Hood River, Oregon, USA

I met Heidi Cardoza https://www.instagram.com/hrcphotographyoregon/ a photographer from Hood River, at the Washougal Songcraft Festival held in August. I was struck by her amazing photos of animals and birds of the Pacific Northwest. The precision in detail and patience to capture the exact moment fascinated me. I wanted to know more about her work, so I invited her to participate in Artistic Friends to share her story with us. So now I leave you with her own words.

I was a fan of taking photos at a young age and had a cheap point and shoot camera with film that I’d carry around and snap just about anything, but my pets were pretty popular subjects most of the time 😉

I then signed up for a photography class in high school and really loved it! Again everything was my subject and there I started to learn about processing and dark rooms, etc.

I didn’t go to college right away, but some years later I started taking classes at a community college and signed up for their photography class. I had a great female teacher, and her enthusiasm for all things photography was contagious! Because actual film was popular, and I really liked the developing part, I did a lot of black and white photos

I loved nature photography during that time so I focused a lot on that. I dreamed of my own dark room and I would spend as much time as I could at the school’s dark room, it was magical to me. Life happened, some years passed, and the photography learning part took a bit of a back seat for me, but my camera was never far away. I also purchased my first digital camera during that time and did a lot of teaching myself on hikes, camping trips, and travels.

I have been a wildlife lover and a huge bird nerd for many years, and had been taking online classes to gain as much information about birds as I could. Then the world really slowed down with covid and it was then that I started to take my camera and big lens with me on hikes with no worry about having much other things to do. I found that I was really drawn to wildlife and seemed to see a lot of the birds I had been studying and it was so much fun to photograph them! I was hooked and was going out many times a week to different spots in the gorge area just to see what I could find. When some friends saw what I was doing they suggested I start doing something with my photos and I did just that! It truly has been such a dream come true, to take a hobby that I have loved for so many years, and find some way to share it and have a little business too.

I take photos everywhere I travel too, but my main focus, especially for my business, is the Columbia River Gorge, both sides of the river. We have so much cool stuff here!

My primary focus is on wildlife, but every once in a while a beautiful landscape grabs my attention and I can’t pass that up 🙂

With my photography I make greeting cards, a yearly calendar, prints and canvas prints in varying sizes, coasters, journals, glass plates, it’s the great part about photography, you can create and have it printed on so many different items, and it’s fun to try many of them and see how they turn out!

I do some custom work for some farms/orchards, taking photos for them and then creating custom cards and postcards for their stores.

I have my cards in a few stores around town, and I do quite a bit of work for the Hood River Lavender Farm where they carry a lot of my products in their gift store.

Something else about me: I love animals and in return they bring me so much joy 😊

I do some animal rescue and bring home critters that need some extra love that others just don’t have time for anymore.

I have a box turtle I acquired almost 30 years ago that had been dumped at a pet store in a shoe box, who knew Lucy, her name, would still be with me! 🐢🤣

Then I have 2 leopard geckos that were given to me, 3 male zebra finches from the humane society, and two parakeets that I adopted that the owners no longer wanted. On top of that menagerie, I have a Cockatiel, Penny, and Aspen our Dachshund, who both travel in our van everywhere with us!

Aspen ❤️
Penny ❤️

I want to thank Heidi Cardoza for her participation in Artistic Friends for her good energy and also for her beautiful photographs.
