In the heart of London, tucked away on Cecil Court—a pedestrian passage that feels frozen in time, filled with specialized bookshops and antique dealers—I stumbled upon Marchpane https://www.instagram.com/marchpanebooks/, a bookstore that immediately caught my eye with its window display. There was something about its vintage charm, that carefully curated nostalgic air, that made me stop.

En el corazón de Londres, oculta en Cecil Court, un pasaje peatonal que parece detenido en el tiempo, con librerías especializadas y anticuarios, me encontré con Marchpane https://www.instagram.com/marchpanebooks/, una librería que llamó mi atención desde la vidriera. Había algo en su estética vintage, ese aire nostálgico tan bien cuidado, que me hizo detenerme.

Upon entering the small shop, I found piles of children’s books from all eras. I soon learned that Marchpane holds one of the largest collections of Alice in Wonderland: editions in different languages, illustrated by a wide range of artists, and from across the decades. A true feast for curious minds and collectors alike.

Al entrar a un local pequeño pero pilas de libros infantiles de todas las épocas. The most fascinating part was witnessing what felt like a scene from a play: a man speaking with two visitors, passionately showing them rare books and sharing stories. I asked if I could listen in, and ended up immersed in a fascinating narrative about old editions—and even had the chance to hold a book with a bronze cover in my hands. I later discovered that this enthusiastic storyteller was Dr. Matthew Eve: writer, historian, collector, curator of antique children’s books, and manager of Marchpane. A true scholar and a passionate expert on the literary and publishing world. One of those people who make you fall in love with what they do.

Fue fascinante encontrarme con una escena casi teatral: un hombre conversaba con dos personas, mostrándoles libros raros y contando historias con pasión. Pedí permiso para sumarme, y así fue como terminé escuchando un relato lleno de datos sobre ediciones antiguas (y hasta tuve la suerte de tener en mis manos un ejemplar con su tapa de bronce). Más tarde supe que ese narrador entusiasta era el Dr. Matthew Eve, escritor, historiador, coleccionista, curador de libros infantiles antiguos y manager de Marchpane. Founded in August 1989, Marchpane has since become one of the most unique places in London to find rare children’s books, first editions, original illustrations, and paper treasures that can’t be found anywhere else.
