My name is James DeBoer and I live in Washougal, WA, but am originally from Western Michigan.

I started out in art at age four, when I received my first box of crayons. My mother strongly encouraged me; in fact, in the Dutch-American society I grew up in anyone with an interest in art was strongly encouraged. We Dutch may not have many famous generals, composers, or authors, but artists? Plenty!

When I want to work in color, I use pastels, because of their vibrancy, and I make copper plate etchings when I wish to work in line. I learned pastels on my own. My parents gave me a set for Christmas, when I was twelve.

The etching process I learned about a dozen years ago through the summer program of the Art Institute of Chicago. As a member of the Atelier Meridian, in Portland, OR, I have shared access to the materials and presses for making these etchings.

Comencé en el arte a los cuatro años, cuando recibí mi primera caja de crayones. Mi madre me animó mucho; de hecho, en la sociedad Holando- Americana que crecí se animaba fuertemente a cualquier persona que tuviera algún interés artístico. Es posible que los holandeses no tengamos muchos generales, compositores o autores famosos, ¿pero artistas? ¡Muchísimos!

Cuando quiero trabajar en color, uso pasteles, por su vitalidad, y además hago grabados en plancha de cobre cuando quiero trabajar en línea. Aprendí pasteles por mi cuenta. Mis padres me regalaron un juego cuando tenía doce años en Navidad. El proceso de grabado lo aprendí hace unos doce años en cursos de verano del Art Institute of Chicago. Y como miembro del Atelier Meridian, en Portland, Oregon, tuve acceso a los materiales y las prensas para hacer grabados.

I have had works displayed in juried shows from Manhattan to Los Angeles, had a pair of them published in the International Drawing Annual, and last year, had one published in Pastel Journal’s 100 best of the year. But the most interesting for me was to participate in the collaborative book project “Invisible Cities”, where each of 238 artists from around the world were invited to contribute an original print. The book, put together in accordion fashion, unfolded to 80 ft. (24 meters) long. It went on display in Venice, Italy, among other places.

My favorite artist has always been the American, Edward Hopper, whose paintings always contain a hint of the alienation that pervades life, and that we must always struggle to overcome. Whenever in Chicago, I go to the Art Institute and stand in awe before his painting “Nighthawks”.

He tenido la oportunidad de exponer mis obras frente a un jurado desde Manhattan hasta Los Ángeles. Además un par de ellas fueron publicadas en el International Drawing Annual, y el año pasado, se publicó una en Pastel Journal’s 100 best of the year. Pero lo más interesante para mí fue participar en el proyecto de libro colaborativo “Ciudades invisibles”, donde 238 artistas de todo el mundo fueron invitados a participar con una impresión original. El libro, ensamblado en forma de acordeón, se desplegó a 24 metros de largo y se exhibió en Venecia, Italia, entre otros lugares.

Mi artista favorito siempre ha sido el estadounidense Edward Hopper, cuyas pinturas siempre contienen un indicio de la alienación que impregna la vida y que siempre debemos luchar por superar. Siempre que estoy en Chicago, voy al Art Institute y me quedo asombrado ante su pintura “Nighthawks”.
