Mi nombre es María Alejandra Valdez, pero me dicen Lale y soy de Lima-Perú. Estudié filosofía y desde hace seis años soy profesora de secundaria en un colegio en Lima llamado Los Reyes Rojos. Aprendí a tejer a los siete años; desde entonces siento que es una actividad que me ayuda mucho a ordenar mis emociones y pensamientos. La textura de la lana, los colores, el movimiento y el sonido de los palitos y el crochet me dan mucha calma.

My name is María Alejandra Valdez, people called me Lale and I am from Lima-Perú. I studied philosophy and for the last six years I have been a high school teacher in a school in Lima called Los Reyes Rojos. I learned to knit when I was seven years old; since then I feel that it is an activity that helps me to order my emotions and thoughts. The texture of the wool, the colors, the movement and the sound of the sticks and the crochet give me a lot of calm.

Me gusta tejer mientras converso o mientras veo películas y series, por lo que prefiero hacer mantas y chalinas, que van creciendo de manera casi autónoma. Me gusta pensar en los patrones y las combinaciones de colores que podrían gustarle a la persona a la que le estoy tejiendo algo; en ese sentido, creo que tejer es una forma de dar cariño. 

I like to knit while chatting or while watching movies and series, so I prefer to make blankets and shawls, which grow almost autonomously. I like to think of patterns and color combinations that the person I’m knitting something for might like; in that sense, I think knitting is a way of giving affection. 

Cuando comencé a trabajar en el colegio, abrí un taller de tejido. Fue importante para mi compartir con los alumnos lo que había aprendido y que puedan disfrutar también de ese momento de calma y conversación. En el taller surgió la idea de hacer una “Tejetón”; un encuentro en el que puedan participar también las familias junto con los alumnos y profesores, para tejer cuadrados pequeños que luego se unan para formar mantas.

When I started working at the school, I opened a knitting workshop. It was important for me to share with the students what I had learned and that they could also enjoy this moment of calm and conversation. In the workshop I came up with the idea of making a «Tejetón«; a meeting in which the families could also participate along with the students and teachers, to knit small squares that would later be joined together to form blankets.

Luego de la tejetón, las familias y los profesores nos organizamos para armar las mantas, considerando la composición de los colores para que queden bonitas. El fin del proyecto es enviar estas mantas a las regiones del Perú que pasan mucho frío. Mandamos las mantas junto con una carta de parte de los alumnos, con mensajes y con fotos del día en que todos tejimos juntos. 

After the weaving, the families and teachers organized ourselves to make the blankets, considering the composition of the colors so that they would look beautiful. The purpose of the project is to send these blankets to the regions of Peru that are very cold. We send the blankets along with a letter from the students, with messages and photos of the day we all knitted together. 

La tejetón se ha realizado todos los años desde entonces, salvo en el 2020 por la pandemia. Fue una alegría muy grande poder encontrarnos este año, en un espacio abierto y manteniendo la distancia, para tejer juntos nuevamente. The tejetón has been held every year since then, except in 2020 because of the pandemic. It was a great joy to be able to meet this year, in an open space and keeping the distance, to knit together again.
