci-Fi & Fantasy Book Group .As the literature of ideas and imagination, science fiction and fantasy make excellent fodder for engaging discussion. Speculations celebrates the genre by exploring the whole arc from hard science to fantastical fiction and anything in between. The Speculations Sci-Fi & Fantasy Book Group meets the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

In addition to books, Elliott Bay also has a large stationery section with items ranging from cards, pens, notebooks, calendars to logo bags and t-shirts with their logo.

Another activity that I found interesting is the Blind Date with a book. By subscribing each month you receive a book with the possibility of exchanging it in case you have already read it. I think it’s a good idea to know new authors or themes and at the same time get surprised.

As of 2022 Joey Burgess and Murf Hall, entrepreneurs, neighborhood advocates and spouses, along with Tracy Taylor, CEO of Elliott Bay, became the new owners of Elliott Bay Book Company following the retirement of Peter Aaron who had owned it since 1999.

The history and mystique continues and Elliott Bay Book Company remains a cultural bastion in Seattle. Let’s support independent bookstores.
