A few years ago, while looking through a magazine about the Pacific Northwest, I came across the story of John Furniss https://www.instagram.com/theblindwoodsman/, an artist from Washougal who works with wood. What makes him special is that John is blind, yet he still manages to create pieces with a precision and beauty that moved me. In 2024, when I began writing about independent bookstores, his name popped up again unexpectedly: I discovered that during Portland Book Week https://www.instagram.com/portlandbookweek/, The Blind Woodman, the book John wrote with his wife and partner, artist Anni Furniss https://www.instagram.com/annifurnissart/, aka Honeybee, was being presented at a bookstore in Vancouver.
And so I ended up at White Oak Books https://www.instagram.com/whiteoakbooksllc/, the bookstore founded in November 2023 by Sara and Peter Glavin. Let’s just say I found the perfect excuse to combine my two passions: books and art.
As soon as I walked into White Oak Books, I was struck by the variety of genres on offer, ranging from new releases to comics, poetry, essays, and children’s literature. Sara, as curator of the catalog, has prioritized a diverse selection that includes feminist studies, indigenous and gender issues, reflecting her desire to represent an inclusive perspective. In addition, there is a selection made by the staff with recommendations and notes on the different shelves.
Book clubs are a central part of White Oak Books’ identity: every month, different groups meet to discuss a variety of topics. In addition, book presentations transform the bookstore into a true meeting place for writers, readers, and curious locals.
The community response was so positive that, in May 2025, they opened an extension to the premises. This new space allowed them to host more events, clubs, and exhibitions, further strengthening their role as a cultural center in Vancouver.
This expansion is noticeable in the size of the shelves and the ease with which one can move around the store, taking the time not only to browse books but also to explore the stationery, games, puzzles, and small gifts sections, which make the visit even more enjoyable.
White Oak Books is an essential stop in Vancouver, a city that continues to grow and surprise. Thank you very much, Sara and Peter, for opening the doors to this space that is so vital to the community. Let’s continue to support independent bookstores.

Hace unos años, hojeando una revista del Pacífico Noroeste, me encontré con la historia de John Furniss https://www.instagram.com/theblindwoodsman/, un artista de Washougal que trabaja en madera. La particularidad es que John es ciego, y aun así logra que cada pieza tenga una precisión y una belleza que me conmovieron. Y así fue que llegué a White Oak Books https://www.instagram.com/whiteoakbooksllc/ la librería fundada en noviembre del 2023 por Sara y Peter Glavin Digamos que encontré la excusa perfecta para cruzar mis dos pasiones: los libros y el arte.
Apenas entré a White Oak Books me sorprendió la variedad de géneros que van desde novedades literarias hasta cómics, poesía, ensayo y literatura infantil. Sara, como curadora del catálogo, privilegió una oferta diversa que incluye estudios feministas, cuestiones indígenas y de género, reflejo de su deseo de representar una mirada inclusiva. Además está la selección hecha por el staff con recomendaciones y notas en las diferentes estanterías.
Los clubes de lectura son parte fundamental de la identidad de White Oak Books : cada mes se reúnen distintos grupos alrededor de temáticas diversas. A eso se suman las presentaciones de libros, que transforman la librería en un verdadero punto de encuentro para escritores, lectores y curiosos de la zona.
La respuesta de la comunidad fue tan buena que, en mayo de 2025, inauguraron una ampliación del local. Ese nuevo espacio les permitió dar más lugar a eventos, clubes y exhibiciones, reforzando aún más su papel como centro cultural de Vancouver.
Este crecimiento es notable, en la amplitud de las estanterías y en la comodidad con la que uno puede moverse dentro del local tomándose el tiempo no solo mirando libros sino también en las secciones de papelería, juegos, puzzles y pequeños regalos que hacen que la visita se vuelva todavía más entretenida.
