Love is in the air.

For the past few years every time I experience a situation that fills me with emotion I stop for a few seconds to think about the facts or circumstances that had to happen for the magic to happen and on this occasion to allow me to enjoy a coffee and a chat with Mariela Ivanier https://www.instagram.com/marielaivanier/ at Colección Rivarola a few days ago.

I would have liked to have been more original with different questions, but I realized I wasn’t and ended up sticking to clichés.

Art is her refuge, her oasis. I ask her how she chose the works of the artists that adorn her walls, shelves or glass cases and she answers me that something had to toch her, something in that artwork had to move her.

I empathized with those words. I thought that something similar happens to me when I choose the places, and especially the people, I want to write about or relate to, I need to be passionate, I need something to touch my heart and expand it. I feel we have something in common.

She told me about another collection she left behind in her previous home, the one she shared with Mora, her daughter, and which is now left for her. I didn’t ask her if it was easy for her to leave some of the artwork behind, but after hearing the loving tone while talking to Mora on the phone, I thought that question would have been unnecessary. Love is in the air.

Something changed when we sat down at the table where she took some work notes. We talked about her last book El arte está en casa (Art is at home) wrote during the pandemic, where she interviewed 141 women, a pharaonic project, the contract said it had to be only 30. This story describes the passion with which Mariela works. I ask her if she gets bored easily, she answers me very much 🙂

She tells me that exceptionally she accompanies artists as in the case of Débora Staiff https://www.instagram.com/debystaiff/ who presented De Crisálida y vuelos de mariposas an exhibition related to the artist’s breast cancer diagnosis, the 16 chemotherapy sessions she received and how she was able to transform everything that happened into art. I dare not say a word for fear of breaking down, I will do it later in a WhatsApp message.

We exchanged gifts in a gesture that was spontaneous, loving and unexpected. We looked at a little picture where there are two pandas and we laughed remembering an story I read in some article, we took a selfie, we gave each other a hug, I felt very happy and grateful to have fulfilled a dream, it would have been corny to tell her, maybe it will be more corny when Mariela reads it 🧡

I thank Mariela Ivanier for her time and confidence; also Rodolfo Seide and Vero Martínez Castro for putting her in my path.
