I met Tamara Dinius @artbytamaradinius in August 2022, at one of the summer fairs organized in Camas. Her stand was colorful and inviting so there were several people chatting with her, a woman with a very good vibe, who positively impacted me. So I waited my turn to talk to her and I knew in the first exchange of words and smiles that I wanted to invite her to be part of Artistic Friends 😉

Conocí a Tamara Dinius @artbytamaradinius en agosto del 2022, en una de las ferias de verano que se organizan en Camas. Su stand era colorido e invitante así que había varias personas conversando con ella, una mujer con muy buena vibra, que me impactó positivamente. Así que esperé mi turno para hablar con ella y supe en el primer intercambio de palabras y sonrisas que quería invitarla a que fuera parte de Amigas y Amigos Artistas 😉

However, as often happens, the times are different for each one of us and it was only in April of this year that we were able to meet again.

I decided to enroll in a face painting workshop at Tamara’s studio, an inspiring space surrounded by mountains and forests. It seemed like a good opportunity to get to know the artist’s environment and also to experiment with my own creativity. The experience was very fulfilling because Tamara is very enthusiastic and invites exploration with different techniques and to play during the artistic process

Sin embargo, como muchas veces ocurre, los tiempos son diferentes para cada una y fue recién en abril de este año que pudimos reencontrarnos.

Decidí inscribirme en un taller de pintura de rostros en el estudio de Tamara, un espacio inspirador rodeado de montañas y bosques. Me pareció una buena oportunidad conocer el entorno de la artista y además experimentar con mi propia creatividad. La experiencia fue muy gratificante porque Tamara es muy entusiasta e invita a la exploración con diferentes técnicas y al juego durante el proceso artístico.

During the workshop I had the opportunity to meet part of the group of artists that make up the Adret’ Artist Collective. Angela Swansson, Deborah Nagano, Liz Nye, Ellen Nordgren, Regina Westmoreland and Tamara Dinius decided to share a common space where they each work with different artistic techniques and also exhibit their work. The next exhibition will be for Mother’s Day Weekend on May 13 and 14.

It is admirable the energy of these women who met last year and decided to put together this group that goes beyond the artistic. Listening to them talk made me feel that we can always find new alternatives in our lives and that art is one of the paths.

Durante el taller tuve oportunidad de conocer a parte del grupo de artistas que conforman el Adret’ Artist Collective. Angela Swansson, Deborah Nagano, Liz Nye, Ellen Nordgren, Regina Westmoreland y Tamara Dinius decidieron compartir un espacio común donde trabajar cada una con diferentes técnicas artísticas y además exhibir sus trabajos. La próxima exhibición será para el Mother´s Day Weekend el 13 y 14 de mayo.

Me pareció admirable la energía de estas mujeres que se conocieron el año pasado y decidieron armar este grupo que va más allá de lo artístico. Escuchándolas hablar me hicieron sentir que siempre podemos encontrar nuevas alternativas en nuestras vidas y que el arte es uno de los caminos.

Ahora es el momento de dejarte con las palabras de Tamara para que te cuente sobre su recorrido artístico y conozcas un poco más de su historia. Estoy segura que vas a disfrutarla.

My name is Tamara Dinius, and I am a self proclaimed “Passionista”. I am inspired by the world around me, and my passion for creating art is the reason I started Women, Wine, and Words.

After being away from a creative life for 15 years, I started painting again in 2014. My first attempts at designing and painting are a far cry from what I am now doing. Although my first pieces of artwork were less than impressive, they did sell. The confidence I got from selling my first few pieces started a fire in me. I kept painting and started adding my own quotes to the artwork. The
merging of my art and my words was successful. I sell my artwork at 20 juried art events each year and I also teach art classes, wholesale my greeting cards and magnets, and do business consulting.

Me llamo Tamara Dinius y me autoproclamo «Pasionista». Encuentro inspiración en el mundo que me rodea y mi pasión por crear arte es la razón por la que fundé Women, Wine, and Words.

Luego de estar alejada de la vida creativa durante 15 años, empecé a pintar de nuevo en 2014. Mis primeros intentos en diseño y pintura distan mucho de lo que hago ahora. Aunque mis primeras obras no fueron espectaculares, se vendieron. La confianza que me dio vender mis primeras obras encendió un fuego en mí. Seguí pintando y empecé a añadir mis propias citas a las obras. La fusión de arte con mis palabras fue un éxito. Vendo mis obras en 20 eventos artísticos con jurado cada año y también doy clases de arte, vendo al por mayor mis tarjetas de felicitación e imanes y además hago consultoría empresarial.

As with any new venture, there are obstacles. Mine were no different than most, but they were very real to me. I was frightened of failing, of succeeding and not having enough product, not being
relevant, of trying too hard and not trying hard enough. I second guessed myself at every turn. I lacked the necessary skills for creating a Youtube video, opening an Instagram account, Facebook
business page, Pinterest account, Etsy shop, and other social media platforms. I had never created a website from the ground up before and was clueless on how to register my own domain. But I
learned! I asked questions, I listened to podcasts, and I reached out to others for assistance.

Como en cualquier nueva empresa, hay obstáculos. Los míos no eran distintos a los de la mayoría, en mi caso eran muy concretos. Me asustaba fracasar, tener éxito y no tener suficientes productos, no ser relevante, esforzarme demasiado y a la vez no esforzarme lo suficiente. Me cuestionaba a cada paso. Carecía de los conocimientos necesarios para crear un video en Youtube, abrir una cuenta en Instagram, una página de empresa en Facebook o una cuenta de Pinterest, tienda de Etsy y otras plataformas de redes sociales. Nunca había creado un sitio web desde cero y no tenía ni idea de cómo registrar mi propio dominio. Pero aprendí.
Hice preguntas, escuché podcasts y pedí ayuda a otras personas.

For so many women, asking for help can be hard. I was reluctant to admit I didn’t have the technological knowledge to move forward with my business. It was humbling to ask my daughters for help, but I did, and I empowered them in doing so. My youngest daughter has a degree in marketing and agreed to help me set up my website. During this process, she started her own business and had her entire website completed before I finished mine. My oldest daughter’s insight led me to change my business name from Country Crafters USA (honestly, what was I thinking?) to
something much more relatable, Women, Wine, and Words. Her editing skills were invaluable when adding content to my website. She has a PHD and is very data driven. She has been the driving force behind helping me to create a better inventory tracking system.

Para muchas mujeres, pedir ayuda puede ser difícil. Yo era reacia a admitir que no tenía los conocimientos tecnológicos necesarios para sacar adelante mi negocio. Con humildad les pedí ayuda a mis hijas y sentí que de alguna forma las empoderé al hacerlo. Mi hija menor es licenciada en marketing y aceptó ayudarme a crear mi sitio web. Durante este proceso, puso en marcha su propio negocio y terminó toda su página web antes de que yo terminara la mía. La intuición de mi hija mayor me llevó a cambiar el nombre de mi negocio de Country Crafters USA (sinceramente, ¿en qué estaba pensando?) a algo mucho más afín Women, Wine and Words. Sus habilidades de edición fueron inestimables a la hora de añadir contenido a mi página web. Ella tiene un doctorado y se guía mucho por los datos. Ella ha sido la fuerza impulsora que me ayudó a crear un mejor sistema de control de inventario.

About the materials or tools that I use, it’s hard to pick just one, so I won’t 🙂 . I will share with you my top five. I really like the results I get from liquid watercolors. They will reactivate with water once they are dry so you can create some dramatic results. Unlike watercolors, Inktense products will not reactivate once they are put down on your surface. I like Inktense blocks and pencils, although I tend to reach for my blocks more often than the pencils. Neocolor crayons are fun and easy to use. They are color crayons for adults. Golden Fluid Acrylics are expensive, but worth the cost. I have been buying them slowly as the cost can be overwhelming. The rich colors are intense and they go a long way. Acrylic Inks are amazing! I love to paint with them, use them to add drips and splatters, and use them to layer my work.

En cuanto a los materiales o herramientas que utilizo, es difícil elegir sólo uno, así que no lo haré 🙂 . Les comparto mis cinco favoritos. Me gustan mucho los resultados que obtengo con las acuarelas líquidas. Se reactivan con el agua una vez secas, por lo que pueden crearse resultados espectaculares. A diferencia de las acuarelas, los productos con tintas no se reactivan una vez colocados sobre la superficie. Me gustan los rotuladores y los lápices Inktense, aunque suelo echar mano de los bloques más a menudo que de los lápices. Los lápices de colores Neocolor son divertidos y fáciles de usar. Son ceras de colores para adultos. Los acrílicos Golden Fluid son caros, pero merecen la pena. Los he ido comprando poco a poco, ya que su precio puede resultar abrumador. Los colores son intensos y duran mucho. Las tintas acrílicas son increíbles. Me encanta pintar con ellas, utilizarlas para añadir goteos y salpicaduras, y utilizarlas para crear capas en mis obras.

There are actually two people whom I admire, my daughters. They have inspired me to take a chance on myself. They remind me daily that I matter, that what I have to share matters, and that I have a voice that deserves to be heard. I grew up in a male dominated family (loving and caring, but still male dominated), where women were featured in the supporting role. It has taken me half a lifetime to understand that a relationship should be 50/50 and that my voice should be heard as loudly as that of my male counterpart. My daughters have figured this out for themselves and they encourage me to continue to find my voice. I am so thankful for their love, support, and continued encouragement.

En realidad hay dos personas a las que admiro, mis hijas. Ellas me han animado a jugármela. Me recuerdan a diario que importo, que lo que tengo para compartir importa y que tengo una voz que merece ser escuchada. Crecí en una familia dominada por los hombres (cariñosa y atenta, pero aún así dominada por los hombres), en la que las mujeres aparecían en un papel secundario. He tardado media vida en entender que una relación debe ser 50/50 y que mi voz debe oírse tan alto como la de mi compañero masculino. Mis hijas lo han comprendido por sí mismas y me animan a seguir encontrando mi voz. Estoy muy agradecida por su amor, su apoyo y sus continuos ánimos.

You are worthy of great success. You have value to add to the world and everything you desire is waiting on the other side of fear. You can’t get to where you want to be unless you take your first
