Cynthia Mosser @cynthiamosser is one of the artists who will be opening the doors of her art studio for the Clark County Open Studios https://www.facebook.com/artstra.org/ to take place on November 5 and 6 from 10 am to 5 pm.

I am especially interested in this event because I live in Clark County and I feel it is important to support artists in my community.

Estoy especialmente interesada en este evento porque vivo en Clark County y me parece importante darle apoyo a los artistas de mi comunidad.

What attracted me to Cynthia’s artwork were the colors she uses and for that reason I contacted her to invite her to be part of this project and I was delighted that she accepted the proposal 🙂

Lo que me entusiasmó del trabajo artístico de Cynthia fueron los colores que utiliza y por ese motivo me contacté para invitarla a formar parte de este proyecto y tuve la alegría de que aceptara la propuesta 🙂

Cynthia received me one rainy morning in her studio where we talked about her art, what inspires her, her travels and she also showed me details of her work and small notebooks with her sketches. I feel very fortunate and grateful to have had this privilege.

Cynthia me recibió una mañana lluviosa en su estudio donde conversamos sobre su arte, lo que la inspira, sus viajes y además me mostró detalles de su obra y pequeñas libretas con sus borradores. Me siento muy afortunada y agradecida por haber tenido ese privilegio.

I was also able to see boards with inspirational ideas, materials for color testing (something she thoroughly enjoys), artwork that Cynthia is still working on and also a poster with the motto that inspires her:

My mission is to help individuals experience their value while having fun.

También pude ver pizarras con ideas inspiradoras, materiales para hacer pruebas de color (algo que ella disfruta plenamente), obras en las que Cynthia aún está trabajando y además un cartel con el lema que la inspira:

I always knew what I wanted to be when I grew up (an artist), but was too afraid to admit it. My parents, as loving as they were, encouraged me to be practical. I went through college as a pre-med Biology major, and then settled on an Art History major (close, but not quite). After graduation, I experienced many attempts to find work that truly suited me, but nothing felt right. One night, I woke up and knew I had to finally follow my own internal compass: become an artist. The moment my decision was made, I felt different. I felt better. I felt happier. I now help others experience the whimsy and vitality of life through my art.

Siempre supe lo que quería ser cuando fuera grande (artista), pero me daba demasiado miedo admitirlo. Mis padres, por muy cariñosos que hayan sido, me animaron a ser práctica. Pasé por la universidad como estudiante de Biología, y luego me decidí por la carrera de Historia del Arte (casi, pero no del todo). Después de graduarme, intenté muchas veces encontrar un trabajo que realmente adecuado, pero nada me parecía bien. Una noche me desperté y supe que tenía que seguir mi propia brújula interna: convertirme en artista. En el momento en que tomé la decisión, me sentí diferente. Me sentí mejor. Me sentí más feliz. Ahora ayudo a otras personas a experimentar los caprichos y la vitalidad de la vida a través de mi arte.

Some personal elements about my life: I grew up on an acre of land in Portland, Oregon. My memories of the yard, were such that we had to keep at bay the ever-present English ivy, and tend to our grove of Douglas Fir trees, which was essentially a small forest with a trail running through it. Dense groupings of layered plants were always up close, and in my face. My parents had a yearly garden, and despite my true desire to constantly watch TV, they made me go outside, for which I am grateful.

Algunos elementos personales sobre mi vida: crecí en un acre de tierra en Portland, Oregon. Mis recuerdos del patio eran tales que teníamos que mantener a raya la siempre presente hiedra inglesa y cuidar nuestro bosque de abetos de Douglas, que era esencialmente un pequeño bosque con un sendero que lo atravesaba. Las concentraciones de plantas en estratos estaban siempre cerca. Mis padres tenían un jardín anual, y a pesar de mi verdadero deseo de ver constantemente la televisión, me hacían salir, por lo que les estoy agradecido.

More about me: I love cats and their weirdness, succulent plants for their juicy shapes, the color orange for its energy, hiking because it airs out my brain, and stand up paddle boarding which forces me to balance. Finally, thanks to my mountain climbing parents, I’ve climbed four mountains: Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, South Sister and Symmetry Spire (Grand Tetons).

Más sobre mí: Me encantan los gatos y sus rarezas, las plantas suculentas por sus jugosas formas, el color naranja por su energía, el senderismo porque airea mi cerebro, y la tabla de remo que me obliga a mantener el equilibrio. Por último, gracias a mis padres montañistas, he escalado cuatro montañas: Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, South Sister y Symmetry Spire (Grand Tetons).

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am energized by organic, biomorphic forms which appear to converge, connect or float in space. Compositionally, my work has a strong emphasis on shape, color, and pattern, which can create lyrical, visual movement. My goal is to engage the viewer and help them encounter ecstasy, vibrancy and beauty. In other words, to make the viewer feel good through a visual experience.

Colors and structures inherent to plants and animals, as well as architectural and Hungarian folk art designs provide me with endless sources of inspiration. In regard to plants, I am deeply moved by their presence, especially when near a large gathering.

Elliptical shapes (eggs) are my visual refuge owing to their symmetrical/asymmetrical qualities and implicit connection to the idea of potential or renewal. With color, I am interested in bringing a saturated, full palette into my work to create energy. Outside of late spring, early summer, and autumn trees, my color use stems from the eye’s need to see chromatic balance – my answer to the Pacific Northwest’s desaturated, misty environment. Finally, pattern finds its way into my paintings through my fascination with ornamental European architecture, folk art motifs, lace and decorative stitching.

My work is the embodiment of what I like to imagine, look at and experience, whether it manifests itself in color, shape, or pattern. I aspire to translate these rich and whimsical qualities into my work. 

DECLARACIÓN DEL ARTISTA

Me entusiasman las formas orgánicas y biomórficas que parecen converger, conectarse o flotar en el espacio. En cuanto a la composición, mi trabajo hace hincapié en la forma, el color y el patrón, que pueden crear un movimiento visual lírico. Mi objetivo es atraer al espectador y ayudarle a encontrar el éxtasis, la vitalidad y la belleza. En otras palabras, hacer que el espectador se sienta bien a través de una experiencia visual.

Los colores y las estructuras inherentes a las plantas y los animales, así como los diseños arquitectónicos y del arte popular húngaro, me proporcionan infinitas fuentes de inspiración. En lo que respecta a las plantas, me conmueve profundamente su presencia, especialmente cuando están cerca de una gran reunión.

Las formas elípticas (huevos) son mi refugio visual por sus cualidades simétricas/asimétricas y su conexión implícita con la idea de potencial o renovación. Con el color, me interesa aportar una paleta saturada y completa a mi obra para crear energía. Fuera de los árboles de finales de primavera, principios de verano y otoño, mi uso del color surge de la necesidad del ojo de ver el equilibrio cromático, mi respuesta al entorno desaturado y brumoso del noroeste del Pacífico. Por último, los motivos se incorporan a mis cuadros gracias a mi fascinación por la arquitectura ornamental europea, los motivos del arte popular, los encajes y las costuras decorativas.

Mi obra es la encarnación de lo que me gusta imaginar, mirar y experimentar, ya sea que se manifieste en el color, la forma o el patrón. Aspiro a plasmar estas ricas y caprichosas cualidades en mi obra.
