Llegué a la Librería Tasso en una segunda visita a la ciudad de Sorrento de la que me enamoré apenas puse un pie en el 2016. Mucho antes de que las librerías independientes se convirtieran en una parte esencial de mis viajes.
Su nombre rinde homenaje a Torquato Tasso, poeta que nació en Sorrento en 1544, aunque mi primera asociación estuvo relacionada con el Centro Cultural Torquato Tasso de Buenos Aires, donde tantas veces fui a escuchar música.
Al entrar me recibieron Angela y su hija Sara a quienes les hablé sobre mi recorrido por las librerías independientes en una mezcla de italiano, inglés y muchos gestos que terminaron haciéndonos reír. Una vez más comprobé que, cuando hay ganas de entenderse siempre se encuentra la manera.
Me contaron que la librería nació en septiembre de 1987 por iniciativa del editor Franco Di Mauro, quien decidió abrir un espacio en el centro histórico de Sorrento dedicado a la historia local y la narrativa. Seis años más tarde le pasó la posta a su hijo Stefano, que junto a Angela hicieron crecer el proyecto familiar incorporando literatura infantil y juvenil, narrativa en otros idiomas para los turistas que visitan la región y además una selección de libros sobre Sorrento, Pompeya, Capri y la Costa Amalfitana.
Con el tiempo la librería siguió creciendo. En 2013 abrieron un segundo local de 150 metros cuadrados en la Piazza Angelina Lauro, un espacio dedicado a la educación y la cultura, inspirado en Malala Yousafzai, donde hoy organizan presentaciones de libros, talleres, encuentros y actividades de lectura para chicos.
Mientras tanto, Stefano atendía clientes, acomodaba libros, respondía preguntas y saludaba a quienes entraban. Estaba tan ocupado que fue imposible lograr una foto los cuatro juntos.
Antes de despedirnos, Angela y Sara me hicieron prometer que volvería para celebrar los cuarenta años de la librería que festejará el año próximo. Una buena excusa para volver 🙂

I arrived at the Libreria Tasso on my second visit to the city of Sorrento, which I fell in love with the moment I set foot there in 2016—long before independent bookstores became an essential part of my travels.
Its name honours Torquato Tasso, a poet born in Sorrento in 1544, although my first association with it was with the Centro Cultural Torquato Tasso in Buenos Aires, where I went so many times to listen to music.
When I walked in, Angela and her daughter Sara welcomed me, and I told them about my tour of independent bookstores in a mix of Italian, English, and lots of gestures that ended up making us laugh. Once again, I realized that when there’s a desire to understand one another, you always find a way.
They told me that the bookstore was founded in September 1987 on the initiative of publisher Franco Di Mauro, who decided to open a space in the historic center of Sorrento dedicated to local history and fiction. Six years later, he passed the torch to his son Stefano, who, together with Angela, expanded the family business by adding children’s and young adult literature, fiction in other languages for tourists visiting the region, and a selection of books on Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast.
Over time, the bookstore continued to grow. In 2013, they opened a second location—150 square meters—in Piazza Angelina Lauro, a space dedicated to education and culture, inspired by Malala Yousafzai, where they now host book presentations, workshops, gatherings, and reading activities for children.
Meanwhile, Stefano was assisting customers, arranging books, answering questions, and greeting people as they came in. He was so busy that it was impossible to get a photo of the four of us together.
Before we said goodbye, Angela and Sara made me promise that I’d come back to celebrate the bookstore’s 40th anniversary, which will be next year. A good excuse to come back 🙂
