Una de las zonas bien porteñas de Buenos Aires está en la Avenida Corrientes desde Callao hasta 9 de Julio. Caminando por el lugar pareciera que el tiempo no hubiese pasado, que se hubiera detenido y si hubo algún movimiento fue tan lento que se hace difícil percibirlo 🙂

A fines de diciembre fui a almorzar con Puche (Guillermo) uno de mis grandes amigos de la escuela secundaria, quien propuso para el encuentro uno de esos restaurantes tradicionales: Chiquilín. Ese fue el motivo del recorrido por la zona que hoy te presento. Y al estar en el modo atento, te cuento cuáles fueron las cosas que me parecieron curiosas o que volví a mirar con otros ojos.

One of the most porteño areas of Buenos Aires is on Corrientes Avenue from Callao to 9 de Julio. Walking through the place it seems that time has not passed, that it has stopped and if there was any movement it was so slow that it is difficult to perceive it 🙂

At the end of December I went to lunch with Puche (Guillermo), one of my great friends from high school, who suggested one of those traditional restaurants: Chiquilín. That was the reason for the tour of the area that I present to you today. And being in the attentive mode, I will tell you what were the things that I found curious or that I looked at again with new eyes.

Me había olvidado por completo que en los alrededores se concentran las pizzerías tradicionales porteñas, con su pizza de molde con una masa gruesa, bastante grasosa y cocinada en horno a leña; una bomba al comerte una porción, pero es algo obligatorio si venis a Buenos Aires y la que si o si tenes que probar es la fugazzetta. Pizzerías como Güerrín, Los Inmortales, Banchero, Kentucky y fuera de la calle Corrientes El cuartito son una parada obligada y si sos guapo (valiente) y acompañas la bomba con fernet y coca cola ya jugas en ligas mayores 🙂

I had completely forgotten that in the surroundings are concentrated the traditional porteño pizzerias, with its mold pizza with a thick dough, quite greasy and cooked in a wood oven; a bomb to your stomach when you eat a slice, but it is a must if you come to Buenos Aires. Fugazzetta is the one that you need to try. Pizzerias like Güerrín, Los Inmortales, Banchero, Kentucky and outside Corrientes street El cuartito are a must stop and if you are brave and accompany the bomb with fernet and coke you are playing in the big leagues 🙂

Si estás en plan de comer una ensalada liviana porque es verano o estás a dieta te recomiendo que busques otra zona para hacerlo. Acá van otros clásicos de comida no apta para sanos: Pippo y El Palacio de la Papa Frita ¡¡qué buen nombre!!. Y si queres un café pasá por La Giralda, eso si no esperes hojitas dibujadas con la espuma o cosas por el estilo, es bien vieja escuela 😉

If you are planning to eat a light salad because it is summer or you are on a diet I recommend you to look for another area to do it. Here are some other classics of food not suitable for healthy people: Pippo and El Palacio de la Papa Frita (what a good name, the Palace of the French Fried! )And if you want a coffee, stop by La Giralda, but don’t expect little leaves drawn with the foam or anything like that, they are old school in the way to serve coffee 😉

Otra de las cosas que encontrás por la zona son las librerías con libros y revistas usadas. Son lugares para venir a revolver ya que podrías encontrar algo único o que no está en ningún otro lado .Y también, como en el caso de Losada, obras de arte en sus paredes.

Another thing you will find in the area are bookstores with used books and magazines. They are places to come and rummage around as you might find something unique or that is not found anywhere else, and also, as in the case of Losada, works of art on their walls.

Dos lugares también muy típicos son El Teatro General San Martin y Gato Negro si sos fan de las especies y de tomar té . Ahora tienen unas mesitas afuera asi que es un lugar para visitar y hacer una pausa.

Two other typical places are El Teatro General San Martin and Gato Negro if you are a fan of spices and tea. Now they have a few tables outside so it is a place to visit and take a break.

Hace unos 30 años trabajé muy cerca de esa zona y uno de mis refugios en la hora del almuerzo era Zivals un lugar que en ese momento vendían CDs (que lo creas o no eran la novedad del momento 🙂 ), vinilos y casettes, todo giraba alrededor de la música. Me alegró ver que esa esquina clásica de Corrientes y Callao sigue en pie a pesar de todo y con agregado de libros y películas. Bello lugar, quizás estuve equivocada al decir que los lugares no habían cambiado… Zivals necesitó transformarse durante todos estos años para seguir con vida 🙂 . Nos seguimos viendo por las calles de Buenos Aires.

About 30 years ago I worked very close to that area and one of my lunchtime havens was Zivals, a place that at that time sold CDs (which believe it or not were the novelty of the moment 🙂 ), vinyls and cassettes, everything revolved around music. I was happy to see that this classic corner of Corrientes and Callao is still standing in spite of everything and with an addition of books and movies. Beautiful place, maybe I was wrong when I said that places had not changed…. Zivals needed to transform itself during all these years to stay alive 🙂 . We keep seeing each other in the streets of Buenos Aires.
