El viaje a Río de Janeiro para darle la bienvenida al 2023 fue una decisión que tomamos a último momento. Teníamos otros planes para despedir el año que lamentablemente no pudieron concretarse. Entonces se nos ocurrió la loca idea de cumplir con un sueño que hacía mucho rondaba por nuestras cabezas: despedir y recibir el año en uno de los lugares icónicos en el mundo: Rio ❤️.

Desde temprano en la mañana del 31 de diciembre, pudimos observar las barcazas que se encargarían de iluminar la noche con la llegada del nuevo año, frente a la playa de Copacabana. A medida que avanzaba el día, la ciudad se preparaba para el festejo: se cerró la Avenida Atlántica al tránsito, comenzó a oírse la música de los shows en los escenarios montados en la playa y una multitud de personas se preparaba para el gran evento. Los locales llevaban sillas y bebidas para asegurarse un lugar en la playa y disfrutar del espectáculo que comenzaría a la medianoche.

The trip to Rio de Janeiro to welcome 2023 was a last minute decision. We had other plans to say goodbye to the year that unfortunately could not happen. Then we came up with the wild idea of fulfilling a dream that had been in our heads for a long time: to say goodbye and welcome the year in one of the most iconic places in the world: Rio ❤️.

Early in the morning of December 31, we could see the boats that would light up the night with the arrival of the new year, in front of Copacabana beach. As the day progressed, the city was getting ready for the celebration: the Avenida Atlantica was closed to traffic, the music of the shows on the stages set up on the beach could be heard and a crowd of people was getting ready for the big event. Locals brought chairs and drinks to secure a place on the beach to enjoy the show that would start at midnight.

Algo a tener en cuenta si decidis ir a festejar Réveillon a Rio es que al ser un destino turístico tan popular, vas a encontrarte con muchísima gente, que como vos, eligió este lugar para recibir el nuevo año. Y al ser temporada alta, los precios de estadías y cenas serán más del doble de lo que pagarías en ocasiones normales. De cualquier forma vale la pena hacerlo una vez en la vida. Ahora me queda pendiente volver a Rio en Carnaval a bailar en una escola do samba 😉

Something to keep in mind if you decide to go to Rio to celebrate Réveillon is that being such a popular tourist destination, you will find a lot of people, who like you, chose this place to welcome the new year. And since it is high season, the prices for stays and dinners will be more than double what you would pay on normal dates. Anyway, it is worth doing it once in a lifetime. Now I have to go back to Rio in Carnival to dance in a «escola do samba» 😉

La buena onda de la gente es otra característica, sonríen mucho cuando entras a un negocio o cuando vas a un bar o un restaurant. Pero no solamente quienes trabajan en el lugar sino también las personas que están sentadas cerca tuyo quienes te hablan como si te conocieran de toda la vida. De esa forma conocimos a Bruna y Rafael (quienes nos recomendaron muy buenos restaurantes en Ipanema y Leblon) a Rejana, a Tukinha , a Márcia y otros que no recuerdo sus nombres.

Lamentablemente también hay un lado B. Como en toda gran ciudad hay gente que está buscando la oportunidad para sacarte algo. Mi consejo es que vayas con poco por la calle, acordate que vas a estar semi desnudo así que no hay lugar donde guardar las cosas 😉 y que no uses tu tarjeta de crédito con vendedores ambulantes o en taxis de dudosa procedencia. Prestando atención a estas pequeñas cosas lo vas a pasar muy bien.

The good vibes of the people is another characteristic, they smile a lot when you enter a store or when you go to a bar or a restaurant. But not only those who work in the place but also the people sitting near you who talk to you as if they have known you all your life. That’s how we met Bruna and Rafael (who recommended spectacular restaurants in Ipanema and Leblon), Rejana, Tukinha, Márcia and others that I don’t remember their names.

Unfortunately there is also a B-side. As in every big city there are people who are looking for the opportunity to take something from you. My tip is to go with few money on the street, remember that you will be semi naked so there is no place to keep things 😉 and don’t use your credit card with street vendors or in cabs of doubtful origin. By paying attention to these little things you will have a great time.

Este fue el primer viaje de Barnaby a Rio, así que fue obligatorio ir a visitar los lugares turísticos, como por ejemplo el Pan de Azúcar. Me dí cuenta que es un lugar que me gusta tanto que cada vez que fui (esta fue la quinta) volví a subirme al bondinho para ver las vistas alucinantes de la ciudad. Siempre hay algo que vuelve a sorprenderme 😍

Una buena forma de no estar horas en la fila es comprar tickets de acceso prioritario y llevar un sombrero, protector solar y si sos muy precavido un paraguas porque un chaparrón puede sorprenderte en cualquier momento 😉

This was Barnaby’s first trip to Rio, so it was mandatory to visit the sights, such as the Sugarloaf. I realized that it’s a place I love so much that every time I went (this was the fifth) I went back up the bondinho to see the amazing views of the city. There is always something that surprises me again 😍.

A good way to avoid standing in line for hours is to buy priority access tickets and carry a hat, sunscreen and, if you are very cautious, an umbrella because a shower can surprise you at any time 😉

Otro lugar imprescindible en Río de Janeiro es el Cristo Redentor, ubicado en el Corcovado. Un lugar también muy concurrido pero aquí no hay accesos prioritarios así que mi recomendación es que intentes ir lo más cerca posible de la hora de cierre, ya que suele haber mucha menos gente.

Un detalle importantísimo es que elijas un día con pocas nubes para poder disfrutar no sólo de las vistas de toda la ciudad sino también para poder ver al Cristo porque a pesar de sus 38 metros de altura, esta estatua puede volverse invisible en un día nublado.

Another essential place in Rio de Janeiro is the Christ the Redeemer, located on the Corcovado. A place also very crowded but here there is no priority access so my recommendation is that you try to go as close as possible to closing time, as it is usually much less crowded.

A very important note is to choose a day with few clouds to enjoy not only the views of the entire city but also to be able to see the Christ because despite its 38 meters high, this statue can become invisible on a cloudy day.

Si visitas Río, un lugar que no te podes perder es la Escadaria de Santa Teresa, también conocida como la Escalera Selarón en homenaje al artista chileno Jorge Selarón, quien comenzó a renovar la misma en la década de los 90 utilizando azulejos como decoración. El proyecto tomó tal impulso que turistas que visitaban Río comenzaron a llevarle azulejos de diferentes partes del mundo. El resultado es que la escalera que comunica el barrio de Lapa con el de Santa Teresa se convirtió en un lugar bellísimo, colorido y de mucha movida cultural y gastronómica.

Otra cosa que siempre me llama la atención son los murales y encontré unos cuantos tanto antes de subir como al final de la escalera.

If you visit Rio, one place you can’t miss is the Escadaria de Santa Teresa, also known as the Selarón Staircase in homage to the Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, who began to renovate it in the 90’s using tiles as decoration. The project gained such momentum that tourists visiting Rio began to bring tiles from different parts of the world. The result is that the stairway that connects the neighborhood of Lapa with Santa Teresa became a beautiful, colorful place with a lot of cultural and gastronomic activity.

Another thing that always catches my eye are the murals and I found a few both before going up and at the top of the stairs.

Después de subir la Escalera Selarón, continuamos caminando por el barrio hasta llegar al restaurante Aprazivel. Este lugar, con su comida de autor, excelentes caipirinhas, buena música y una ubicación elevada, nos ofreció una vista bellísima de la ciudad mientras caía la noche. Fue maravilloso ver las luces de Río desde esa perspectiva privilegiada.

After climbing the Selarón staircase, we continued walking through the neighborhood until we reached the Aprazivel restaurant. This place, with its signature food, excellent caipirinhas, good music and elevated location, offered us a beautiful view of the city sunset. It was wonderful to see the lights of Rio from this privileged perspective.

Teníamos mucha expectativa con la visita al Museo del Mañana (Museu do Amanhã https://museudoamanha.org.br/) dedicado a la ciencia y ubicado en la zona portuaria de Río y por el momento no de las más bonitas. El edificio es imponente con la impronta propia del arquitecto Santiago Calatrava creador de los edificios icónicos en Valencia, el Puente de la Mujer en Buenos Aires o The Oculus en Nueva York por nombrarte algunas de sus obras https://calatrava.com/. Sin embargo nos quedamos un poco desilusionados con las muestras, quizás por estar en el comienzo de año estaban en una especie de transición, ojalá que así sea.

We had great expectations with the visit to the Museum of Tomorrow (Museu do Amanhã https://museudoamanha.org.br/ ) dedicated to science and located in the port area of Rio and for the moment not one of the most beautiful. The building is stunning with the own imprint of the architect Santiago Calatrava https://calatrava.com/ creator of the iconic buildings in Valencia, the Women’s Bridge in Buenos Aires or The Oculus in New York to name a few of his works However, we were a little disappointed with the exhibitions, perhaps because it was the beginning of the year, they were in a kind of transition, I hope so.

Y termino este artículo volviendo al cierre del 2022 y dándole la bienvenida al 2023, vestidos de blanco, festejando un nuevo año juntos con Barnaby ❤️, compartiendo cena con gente que conocimos esa noche como Ronaldo que con su buena vibra quedará siempre en mi corazón, admirando los fuegos artificiales, bailando, mojándome los pies en el mar, celebrando la vida, agradecida por haber viajado a una ciudad que amo y agradecida por tu interés al leerme 🤗
