Mi nombre es María Augusta Alvarez,
como la mayoría de artistas, descubrí mi vocación artística en la infancia. He actuado, bailado, modelado cerámica y pintado desde muy pequeña. Tuve la
fortuna de aprender con mi talentosa abuela, a quien recuerdo siempre con
cariño y extraño profundamente. Con el tiempo, desarrollé las técnicas combinando mis actividades académicas y laborales con varios
cursos, talleres y mucha experimentación autodidacta.

A pesar de haber descubierto mi amor por el arte a temprana edad, no fue sino hasta hace pocos meses que me planteé la posibilidad de dedicarme a mi pasión a tiempo completo. Sucedió con el tiempo de pandemia y la cuarentena estricta que todos en el mundo debimos acatar. Encerrada en mi departamento, desempolvé mis pinceles, pinturas y bastidores y me dejé llevar. 

Por primera vez en mi vida tuve la posibilidad de dedicarme durante jornadas enteras a pintar sin presiones. Inmediatamente supe, no sé si de manera consciente o inconsciente, que en adelante no volvería a guardar mis materiales y que me dedicaría a pintar como mi principal actividad. Sentí que no había marcha atrás. 

Despite discovering my love for art at an early age, it wasn’t until a few months ago that I considered the possibility of dedicating myself to my passion full time. It happened with the time of the pandemic and the strict quarantine that everyone in the world had to abide by. Locked up in my apartment, I dusted off my brushes, paints, and frames and let myself go.

For the first time in my life I had the opportunity to dedicate myself for whole days to painting without pressure. Immediately I knew, I do not know if consciously or unconsciously, that from now on I would not save my materials again and that I would dedicate myself to painting as my main activity. I felt there was no turning back.

El proceso ha sido más largo y complejo de lo que se lee. He tenido que superar muchas y variadas dificultades. Siempre quise pintar, pero las circunstancias no fueron las óptimas. Irónicamente en medio de la mayor crisis social, económica, laboral y humana que he vivido, tuve finalmente el coraje para tomar la decisión. La experiencia con la pandemia me hizo recordar la fragilidad y fugacidad de la vida y eso me permitió replantear por completo el  sentido de mi propia vida. 

The process has been longer and more complex than you read. I have had to overcome many and varied difficulties. I always wanted to paint, but the circumstances were not optimal. Ironically in the midst of the greatest social, economic, labor and human crisis I have ever experienced, I finally had the courage to make the decision. The experience with the pandemic made me remember the fragility and transience of life and that allowed me to completely re-establish the meaning of my own life.

Qué pintar 

Pinto de todo un poco, pero prefiero las flores. La decisión surgió en mí de manera bastante natural; amo y admiro la naturaleza, especialmente las flores, y me encanta pintar. Así que, sin pensar mucho al respecto, empecé a pintar algunas de las cientos de flores que he fotografiado en mis caminatas por el parque y paseos al campo. 

What to paint

I paint a bit of everything, but I prefer flowers. The decision came to me quite naturally; I love and admire nature, especially flowers, and I love to paint. So, without thinking much about it, I began to paint some of the hundreds of flowers that I have photographed on my walks in the park and walks in the field.

Pinto con óleos y acrílicos sobre lienzo. Me gustan las texturas y los colores vibrantes que puedo lograr con estos materiales. Prefiero el óleo por su versatilidad, pero aprovecho las ventajas del acrílico respecto a los tiempos de secado. Sigo experimentando técnicas y procuro que cada cuadro que pinto constituya un nuevo reto de diseño, cromática y/o técnica.

I paint with oils and acrylics on canvas. I like the textures and vibrant colors that I can achieve with these materials. I prefer oil for its versatility, but I take advantage of acrylic in terms of drying times. I continue to experiment with techniques and I try to ensure that each painting I paint constitutes a new design, color and / or technical challenge.

Inspiración

Inspiration

Cuando me preguntan qué me inspira me cuesta un poco responder porque me inspira casi todo. En resumen, diría que me inspira la vida. Los brotes que echan raíces, las plantas que dan frutos, los botones que se abren y florecen, los animales y su inagotable ternura e inocencia, el sol, la lluvia, las montañas, la tierra. Amo intensamente la vida en todas sus formas y tamaños. Me inspira la generosa belleza natural que nos rodea y que pocas veces nos detenemos a admirar.   

Por esa razón la primera serie de cuadros que pinté fueron flores silvestres. La pinté como homenaje a todas esas plantas que a menudo nos cruzamos, pero no observamos. 

Por otro lado, admiro y disfruto el arte en todas sus formas. Amo la música, el cine, la literatura, la danza, el teatro, la pintura, la escultura, etc. Admiro a los artistas que han logrado construir su propio lenguaje para transmitir su sentir, frecuentemente incomprendido. Cada libro que he leído, cada cuadro que he admirado, cada obra de arte que me ha tocado ha moldeado un poco mi forma de ser y de sentir.

When they ask me what inspires me, it’s a bit difficult for me to answer because almost everything inspires me. In short, I would say that life inspires me. The shoots that take root, the plants that bear fruit, the buttons that open and flourish, the animals and their inexhaustible tenderness and innocence, the sun, the rain, the mountains, the earth. I intensely love life in all its shapes and sizes. I am inspired by the generous natural beauty that surrounds us and that we rarely stop to admire.

For that reason the first series of paintings were wild flowers. I painted it as a tribute to all those plants that we often pass, but do not observe.

On the other hand, I admire and enjoy art in all its forms. I love music, cinema, literature, dance, theater, painting, sculpture, etc. I admire artists who have managed to build their own language to transmit their feelings, often misunderstood.

Each book that I have read, each painting that I have admired, each work of art that has touched me has shaped my way of being and feelings.

La alegría que me provoca observar la naturaleza y mi profundo respeto por la vida, son las sensaciones que procuro plasmar en mi trabajo. Prefiero el amarillo, el verde y el blanco, pero necesito la variedad de colores a mi alrededor y en mis cuadros. 

Trabajo actual 

Me encuentro desarrollando una segunda serie de cuadros florales con composiciones más complejas y una cromática más variada. Simultáneamente, desarrollo mi trabajo de tesis de maestría en Estudios Culturales. La combinación de estas dos actividades enriquecen mutuamente mi experiencia de vida y mi trabajo. Mi obra se encuentra a la venta en una pequeña tienda-galería en mi ciudad, Quito; y pinto bajo pedido cuando me lo solicitan. The joy that observing nature causes me and my deep respect for life, are the feelings that I try to capture in my work. I prefer yellow, green and white, but I need the variety of colors around me and in my paintings.

Current job

I am developing a second series of floral paintings with more complex compositions and a more varied color scheme. Simultaneously, I am developing my Master’s thesis work in Cultural Studies. The combination of these two activities mutually enrich my life experience and my work.
