Lamentablemente, todo viaje tiene un final. Pero antes de despedirme de la Antártida, quisiera compartir un poco más sobre nuestras experiencias. Revisar las fotos y videos para este artículo me trasladó nuevamente a ese lugar mágico del planeta y me sigue pareciendo increíble y de alguna manera surrealista haber estado ahí.

El 21 de enero había planificadas dos actividades, que verás detalladas a continuación. Como te conté en artículos anteriores, la naturaleza es la que está a cargo de las excursiones así que ese día solo nos dejó ir solamente a Pleneau Island. Scenic propone y la naturaleza dispone 😉

Unfortunately, every journey comes to an end. But before I say goodbye to Antarctica, I would like to share a little more about our experiences. Reviewing the picutres and videos for this article transported me back to that magical place on the planet and I still find it incredible and in some ways surreal to have been there.

On January 21 there were two activities planned, which you will see detailed below. As I told you in previous articles, nature is in charge of the excursions, so that day we were only allowed to go to Pleneau Island. Scenic proposes and nature provides 😉

Como podrás ver en las fotos, las condiciones climáticas no fueron las ideales para nuestra excursión. El viento, las lluvias intermitentes y el frío eran evidentes. Llegamos a la isla en los zodiacs y caminamos por ella. Allí encontramos una gran colonia de pingüinos papúa (gentoo penguin) y vimos varias ballenas cruzando el mar muy cerca de la costa.

Digamos que tuvimos un típico día de verano en la Antártida donde la naturaleza es impredecible y cambiante, y aprender a adaptarse es parte de la aventura.

As you can see from the pictures, the weather conditions were not ideal for our excursion. Wind, intermittent rain and cold were obvious. We arrived at the island in the zodiacs and walked around it. There we found a large colony of gentoo penguins and saw several whales crossing the sea very close to the shore.

Let’s just say we had a typical summer day in Antarctica where nature is unpredictable and changeable, and learning to adapt is part of the adventure.

Aunque me sentí un poco decepcionada por la suspensión de la excursión a Berthelot Island, puedo asegurarte que en el crucero no tuve tiempo para aburrirme.

Lo aproveché para tomar un café y charlar con Maricel, una argentina especialista en aves y al mando de uno de los zodiacs. Por otro lado visité el spa del crucero para relajarme y de paso prepararme para el gran desafío de la zambullida al mar metiéndome en una de las piletas de agua helada🥶. También me di una vuelta por el bar, donde Bruno, un divertido barman brasileño, me sorprendió con un cóctel exótico y humeante de su autoría 😋.

Para cerrar el día, celebramos el cumpleaños de Omaya, una mujer con una energía increíble con la que conecté desde nuestra primera conversación. 😌 Algo que no sabía en ese momento, pero que te cuento ahora, es que tuve la suerte de volver a encontrarme con ella dos veces más después de que finalizó el crucero. Estas son las cosas maravillosas que suceden en este tipo de viajes, y por las que también estoy muy agradecida 🤗

Although I was a little disappointed by the cancellation of the Berthelot Island excursion, I can assure you that on the cruise I had no time to be bored.

Itook the opportunity to have a coffee and chat with Maricel, an Argentinean bird specialist who is in charge of one of the zodiacs. On the other hand, I visited the cruise’s spa to relax and prepare myself for the great challenge of the plunge into the sea by getting into one of the pools of icy water🥶. I also went to the bar, where Bruno, a fun Brazilian bartender, surprised me with an exotic and smoky cocktail of his own 😋.

To wrap up the day, we celebrated Omaya’s birthday, a woman with incredible energy that I instantly connected with from our very first conversation. 😌 Something I didn’t know at the time, but I’ll tell you now, is that I was lucky enough to meet her again two more times after the cruise ended. These are the wonderful things that happen on these kinds of trips, and for which I am also very thankful 🤗

Durante la navegación durante la noche cruzamos el Círculo Polar Antártico, un gran acontecimiento y para la mañana teníamos programada la visita a Detaille Island, pero lamentablemente por las condiciones climáticas tuvo que suspenderse 😢

Fue una pena que no pudiéramos hacer la excursión para ver la Base británica W, la cual funcionó como centro de investigaciones científicas entre 1956 y 1959. Para que tengas una idea, te comparto algunas fotos que encontré en Google de lo que hubiéramos visto.

During the navigation during the night we crossed the Antarctic Circle, a great event and for the morning we were scheduled to visit Detaille Island, but unfortunately due to weather conditions it was cancelled 😢.

It was a pity we couldn’t make the excursion to see the British Base W, which operated as a scientific research center between 1956 and 1959. To give you an idea, here are some photos I found on Google of what we would have seen.

Por la tarde, hicimos un recorrido por Lallemand Fjord y tuvimos la suerte de hacerlo con Torben y Christian, una pareja encantadora con la que compartimos mucho tiempo tanto dentro como fuera del crucero. En el zodiac nos acompañaron Larissa, nuestra guía, quien nos contó cosas muy interesantes sobre los témpanos y los diferentes tipos de hielo; Sam, quien manejaba el zodiac; y Martín, el camarógrafo del crucero, quien además era argentino. Realmente nos divertimos muchísimo en ese paseo 😃

In the afternoon, we took a tour of Lallemand Fjord and were fortunate to do so with Torben and Christian, a lovely couple with whom we shared a lot of time both inside and outside the cruise. On the zodiac we were accompanied by Larissa, our guide, who told us very interesting things about the icebergs and the different types of ice; Sam, who drove the zodiac; and Martin, the cruise cameraman, who was also Argentinean. We really had a great time on that ride 😃

Al día siguiente llegamos en un espectacular día soleado a Prospect Point y Fish Islands. Esas serían nuestras dos últimas excursiones por la Antártida ya que esa misma tarde el Scenic pondría rumbo hacia el largo regreso hacia Ushuaia.

The next day we arrived on a spectacular sunny day at Prospect Point and Fish Islands. Those would be our last two Antarctic excursions as that same afternoon the Scenic would set course for the long return to Ushuaia.

Ese día fuimos el primer grupo en llegar a Prospect Point luego de ir abriéndonos paso a través del hielo con el zodiac manejado por Sean. Fue realmente impresionante escuchar cómo crujía el hielo a nuestro paso mientras se abría para luego cerrarse casi como por arte de magia.

Fue una experiencia única ver todo el mar cubierto por diferentes tamaños de hielo, en algunos casos directamente impenetrables, y además poder dimensionar el tamaño de los mismos por debajo de la superficie. Creo además que el sol ayudaba a darle más textura a lo que veíamos y oíamos.

That day we were the first group to arrive at Prospect Point after making our way through the ice with the zodiac driven by Sean. It was really impressive to hear the ice crackle as it opened up and then closed almost as if by magic.

It was a unique experience to see the entire sea covered by different sizes of ice, in some cases directly impenetrable, and also to be able to size the size of them below the surface. I also believe that the sun helped to give more texture to what we saw and heard.

Luego de esa caminata subimos nuevamente al zodiac y salimos para ver pingüinos, esta vez los Adelie mientras nos íbamos acercando a la islas donde estaban las colonias me llamó la atención el fuerte olor a excremento que me sacó del ensueño antártico 😅🤢. Lo extraño es que no había experimentado esa sensación antes siendo que los tuve mucho más cerca, quizás estos muchachos tengan otra dieta 😉

Y algo interesante fue que tuvimos la suerte de ver un pingüino bebé algo no muy común en la época del año en la que estábamos 🐧 Esos detalles hicieron que me olvidara del mal olor y volviera la magia 🙂😉

After that walk we boarded the zodiac again and went out to see penguins, this time the Adelie as we were approaching the islands where the colonies were I was struck by the strong smell of excrement that took me out of the Antarctic dream 😅🤢. The strange thing is that I hadn’t experienced that sensation before when I had them much closer, maybe these guys have another diet 😉

And something interesting was that we were lucky enough to see a baby penguin something not very common at the time of the year we were there 🐧 Those details made me forget about the bad smell and the magic returned 🙂😉

Y así termina este viaje maravilloso y tan lleno de nuevas e inolvidables experiencias. Voy a estar siempre agradecida por haber podido viajar, haber conocido gente increíble entre los pasajeros y toda la tripulación, ellos son los que hacen posible que uno pueda disfrutar todo plenamente 🤗

And so this is the end of this wonderful trip so full of new and unforgettable experiences. I will always be grateful for having been able to travel, to have met amazing people among the passengers and all the crew, they are the ones who make it possible for one to enjoy everything to fully enjoy 🤗.
